    E&TB had a four-album run of almost unparalleled excellence: Crocodiles. Heaven Up Here. Porcupine. Ocean Rain.

    Love it. I bought the box set, Crystal Days, when I was about 16 or 17, with money from cutting lawns. I fell in love with so many E&tBM songs that are NOT on streaming sites, this being perhaps my favorite. This should have been an album track on Porcupine!

    This is from a vinyl record I have. My brother and I collected anything we could find in the record stores by Echo and the Bunnymen during the 80's. All the Echo songs posted on this channel are from both our collections, which I've been able to digitize from connecting the record playing through to the computer, and using a program.

      That's hi tech! I recorded from vinyl to cassette not long after it was released on 12'' in Australia. I wore the cassette out in a car stereo for a decade or so. Then, about 12 years ago, I recorded from a cassette player to my computer. They put 'noise' in, and I added more.

    This song was revealed to me on a cassette compilation [that I purchased at either a Disc Jockey (more likely) or Camelot record store] called _Revenge_of_the_Killer_B's_. Formative find for me!

    This was included on the "Crystal Days" boxed set in 2001. There are enough b-sides and rarities to make that a worthwhile purchase, even if the later music and live disk is crap.

      Those first 2 discs alone make that box set worth owning. I got that as a teen before I went on to buy the studio albums. Unfortunately, idk where it is now, or if I even still have the discs, and this track and a few other great ones from Crystal Days aren’t on streaming… RUclips is my only access to this track now. Should have been on Porcupine! ✌️

      This is what "Porcupine" would have sounded like if the label hadn't turned down the original album masters. Consider the "alternate versions" found on the CD remaster of that album, alongside "A Drop In The Ocean" as "The Cutter" was originally named. We can almost reconstitute the original version of that lost album.

      They arguably managed to do psychedelic post punk better than any other band on Porcupine. This track didn’t make the album, but it still showcases that mindf*ck style from the era.
      (If not the best application of psychedelia to post punk, then certainly top three albums that did so. Off the top of my head, I can think of several other great instances, but none that best or match Porcupine, save maybe for Heaven Up Here, which is my favorite from them by just a hair over Porcupine… it’s just not as heavy on the psychedelics.)

    • @nikolademitri731
      @nikolademitri731 2 года назад +2

      @@RobinParmar that track takes me back to laying in my room in the dark with my headphones on, a teenager being transported to other worlds, darker and more interesting…. I think it’s hands down their darkest material, though it’s also amongst their absolute best. Dark and beautiful. For me, this band’s material is basically untouchable from the Heaven Up Here and Porcupine era, 81-83… dark, psychedelic, post punk genius! (Though I also love Crocodiles and Ocean Rain, just not quite as much.)

      If you can find the box set, Crystal Days, this is on disc 2. That’s how I came to know it. I was born in ‘87, but got into them as a teen, and got that box set before I even bought any studio albums. It’s worth it if you love the band, and want access to alt versions, b-sides, singles, and such that aren’t on the albums, some aren’t even on the bonus versions of the studio albums.. ✌️

    I would love to hear Ian Mac and Will S et al go back to making the type of music one hears on Crocodiles and, especially, Heaven Up Here. I loved those albums, still do but could not get into anything they did after. It all became a bit...turgid.

    • @ninetyminutestd
      @ninetyminutestd 6 лет назад +6

      Ian can write good tunes, he's just so wrong about production and arrangements. Candleland, for example, sounded thin and dated the day it was released. Which is a pity as there are decent tunes there. Same with What are you going..where Ian's doing Phil Collins or Michael Bolton. Why??? I know he thinks himself a crooner but that's no excuse to be boring and turgid. I have little to base this on, but I believe McCulloch was the main songwriter for E&TB, I think there's enough evidence the guy can write a tune. And we all know he wrote all the lyrics. But the other 3 Bunnymen elevated the tunes to greatness with their own additions and they put in the hard work of production and arrangement. Because left to his devices McCulloch would have produced 80's Genesis records.
      He wrote and self-produced a terrific b-side called Toad which carried on the rich tradition of Bunnymen great b-sides. It's off-kilter and gloriously left field. So he has it in him--I don't know why he's fought and killed this creative trait for so many years.
