    Social interactions peaked in WoW in 2004s Barrens Chat

      It's going on in SoD now. Just like the old days and fun as hell. Makes retail feel like the surface of mars.

    I had a fun group do TW Skyreach this week I feel like I broke the ice by starting off the dungeon with "birds.
    Birds.
    Birds." As 3 separate messages

    My $0.02
    In the peak of WoW, I played every class.
    I could be DONE for the week on my main, then play on an alt, and repeat.
    This means when a guildie came on voice and said, "I still need my 5 heroics" or whatever, I could drop what I was doing and go on an alt that still needed that, or get on my main or whatever. I was doing what I WANTED to do, not what I NEEDED to do.
    I think the focus on designing SO MUCH to do and it all progresses player power in some way means everyone has their checklist of "need to finish" things which sends everyone in different directions, so even when you have guildies online, most of you are working on completely different things. This means even 5 man content is run in finder more often than in guild.
    At least, this is what I've experienced ever since MoP when we had so many faction reps, tokens, etc to farm and it's only gotten worse since.

      But DF have had none of those issues, i agree with your point from legion to SL but in DF that doesnt hold up at all. You can easily play alts gearing take max 1 week if you do a few hours a day and ofc have the skill set to push higher end content

      Not in my experience. Between crafting consuming so much more time, the gold sink is heavier than ever, so I'm constantly needing to do things just for gold, augment rune farming (I stopped just before season 2 ended so no permanent augment), pushing 10 M+ or more (most are wrong key, leavers, someone bad in the group, etc), reputations....
      No, I've still needed to be on my main for the majority of my time or I'm losing out on something.
      Yes, DF has been BETTER than in a long time, but we're still putting a LOT of our time into our mains.

    I miss the days of guild chat so much. Granted, my guild is mostly dead as there are so few of us left. However, I just hate the idea that I feel I have to join yet another discord channel nowadays. I REALLY dislike using Discord. It's just a chaotic mess and I don't want to have to keep tabbing between windows. I appreciate the ability to have voice channels but there's just too much *stuff* going on nowadays and there is no real "set" standard for casual chat among friends and guildies if you don't want to physically chat with your voice.
    Exploring other servers to try to find a 'home away from home', it's always Discord this, Discord that, DISCORD DISCORD DISCORD and they all feel so impersonal and it makes me feel like there's no place for a smaller focus on building a rapport with fellow players. It's literally all or nothing.

      They were special times, and while now we are so connected with communities and such outside the game , like you say it's a bit overwhelming at times. Guild Chat always felt like a cosy place.

      what are you even talking about discord being chaotic o.O
      back then everyone used Team speak THAT IS A MESS and in moste guilds that were going for progress voice were mandatory as well.
      dungeons and stuff even sometimes people wantedt you to join a voice chat ..now days its only when you are raiding with a group
      Discord is way better simple and easy to acces....

    Good topic. I had a ventrilo account back in the day. I played since vanilla with some gaps. My issue was with normal interactions and your gender attracted unwelcome behaviors. I do miss the conversations and I still have friends from WOW on facebook but they rarely play now. My husband plays too but he play still is different. I really think it's more about the value of time. I am more of a casual, but I do wish it was more social.

    Whenever I log into WoW nowadays, I am a bit sad how the chat almost only consists of LFG, spamming of offers etc. Back when I began playing MMORPGs, I enjoyed just going up to strangers for asking for help with a quest or something a lot. I didn’t play WoW back then, only Fiesta Online, Last Chaos, Runes of Magic and lots of others. Back then it was a world to be explored and nowadays it’s just some story, probably interesting and often not mysterious or greatly engaging a lot at all, and some news collectibles, that’s it. At least that’s how I experience it. All the fragmentation with all the Classic, Cataclysm etc. professions and the levelling process with the Chromie timeline thing is just so dissatisfying. The one big reason I keep playing retail is the beautiful and great world design. It’s not really the creepy, mysterious and wondrous World of actual Warcraft back in Classic times. But all this opinion is based on me never having played in an actually socially active guild, in Raids etc. Everyone you see is just some stranger you don’t really have to care about, it’s a bit sad. I’m happy to see someone disagreeing with or telling me about an approach to retail that would change my mind on this. 😀

      Get on a RP realm, unless you wanna raid high end the chat is rarely spammed (on EU at least) and its still pretty social thats my main reason for still being on RP realms

    • @talkingwow
      @talkingwow  5 месяцев назад

      Also RP realms have sharding off by default so that also helps massively too.

    • @talkingwow

      Interactions with people in the world are few and far between in retail simply because there is no need to communicate with anyone. That's not saying they don't happen, though. If you play Classic WoW or Hardcore, I have found people do sometimes make more of an effort because there aren't tools like LFG. Putting in like that does make it seem a bit sad, for sure!
      It is a shame, as I met some of my best friends in the game by chance, but the game, player base, and so much more have evolved. However, with this evolution, we have seen communities and such form outside of the game, which also comes with massive benefits. While you can enjoy WoW solo now, it's always been enhanced by playing with like-minded individuals who support and encourage each other.

    world of warcraft was a social mmorpg where you explored the WORLD. now more a singel player with a multiplayer option for getting better gear. sad to say but our demands on fly mounts really helped to kill the world, you could easily see that when they added it, you don't run in to people

    • @thomasschmidt7989
      @thomasschmidt7989 5 месяцев назад +2

      The game started being less a social mmorpg when they started with the group finder in lich king
      Back then you had to have a lot of people in your friends list or an active guild to run anything now its only one klick away and you are in a dungeon/raid
      so the big plus that being in a guild was having people to do content with doesnt really excist anymore i think that it was led to beinga more of a single player game with mmorpg aspects

      yes flying absolutely did a huge blow to social interaction, anyone that argues otherwise is a retail coper.

      @@thomasschmidt7989 this is such a dumb take,group finder is so irelevant these days,used just wile lvling,m+ is the same as back then,people have to find others,wow was more social back then because there was no facebook,heck even myspace only came out in 2003,an mmo that was also a social space was insane
