The Montreal Screwjob ia the beginning of the Attitude Era. The Era that changed Wrestling forever.

I wouldn't say it was the beginning. They'd already started doing the raunchy stuff a year prior when DX formed. The screw job certainly escalated it, though.

There's a lot more to the Hart/WWE drama.
Bret's brother Owen died in the middle of a WWE PPV while performing a stunt. They were lowering him down from the ceiling and the faulty equipment caused him to fall to his death. It was a major event that never happened before.
Bret also was given a stiff kick by Goldberg which ended his career. Later on while riding his bike he had a stroke due to the concussion which made it hard for him to even walk again.
Part of the reason he forgave WWE was because he felt his anger over what happened to him was so crippling to him and he thought it might have led to his stroke.

The MADUSA ( like "made in USA") incident was talked about at the beginning of the video. Madusa was a famous female wrestler, she was in WWE for a couple of years, going by the name Alundra Blayze. She was the women's champion in 95 and she left the company before she could lose the title and she debuted in WCW using the name MADUSA again and putting the WWF women's championship literally in the trash. Vince McMahon was so mad that there was no actual women's division for 3 years in WWF. He didn't want Brett Hart to do the same thing as MADUSA. Ironically, when Ric Flair signed with WWE in1991 he was the NWA-WCW champion and he did appear with the belt on WWF TV. Double standard.

Flair had the belt because WCW wouldn't return the deposit he had on the belt. Not to mention that the WWF did not disrespect the WCW Championship, instead using it to factor Flair into the main event scene while being billed as the "True World Champion".

The ratings war between WWF and WCW were no joke. It was not just between two rival professional wrestling companies, but two competing cable television networks as well. WWF Raw was on the USA Network, owned by Viacom, while WCW Nitro was on TNT, owned by Time Warner, at the same time.
This is in the days before DVRs existed, and you could record what you wanted to watch later. The only method for doing anything close to that was by recording it on a VHS cassette with a VCR.

  • @GeorgeD1965
    @GeorgeD1965 7 дней назад

Vince didn't trust Bisoff, but he should have trusted Brett. Brett always kept his word and he said he would appear the next day on Raw and give up the belt. As for Shawn, yeah, he was wild and moody back then, with the pills, that happens. As for his tag partner Marty, Marty was actually a bit more wild than Shawn and he went too far and they let him go. Undertaker said he likes Shawn now after he straighten himself out, but back then, he didn't like him much but, he said in the ring, Shawn was was king. When Shawn lost the match to Austin for the title and left, during that match, his back was killing him bad, real bad, they all said they don't know how he got through the match the way he did. When Shawn came back after getting healthy in both body and mind, he apologized to many and everyone said what a turn around, he's a great guy now. Brett, he had the grudge for years, which I kind of understand that. Glad they made up.

28:50 bunny Shawn never lost his smile. It was the humor he put on that promo. He was having the best time of his life that time with all the limelight, backstage politics of kliq and screwing sunny.
53:31 also, for how was it possible. See, wrestling, at least for some, if its a family business, like Hart, they respect every notion of it. The time honor tradition in wrestling is if you leave a territory or a promotion, you lose all the way out. In McMahon's head, Bret was not doing that. So even if he screws Bret and any legal action would take place, Vince would come out as a hero coz he followed the "tradiotion of wrestling", while Bret disrespected it. Fans would come on his side, maybe even Bret's family would come on Vince' side, and Bret himself would be considered a money grabbing traitor who sold his art for money.
50:43 also, the madusa incident is the same alundra blayze incident mentioned before in the video where she left WWF as their women's champion, only to join WCW a week later as Madusa and threw the women's championship in a dustbin as a disrespect. McMahon was not at all ready to see Hart doing that to his most prized possession, the WWF championship. But if you ask me, Hart would have never done that if he left as WWF championship. I would only suggest Vince got paranoid.

Bunny, I'll tell you again.... watch "Wrestling With Shadows".... it's a documentary from Bret's point of view, that details the events from 1 year prior to the Screwjob, through its completion. Bret had a film crew following him around for that year, and documented the whole thing. Even some stuff that was not meant to be made public.

    • @IggyStardust1967
      @IggyStardust1967 6 месяцев назад +2

12:30 - Also, this info is why I keep telling you to watch the "Reliving the War" series from "Wrestling Bios", because they cover this week by week, in a very in depth manner. You can see the trends of WHY each show wins that week, based on both matches and promos, who shows up, and who doesn't. The "Reliving the War" series goes from the first time WCW Monday Nitro debuts, and is scheduled to run until the WWE buys out WCW. Also, each PPV is covered in detail during that time period, as they are very relevant to the Monday Night War (PPVs at the time took place on Sunday nights, so the Monday night shows followed up 24 hours later).
Bunny, I know you want to "fast track" your knowledge of this era... but there really is no way to do that without missing a LOT of what caused it all to happen the way it did. So, do yourself a favor.... take your time about it. You'll learn a lot more about not only THAT era, but why so many fans want to see a return of that era today. Not to mention how the WWE is trying to give fans that, while not "crossing the line" into what is considered distasteful by today's standards.
It's not an easy line to walk. But I do think they are starting to figure it out. At least you don't really need to go back to the late 1970s and go forward from there, in order to catch up. So there IS that.

28:55 - You're 100% right about being happy where you work. BUT... that interview with Michaels just seemed so contrived, so.... FAKE..... that fans could see right through it. That wasn't Shawn Michaels saying he had "lost his smile", that was Michael Hickenbottom (Shawn's real name) declaring that he wasn't happy with what was planned for him, so he was going to "take his ball and go home". I'll grant you, it's always best to be happy where you work, but it's another to act like a toddler because you aren't happy with your job. Especially when you're "in front of the world" and making such a declaration without even discussing it with your boss ahead of time.
I've quit jobs I was unhappy with before.... but I always tried to hash things out first, and in private. There was no real reason to go on TV and make the boss look bad, just because he could. Especially when the same employer had already bent over backwards to make him happy before this. But even Shawn admits, now, that he was wrong for his attitude problems at the time.
32:10 - Also, this Bret vs Austin match is a MUST watch! I know you hate seeing blood, but do yourself a favor and watch that match, even though you already know the outcome.
52:15 - Shawn was Vince's "future". His "Top Draw" as far as the box office goes. With Shawn, he could literally "print money", and have "Sold Out" signs at every event. Bret was on his way out, but had that pesky "Creative Control" clause in his contract. Without that, Bret would have been completely screwed over by the WWE. So.... "Money talks, Bret Hart walks"...
53:00 - Like him, love him, or hate him, Jim Cornette is a "Pro-Wrestling Historian". Such a thing had happened before, many, many moons ago. All Cornette did was to suggest that history repeats by screwing over the reigning champion to get the belt off of him. (Cornette actually talks about this on one of his podcasts, and he cites people and dates)
52:15 - Oh, yeah... I had forgotten about the Wendy Richter mess.....
53:50 - Vince was willing to take ALL of the blame, pay whatever fines he had to, including "breach of contract" fines, just to ensure that Bret did NOT show up on Nitro with the WWF Championship belt. What he had forgotten, is that such a thing couldn't happen, given the debacle nearly a decade before with Ric Flair, AND the Medusa incident (which was mentioned earlier in the video). Bischoff even admitted that he wouldn't have dared to ask Hart to bring the belt to Nitro, given what had happened in the past regarding Championships popping up on the competition's shows. Plus, Bret had more integrity than to do something like that.
1:00:30 - As much as I hate to say it, you can't really be mad at Shawn, Earl, or any of the other "low level" employees involved. They had no choice but to do what they were told. Vince, Cornette, and the other "Management" people who knew.... fine. Be mad at them. After all, THEY had the choice about what happened. But there's a lot more involved than just "boss vs employee" at play here. Naturally, none of the "employees" wanted to lose their job, so they went along with it. Undertaker, by now the "Locker Room Leader", was absolutely LIVID over what happened. Mick Foley refused to show up the following night for Raw. Undertaker forced Vince to go talk to Hart, and even told him that he had to "Give Bret 'One'"..... meaning, he had to allow Bret to punch him one time. Which, of course, he did. Taker also made Vince justify the Screw Job to the other "boys in the locker room", in a meeting the next night before Raw. Undertaker is the only wrestler who could hold Vince accountable to his employees. Because at THIS point, none of them would ever trust Vince again, without an explanation.

Bret didn't sue because he was already out of his WWF contract, they let him go so he could make a contract with WCW, he was basically a free agent with WWF during those last few weeks then if he had sued then it would most likely be a very long court case, Bret broke tv equipment after the screw job and punched his former boss in the face. Basically both Bret and WWF decided it was just best if both walked away from everything. Bret made millions in WCW while WWF would eventually beat WCW with them being eventually shut down and all WCW assets being bought by WWE in 2001.
The Monday Night Wars was something special where two top tier wrestling companies went head to head on Mondays to see who were get the bigger crowd, revenue and ratings.

As of now they’re are on good terms.
That being said Shawn turned his live around and made sure he said sorry to most if not all of the guys he had wronged in the past when he returned from his back injury, so he’s one of my favorites bc of his in-ring abilities, charisma and all of his accomplishments, in the other hand i love bret for his in-ring abilities and his in-ring psychology about the business among other things, even though I dont always agree with what he has to say in some interviews

I'm fairly certain that Vince in the locker room intentionally tried to provoke Brett into hitting him to prevent him from suing by having the ability to counter sue or file a follow up lawsuit against Brett for assaulting him. It really is a shame that one of the greatest (if not THEE greatest) technical wrestlers of all-time had his wrestling career with WWE marred by exec's who took his humble hardworking attitude for granted, but I will say I'm glad they reconciled and I'm pretty sure that altercation eventually led to Shawn getting his act straight and becoming a better version of himself after.

There’s a small detail about the meeting that ends with Bret knocking Vince out that this video doesn’t mention, but gets revealed by Undertaker himself in an interview about what went down on this night from his POV. Taker said “I was suspicious that something might happen that night, but I ended up letting my guard down when I really shouldn’t have.” And the detail that this video leaves out is that, after Undertaker brought Vince down to the locker room to explain his actions, he actually pulled Shawn Michaels off to the other side of the locker room AWAY from where Bret and Vince were talking because, “I knew that at some point, Shawn was gonna try and get involved in this discussion, and he REALLY didn’t need to do that, because this situation was already volatile enough.”

Since then, I've watched WWE on and off over the decades. I am really impressed on how quickly engaged you are to WWE and wrestling in as a whole. As far as the Montreal Screwjob goes, this is the story to be engaged to.

Honestly as an international viewer the concept of Hart being a heel in the US but a face everywhere else sounds like a fantastic idea to me. Ever since being a kid I've been a wrestling fan and even as that little kid I would always roll my eyes at the endless amount of storylines that were little more than "American man is the good guy, foreign people are evil". From Hogan to Cena, the gimmick of just being the human embodiment of the American flag made me cringe.

This is why I didn't like so much Triple H and Shawn Michaels, and I sided with Bret Hart, I'll always recognize the talent of Shawn Michaels, but the opportunism, betrayal, backstage politics, corruption of Shawn Michaels, Triple H, in association with Vince, it was disgusting, and now is coming out in recent lawsuits what happened. I like Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, and Undertaker, because they never participated in that corruption, they become top stars on their own.

What wasn't included as much as it should be, young Shawn Michaels was just not a very pleasant person to be around in general, as a lot of people are. When the drugs came into play it was like gasoline on the fire. In 1997, Shawn Michaels was in a complete nosedive. His private life was falling apart and his addiction was at its absolute worst. He was as close to rock bottom as one could get and still be functional. And he was barely functioning. I only bring it up because you're seeing the Shawn Michaels that you know as the guy being talked about in this story. Two absolutely different guys. Guys who were around then and now, like Undertaker for one, have said that by November of 1997, with the condition Shawn was in, no one would be shocked in the least if Shawn was dead by November 1998. Shawn Michaels breaking his back in December and having to take those 4 years off probably saved his life. He got married, he got off drugs and got himself sober and found religion. I'm not a religious guy, but more power to anyone who uses whatever means they can to get their lives in order and maintain.

Shawn Michaels has grown up and gotten off the drugs and is a much better person that has helped create so many stars, every addict has to get to rock bottom before they change and losing his career seems to be the best thing for Shawn look at the return after the retirement, 2 Wrestlemanias with The Undertaker and a lot of other stuff including the public apology to Brett Hart on RAW, I was not a fan of Shawn Michaels until he took over NXT. However if he didn't have the stories he would just be another small guy in the world of big men

Vince shld have sued Bret for assault for punching him backstage. At the end of the day there is a time honor tradition in the business to put someone else over on your way out, but Bret refused to do so showing his lack of professionalism. Since Bret did not want to do business, business had to be done for him. At the end of the day the referee did not screw Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels did not screw Bret Hart, Vince did not screw Bret Hart, it was Bret hart that screwed Bret Hart. And Bret can look into the mirror and know that.

  • @Josh_JKL

I do feel sorry for Bret, not for the 'Screwjob' but for the BS Vince did with his contract in the lead up. Bret deserved the Screwjob to happen, because both he and Shawn acted like petulant children over the last couple years leading up to that match, he had been selfish (although most wrestlers at that time were) and worst of all he attacked Michaels in the locker room. Provoked or not, it was unprofessional and you lose a lot of respect and the moral high ground with actions like that. There is also the old unwritten rule that use to be 'You go out on your back' meaning if you leave or retire you should take the lose and 'put over' other talent on the way out. I am surprised that a traditionalist like Bret would not adhere to that.

Shawn is not at all the same man now that he was then. I have thought that since most of these videos are meant for people who already know the reality of current day wrestling, they don’t usually explain that Shawn is a changed man because most of us already know that. I have thought though that you might come away with a tainted opinion of him because most of the videos only mention it in passing and don’t go into the story of him turning his life completely around and becoming from most accounts a completely different person. I should make clear that the videos you have watched don’t go into that because usually Michaels is just a side character in those videos, but if you found one that focused on him and his life story, it would talk about his conversion to Christianity and then subsequent attitude change. In his second run, he was known as a much more patient and kind wrestler, but even Shawn has talked ad nauseam about how awful a person he was at this point in his life. Hopefully you see this comment so you understand the full context.

28:04 Undertaker is that dude. At WrestleMania 14 Shawn Michaels was scheduled to drop the title to Stone Cold Steve Austin but Shawn’s back was in bad shape and he decided he wasn’t gonna do business. Undertaker caught wind of this and taped up his fists and went to find Shawn. Once he did he walked up to him and told him he will go out there and do his job and put on a hood show or else they’re gonna go right there. He backed down and went on to do his job. Undertaker is well respected and someone you don’t wanna cross.
