I recorded this on HBO in the 80’s and watched this on VHS Cassette countless times. I might be the only person on earth that has memorized the entire opening song. I Spent so many sick days as a kid at home watching this to make me feel better.

Thank God I grew up watching this type of humor as a kid. It was fun and funny. The Guest , Short restaurant scene was probably completely improv. Portlandia is very similar

When they come back to them, and Guest says "look… Willie Shoemaker," I'm convinced that laugh they both let loose is legitimate.

I saw him in public a couple years ago (won't say where, don't want to get in any more trouble). He was waiting outside a carwash, smoking a cigarette, and he had these two huge bodyguards with him. Well, I made the mistake of walking up to ask for an autograph.
Marty dropped his cigarette, crushed it with his heel and then lit another one. He finally turned to look at me and mumbled, "What do you say boys? Let's give him an autograph."
His bodyguards pinned me to the wall and Martin Short spent the next thirty minutes signing his name on my chest with his cigarette. The worst was at the end, when he announced he forgot to dot the "eye".
For a long time afterward I was confused and angry, but now I think I understand:
In Hollywood there are stars, and then there are men like Marty Short.

I've been quoting this special for the last 35 years or whatever it's been. Lol. And yet it took til March of 2024 for me to check to see if it was on RUclips. I actually have 2 framed 8x10s of myself in my man cave. One where I'm deep in thought and the other I'm holding a tennis racket. Lol. I've yet to show them to anyone( in Lawrence Orbach voice of course) that got the reference! But somehow that makes it even funnier to me. That and singing "idea! Jackie's got an idea!". Lol I just giggle like I'm 12 again.

@@csf7773 So, I just went down a rabbit hole, and I believe the dog's name is "Der Bingle." This was a nickname given to Bing Crosby by his German audience during WWII, and it eventually caught on in the US as well. But because of Lawrence Orbach's weird pronunciation, I wasn't 100% sure, until I discovered that Martin Short used this reference again in "The Completely Mental Misadventures of Ed Grimley" in 1988. One episode featured a character named Derwood Bingle (a "notorious robber who keeps going free because the judges like the sound of his voice") who was an obvious caricature of Bing Crosby. I don't quite get the joke, but I guess Marty just thought the name sounded funny?

Soon after this, Short and many other comedians went to Showtime, as HBO started to focus less on comedy and more on movies.

One thing I learned from this special--a little Martin goes a long way and it can be too much if he doesn't have anybody to bounce off of. (Can you imagine Jiminy Glick with no celebrity to interact with?)The first few minutes of this special were not particularly funny when Short was pretty much the only one onscreen.. However, I felt a wave of relief when Tracey ullman popped up, then Christopher Guest then several others (lots of SCTV alums). I liked the fact it wasn't recorded live but closer to SCTV style, only this time with no laugh track.

Not nearly as good as the first Martin Short special he did about four years earlier than this. ‘85 I think. That one was hilarious and original all the way through. This didn’t have the same mojo, unfortunately.
