  • A complete example of how to setup a medium-to-large scale AE2 network with some key elements covered: A dedicated backbone P2P network, auto-crafting, material income, ore processing and storage.
    After doing a lot of videos about AE2 tutorials, this can be seen as a summary of the big and most important areas when building a larger network. The methods used in this video should be enough to cover the needs up until or maybe even past end-game.
    If anything isn't clear, check the AE2 playlist to find the areas you need to repeat (I have covered every part of this video in one way or another before). But feel free to ask, of course :)
    Key items and topics for this video:
    - ME Network
    - ME Controller
    - Dense and Smart Cable
    - P2P ME and RF and EU Tunnel
    - Crafting Storage / Co-Processor
    - ME Interface / Molecular Assembler
    - Memory Card
    - Quantum Network Bridge
    I have done several videos about AE2, so if there are items or blocks not covered in this one they can probably be found in another video. All my AE2 tutorials can be found in this playlist:

    5:01 The reason this system was using 9K RF/t is because of that Wireless ME access point! It's power usage (With 64 boosters is 8.21K RF/t). SO this means that without that there, this entire system would only cost around 1.5K RF/t! Hope this helps some people =)

    Thank you TKH for so many clear explanations, really enjoyed these videos. I'm playing Sky Factory 2.5 and these have helped a lot. So far I've found it too difficult to diagnose issues in an ever expanding network, so fall back to Tesseracts and Ender Chests :) Hope to have such a well designed setup as yourself at some point ...

    Very easy to understand setup of a complex MENetwork. I especially appreciate the use of subnets and parallel dedicated networks to illustrate practical use of the concept. My own networks tend to be chaos oriented.

      +God of Orion Thanks! But to be honest, my latest base had a chaos network and I never got around to fix it... The challenge is not to make a "good" network, it is to plan out the base 50 hours before getting to the point where you need such a network ;)

    • @therealtkh
      @therealtkh  8 лет назад

      +Ben Gordon (NodrogJRB) I don't know how you've done it, pictures with explanation could help... I think a common error is that the Memory Card is used in the wrong way. Shift right click on the side close to the controller and then only right click on the other side (in the different rooms). Tunnels are "1 to N", so one input and several outputs. It doesn't matter if tunnels are in a separate network or in the main, but you probably want them in a separate (only powered network) for simplicity.

    I don't suppose AE2 has any solutions for fluids? I'm playing on Blightfall, which is very limited in tech mods, which forces me to use a lot of MFR tech where I'd normally be using EnderIO or something along those lines. In MFR, a lot of machines require (or produce) significant quantities of essence, which is basically a variant of liquid XP. I'm going to have Sewers set up in mob breeding rooms, I'll be doing most of my mob slaying with grinders, and I'll have a couple of dedicated autospawner chambers as well as other infrastructure - piping essence around the base is probably going to be just as important to the final base as the ME cabling. It'd be nice to handle that in the ME network so I could easily monitor the buffer (see if it's getting filled or drained from the autospawners and such) using the ME system.
    If not, I'll set up a room with a bank of drums where I can see what's going on and just run fluiducts alongside the network cables.

    • @rashkavar
      @rashkavar 6 лет назад

      If anyone's reading this, the answer is P2P tunnels. Or the mod extension that specifically does this the way Thaumic Energistics adds in Essentia storage. But yeah, P2P tunnels can be configured to move fluids around. It's not the same, but it should do a decent job of piping around that one fluid that you need everywhere, if you have such a fluid.

      If extra cells 2 is installed, use that. Otherwise, you will have to use P2P

  • @MindFiend
    @MindFiend 8 лет назад

    In this video you have a p2p tunnel for your RF power. It looks like there is only one place where power is going into that tunnel, and yet at least two places that are taking power out of the tunnel. Is that possible? Can you have 1 input and several outputs for the same tunnel?

    • @therealtkh
      @therealtkh  8 лет назад +1

      +Mind Fiend Yes, that's correct. All p2p tunnels are 1 to n. That means one input and many outputs. It's the same for RF, ME channels, lights, and so on. If we take RF or lighting, it's of course natural to have one input and lots of outputs. But for ME networking it depends on your needs and the purpose of the p2p connection. I have done a few videos on this subject if you want to know more.

  • @lbgrob

    Can you explain why you need the solo controller... could you have done the same thing coming off one of the controllers onthe main controller stack or does it need to be separate?

    • @therealtkh
      @therealtkh  9 лет назад

      +lbgrob Sure thing. It is possible to use a cable from the main controller to transfer a dense cable within the same network. But that would consume channels from the main network. My approach (with a sub net with its own controller) will make sure that all channels you extract from the main controller can be used. You won't lose anything by doing this, except for the fact that you might need another controller. But as I said in the video, up to 4 in / 4 out you can use a thin cable (as I did in a previous video) and no controller in the sub net. I hope this answers your question.

    • @rashkavar
      @rashkavar 7 лет назад +1

      One thing that's worth noting is that AE2 and Refined Storage both fit nicely into the underground portions of your base. Unless you want an insanely sci fi build, putting this stuff out where it's visible will look terrible.
      Secondly, if you can, opt for Refined Storage instead of AE2. AE2 is a vastly more complex mod and refined storage does effectively the same thing, with about a third of the effort. Getting a system fully in place is still a big process, but it's so much more forgiving than AE2.
      (That said, it is possible that some of the really high end AE2 functions aren't in Refined Storage - the guy who made RS may not have known all the tricks that he had to implement to fully replace AE2)

    • @pauldelol
      @pauldelol 3 года назад

      @@rashkavar One of the biggest reasons people say RS is better than AE2 is because RS doesn’t use channels. However, you can disable that in the AE2 config. Knowing this, it’s now pretty much personal preference. ChosenArchitect also said RS was way laggier than AE2 so I dunno

    • @rashkavar
      @rashkavar 3 года назад

      @@pauldelol Yeah, I've since learned that RefinedStorage is a bit of a resource hog compared to AE2, though that and literally anything else in my comment may have changed by now: 3 year old comments on actively supported mods are like that. I've not kept up on things for at least 2 years.
      Personally, I actually like AE2's channel system, though I do wish there was a more stable supply of Certus Quartz built into the modpack - it's very reliant on quarrying or on packs that provide duplication or resource crop options to get an industrial grade AE2 network in place. But that's because I like the extra bit of logic puzzle involved in laying out channels efficiently. I fully respect those who are not interested in that.

    • @therealtkh
      @therealtkh  3 года назад

      Yes, that can save channels for sure! But remember that if you place a terminal within that room you can't reach the other parts of the network. It's possible to do this bi-directional but auto-crafting won't work in that case.

  • @rashkavar
    @rashkavar 7 лет назад +1

    Very useful. I could almost see a variant of this being lesson 1 for an AE2 tutorial series...and actually, that's kinda how I'm using it - I know enough from refined storage to understand things like "Storage Bus" and "Interface" and while P2P tunnels are kinda weird to me (they're not in RS because RS doesn't fuss over channels), this is actually the video that showed me what they are and why they're useful
    Every tutorial for AE2 is very much bottom up, but for someone like me who prefers a top down approach (and has seen a fully functional ME system on this kind of level in action, it's much easier to see how you get the insanely awesome final product from this kind of set up rather than iterating on slightly more complex baby networks. Now I just need to figure out what farms I need/want for my Blightfall base and I'll be able to bring something like this online!
    (I'm definitely expecting to hit stumbling blocks in the details, but there's this nice little playlist that covers a bunch of different topics really well)
    Cheers!

    • @therealtkh
      @therealtkh  6 лет назад

      Interesting, I usually prefer to learn from bottom up but for a semi-complex mod, perhaps it can be useful to see the end result and understand WHY one should learn the basics. Glad to hear they're still useful!

    • @rashkavar
      @rashkavar 6 лет назад

      It's probably my background. I studied engineering in university (not an engineer - just got the degree), which kinda teaches a top down approach to design. Engineers usually have EITs, technicians, and regular workers who are competent for solving the little issues, while their focus is on getting the overall system set up such that everything works together.
      If this were all real, the engineer looking after the network would have a thermal expansion consultant saying "I need __ channels, ___ RF/t and ___ crafting processor capacity" and would get all the thermal expansion machines set up as long as those needs were met. Engineering at that level is as much people management as it is technological prowess.
      And let's face it, if this were real, the total number of channels being requested would be about a thousand more than the ME controller could provide, and there'd be no way to upgrade the controller for some reason, and it'd all be a nightmare.

    • @therealtkh
      @therealtkh  6 лет назад

      Haha, I've never really looked at the modded Minecraft scene from a company or project point of view. I'm an Electronics Engineer myself, I guess it's why I like to make these networks and make all components work together in an optimal or at least logical way... The best part is that I'm my own customer and project manager!

    • @rashkavar

      Heh, then I'm sure you're very familiar with how work projects go. My specialty was in mining and mineral processing, and the university aspect stressed the idea that you really _need_ to know what the overall plan is before you can do anything else.
      Mining is kinda weird in that there are a lot of ways to do it that are fundamentally unlike any other method - open pit mines to get at it from above, stope mining methods where you dig under the ore and rip it out of the ceiling, and a bunch of different philosophies about attacking the ore body by digging down to its level and attacking it from the side....not to mention the specialist things like those beastly bucketwheels used for coal and oil sand mining, quarrying methods where you're trying to harvest large slabs of rock, etc.
      And on the processing side, you're usually crushing and milling your ore down to a target particle size, but sometimes you're running it through centrifuges, sometimes it's a high power magnet, sometimes it's a flotation system (add chemicals that make the useful minerals in the ore attach to bubbles, then pipe bubbles through the mix so it all rises to the top), and sometimes you're doing some chemical process like cyanidation and have to be really paranoid about pH levels to avoid gassing your workers.
      With that kind of variability, you don't do bottom up design. You do modeling and lab tests to see what will work (more modeling for the mining stage, more lab tests for the processing stage), then custom fit all the details needed to make that actually happen. Then you give a very long document to the bean counters in hopes that they'll actually give you the money you need to buy all the crap you're going to need...which is a LOT of money.
      So yeah, for me, I know what I want my ME system to be doing, more or less. I have the model in my head, and I'm trying to custom fit the network to match those requirements. As I'm soloing the project, I wind up wearing the boots of all those technicians doing the detail work as well, of course.

      That was an interesting read, and a good comparison :) In this world of Minecraft tutorials, most of them are made from the bottom and up, but I can of course understand the strength in first showing what the end goal is - and then start from the beginning to get there... It adds a lot of additional work to preparations or that 10 episodes has to be prepared or almost recorded before I can make the first video where I explain where the series will lead ;)

      +Mr.mime619 You still have problems? Please provide more info about your world, modpack and setup. Screenshots are always good! It sounds like you haven't connected the tunnels together... Make sure you put it on the correct side, the "tunnel network" is not always a part of the system, depending on how you've connected things.

    • @therealtkh
      @therealtkh  8 лет назад

      +Xafer S I just noticed that your message got stucked in the spam folder (probably because of the link). Do you still have a problem? I can take a look at it tonight in that case. I don't know if it matters what direction you set up the p2p tunnel (with memory card).. I mean, what side to start with (because it is "1 to n" connection).
      Was tricky to follow every step in the album, but the direction of the tunnel is of course important, for example, on the ME drive side you have 6 drives on one cable, should that go through the tunnel? In that case what is the 7th channel? Is the tunnel facing the wrong way? You can't use a dense cable as "p2p subnet" cable all the way, in the end you'll have to use a thinner cable to attach the tunnel on.

    • @therealtkh
      @therealtkh  8 лет назад +1

      +Grumpy Mittens You can manage quite long with only one controller block. If handled perfectly you can get 192 channels out of it, and that's enough for a small-medium sized base depending on how much you need to have connected. But it's hard to build perfectly, and since the block isn't very expensive it's easier to have a couple of controller blocks and waste some channels to get a more logical wiring :)

    • @therealtkh
      @therealtkh  8 лет назад

      +Grumpy Mittens Ok, I don't know the recipe there, but in any way... You can manage with only one controller block up to the point where you have automated mining, ore doubling, sorting, auto-crafting and interaction to many other mods. As I said, 192 channels is still quite a lot if cables are used properly.

But my main tutorial world for AE2 is now unplayable due to lag (but if that is due to server or client lag is unknown to me). In that world I used a lot of frames and signs, and I think both are known to cause lag. But only within render distance, because if I turn the other way framerate goes up to 60 as expected, but around 15 when looking that way - even though all objects are behind walls. As I have heard you need at least a medium computer but with lots of RAM to run a server in a good way.

      @@stingray775gaming8 Oh wow, that's impossible to answer. It only depends on what type of machines or functions you want to have in there. Auto-crafting or storage doesn't take much room at all, processing ores/ingots/etc takes a little more but some mods require large structures and then it might be better to have a new building for those builds. And in that case, they might need only one 32-channel output, but it's really up to what you want to do. However, the tricky part is to plan ahead because you always need more space than you think, and it's hard to know before building how many things you want to have in there...
