I travled over 600 miles with gas at 3$ to post this video for steam fans worldwide @ worth every penny. If you like it,kick a few stars my way and i might dig around 4 some more :) THANKS!! SkipW Авто/Мото
the video that made me become a railfan. oh how I remember this video as a little kid.
Same. This was on my birthday. May 3
+Thunderbolt 1000 Siren Productions Good to hear that! It is rather dated now, sure wish I had a HD cam back then.
One day my dad showed me this video when I was learning how to talk. My mouth hit the ground and I became obsessed with trains.
Man, whem a was kid, and my father show me this video i never forget him, one day i have lost this video, and after years, YEARS i found, and save this video, and i never lost him again, thanks for this video, really, thanks for this video, i like pretty much trains because of this video, because of you have record this, thanks
Thanks for the video. My grandfather and great-grandfather both were UP engineers on steam trains. My great-grandfather died in 1947 in a train accident when the train he was on derailed in Sweetwater County, WY due to a track problem. He died later in the hospital that day of the burns suffered in the accident. My grandfather was always proud of having been an engineer on one of the Big Boys. Both were UP engineers out of Rawlins.
My daughter is two and this is her favorite video to date. She sits and watches this about two or three times every week. Great video. Now I have something I can share with my daughter that connects me to my childhood. In addition, my father was a serious model railroad collector. It has all come full circle.
Just showed this to my daughter who is about to be 5 in a few days. First time seeing a steam engine. Very different than NYC subway trains. She loved it! Choo choo'd and woo woo'd and psssshhh, best fun :)
This has to be one of the BEST videos ever, if you love trains. This is just outstanding.
The mighty steam maschines of the past look waaaaaay better then the modern diesel/electric ones. I always get exited when I see a steam engine in action, I guess that's the kid in me.
My father worked for the railways in India and when I was about 4 he let clean the brass fittings on the engine. Then later, the scent of the engine, the steam, the increasing frequency of the steam puffs as the engine accelerated - got me facinated by the wonderful creation of the steam engine. Then later, my father was in charge of the train from Kalka (where we lived) to Simla (where I went to school. No greater invention than the staem engine!
Thanks for the great video. My grandfather was an engineer on a steam locomotive in the 30's and 40's and I got to ride on the steam trains. It was a great ride, lots of cinders and dirt.
I've watched this video at least 15 or 20 times... Every time I see it I am struck by just how beautiful this train is!
Very big locomotive! Nice video.
Greetings from Germany.
Bidone
What a lovely sound when they passing Harriman.Love it!
To this day this is the closest man has come to making a living breathing machine. I love it BRAVO!
She sounds right;she runs right and she looks right-mechanical perfection.Thank you for this outstanding video!
10:24 goes to show how much power steam has, even though that boiler and eveything weighs as much as it does, and even the wheels as big as they are and hard to turn, it still manages to spin them, steam will always be a force to be reckoned with
it's a great old steam train hiistory!!... thanks, my youngest (son still one and half year age) were waiting for enjoying this film...
I dont know a lot about locos but have loved them ever since i was a little kid. I think its nuts that those engines have the balls to spin the wheels like that
I love this video! Thank you so much. My grandfather, his father, and his grandfather all worked on the L & N & NC & St. L railroad. I grew up loving steam. : ))
when the train is right beside you on the highway it looks so natural i dunno what about steam engines it is but they are beautiful :)
notice the diesel helper engine behind the second tender
I just love seeing the steam pouring out of those things. Their horns sound so beautiful, too.
Evocative, stately and powerful. Thank you.
Steam Locomotive No. 844 is the last steam locomotive built for Union Pacific Railroad. It was delivered in 1944. A high-speed passenger engine, it pulled such widely known trains as the Overland Limited, Los Angeles Limited, Portland Rose and Challenger.
When diesels took over all of the passenger train duties, No. 844 was placed in freight service in Nebraska between 1957 and 1959. It was saved from being scrapped in 1960 and held for special service.
Thanks for posting this Skip. Awesome loco. Curious how such mighty engines can also invoke a sense of beauty.
What a wonderfull steamlocomotiv. I enjoyed every single minute.
Greetings from Sarpsborg, NORWAY
We really enjoyed that. What a monster of a machine. Just beautiful.
Marvellous to see the old beauty still running! Reminds me of my childhood in East Africa, going on 48 hour journeys on the narrow-gauge line from Dar es Salaam to Mwanza, hauled by British-made locomotives.
How wonderful. Thanks so much for posting this. I can smell it from here...
The burnouts at 10:20 are my favorite. That was awesome of the crew to do that for you.
Excellent!! Thank you for posting such a fine video. Brings back a lot of good memories from years past
I remember the last steam train to Atlantc City N.J. The turn table in town was long gone, and only one good track was left into town, the other was torn up. I remember the mournful wail of it's whistle as it went back to Phila backwards. When I was a kid, those Steam trains regularly set the marshs on fire with their sparks. I walked the tracks and the later diesels really could sneak up on you with their brownish shimmering light . LOL
The black one is a 14 wheel Centipede Tender and is the Tender that was delivered with the locomotive. The yellow tender just carries extra water because these days it is hard to find places to stop and water up as many of the old water towers that serviced these beasts have been removed. The yellow tender was actually an old fuel tender from the 8500 HP Gas Turbine Locomotives that the UP used to run.
In all seriousness, the meet is awesome. They finally got a load behind it so you can actually hear it pull. Awesome video.
Thanks a lots for this brought some very good memory.
As someone who has worked with all types of steam power over 35 years, I can tell you that steam machines are living machines. They have good days and bad days just like we do. They all have their own natures and sometimes do what they want to do. Spend some time around steam if you can. You may see what we mean.
What a beauty..hats off to the maintenance crew who keep her going ..
love the mournful cry of her whistle ...
Starts out great, passes through fantastic, ...and then I'm out of adequate superlatives! The pacing scenes are best I've seen! Thanks!
Brilliant Skip...well shot first class mate!
Nice video, Skip, thanks a lot. I can see a lot went into shooting from each vantage point then putting it all together. Lovely.
thanks for the video mi 3 year old boy enjoyed it so much he fell asleep watching and listening to mellow sound of this grandeur thanks again.
W O W!!! What a beautiful sight; thanks for shooting this video. This is a magnificent machine.
A steam train passes near my house every night, and ive fallen in love with the sound. I love falling asleep to it.
fantastic, loved the shots fron the car,i know what its like to stand around in all weathers waiting for a steamer to show up as they are often late here in the U K .thanks for shareing it with us.Tony
I saw a classic steam machine restored here in The Netherlands a while back. Amazing, like going back in time!
i just graduated to Student Brakeman. So I like this video. We have several steam engines in Connersville.
nice slips at 10:28 and 10:40ish
good job capturing a cool machine
Listen to that stack talk, I LOVE IT.
The chasing scene in your presentation here is one of the best out there. Keep it up.
Yes,my bad.Mountains were 4-8-2s.Was already tuckerd out from work, and the 2 yr old was not ready to sleep at 11:30.She will set with sheer amazment watchin these vids,as well as I.
WOW. Thanks so much for recording this GORGEOUS machine and letting us watch it. This mechanical marvel was made by men without computers. Watched this with my 3 year old son and we both were mesmorized. Great shots out the car window. KIDS keep this stuff 'alive'.
Fantastic Video. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks so much, I really enjoyed your video. It must have taken a lot of work to get ahead of that engine so often. Beginning around 10.05 was surprised to see & hear three times that engine spinning its wheels while already going at a good clip. She must have so much power that she just wants to run. Note the sparks/flames at the rear wheels as the engineer tries to throttle her back. A very neat video for sure, thanks again.
ya know, i just came on here in the mood to see a nice steamer and this clip did it. i love that sound, nothing like it ever. they are so alive. it's a shame there are no Big Boys in operating condition, that would be a thing to see
Well its a good thing that Union Pacific Railways didn't scrap the 844's! I heard that they are still running today! =D
wd for posting and your effort dude!
Greetings from Paris. I love your video. The segment where the machine is at full speed is really impressive. And the sounds, the billowing clouds of steam... well, everything is awesome. And I'm using that word in its original meaning.
@robertgift yea the release of steam directly through the cylinders is to clear out condensation
in reality, steam engines actually burn cleaner than people expect - 100% of everything coming out of the cylinders is steam, and a large part of what comes out of the stack is also just steam
how clean they burn can also be determined by what they burn. 844 here burns oil, but the Grand Canyon Railroad is converting a steam engine to burn vegetable oil
It's my son's (6) most favourite steam video! as he says: great lot of steam and great speed of steam and steam going up to the clouds. Why children love steam engines so much, and why they infecting their parents with the same?
The diesel is there for dynamic braking and backup. It's not doing much else. 844 is pulling it like any other car on the train.
You'd hear it if it were helping. You'd also see exhaust pouring out of its stack as well.
Pretty cool stuff Skip. Thanks
That is one nice observation car at the end! UP makes up (haha) for the western rr takeover by having their steam program with 844 and 3985. Nice vid! 5 stars
Wonderful steam engine. I thought these all had whistles, but I guess I was wrong. This one has a Nathan K5-HL horn, and a nice one.
Love the video. Thanks
Skip, you are the MAN
love the way the old steam horns sound!
that is such a beautiful train! nice camera work too!
Skip, thanks for your very great video! Super!!!

It has a very beautiful whistle.
that thing is a beast!!! you can hear that whistle for a mile damn...
Brilliant - huge locomotive to cover huge distances. In fact UK steam specials on the main line sometimes have a diesel attached as insurance - usually at the the rear. I don't see any evidence that the diesel was actually working, just being an extra load! Very good work and thanks for the effort.
@rjordan231 there are many steam locomotives still in service. There are even entire railways devoted to restoring and operating them. One of my favorites is the "keighley and worth valley" railway in england.
Wish i was there.. thanks for the great vid!
probably 45-50 mph there, but increasing the speed as we get north of Laramie @ 7:57 it is running close to 70mph
dude i live in wyoming this is awesome the 2 year old i babysit loves it
thanx
Spectacular Video Skip!! I need to get some footage of Milwaukee Road 261 next time she heads out.
I've been looking for this video with the wheel slip! Great five star capture!
Please excuse me if I've already commented this video before!
Well done, excelent footage, 5stars from England.
I LOVE your videos! Keep up the good work.

GREAT camera work, Skip! TERRIFIC pacing shots! :)
Fantastic!
Nice video Skip this may have been taken in 2007 but #844 is back on my neck of the railroad
Great camera work. I loved the camera position at 4:30 . It made the whole scene look like a well built model railway...Clever. Many Thanks for your efforts .

REALLY good camera work of a great looking old girl! My 2-year-old went nuts, going CHOO CHOO WOOO WOOO etc. (ahem, and maybe I joined him a bit)
beautiful.
nice video Skip history is repeating itself #844 is back in Idaho.
Elephant ears never looked sexier. Great shoot, Skip
That diesel engine is an insult to this majestic lady of the rails. UP should get rid of the diesel. Great video, love steam engines.
Skip awesome really awesome got to love the steam
I LOVE your video! Keep up the good work
Those are FLAMES jumping from the firebox! They gotta STOKE-UP the Boiler to get some steam pressure!
Great video *****
844 is a beautiful looking engine - one of the most beautiful US steam engines.
Perhaps function creates form creates beauty!! But then, I'm a sucker for steam engines!!
