Well, for it to be considered a firearm, it has to have a "barrel." So an argument might be made that a railgun doesn't have a barrel, it has a parallel set of rails which do not meet the definition of a barrel.
Assuming a "barrel" is a metallic tube typically used on firearms. And a "tube" is a cylinder used for transporting objects. And a cylinder =/= parallel rails.

That would be a coilgun, no?

    • @hugojmaia
      @hugojmaia 2 года назад +15

@@andrefilipe6757 The linear motor is literally 2 straight wires and a bar connecting them, the direction of the current determines where the bar goes, the value of the current determines how fast the bar accelerates. In a rail gun the wires are the 2 copper channels and the bar is the projectile.
A coilgun is something the people in this channel also made, it is a series of coils wrapped around a tube where you have to time the activation and deactivation of the magnetic field generated by the coils in order to accelerate a ferrous projectile. Doesn't require as high a voltage, but the circuitry is more complicated with a lot of fine tuning required.

One correction for you, the Navy has been working on railguns since at least the 70's. I worked on the Army's version back in the 80's.
And here's a couple of tips for you.
    1. Purge the barrel with He just before the shot. The lighter gas offers less resistance and will increase velocity.
    2. Try a lighter projectile. Al can be accelerated to a higher speed due to less mass. It's that velocity squared component that does the real damage.
    3. Cut a vertical slot into the back end of the projectile. The current through the projectile will force the tabs apart and give better contact with the rails and less rail ablation.
    4. Make an inductor from heavy wire to spread the pulse out. You should be able to optimize the pulse width to the time that the projectile will be in the barrel.5
    5. Increase the pressure of the injector. But you already know that.

Also if you're wondering why it didn't seem as powerful as it could be -- that's because we had to limit how powerful it was to remain inside legal limitations. A video isn't worth going to jail over.

You can increase your firing output and projectile velocity by using an oscillating power supply(modified sine inverter will do the trick) and incorporating a micro generator for faster recharge.

Most home built EM guns are sort of disappointing. If it were easy to make a lethal EM propelled firearm, they would be in widespread use. TBH, if that paintball gun was dialled up to max, it would be way more lethal with ball-bearings. Hence why paintball guns use calibres that aren't in line with common ball-bearing sizes. It avoids people getting a cheap and potentially lethal weapon with no collection of ID or licences. And keeps the heat off the sport of paintball from groups looking for someone to blame for making weapons available.
Though oddly, in the US at least, airguns with lethal projectile energy are not considered guns, so such considerations aren't needed anyhow. If it's not propelled by gunpowder, it's not a gun by US law. Most other countries define firarms by the projectile energy. IE projectile mass and velocity.

    Thank you for the video.
I believe that this qualifies as a gauss gun more than a railrun. A railgun has a physical carriage that the projectile sits and slides back and forth on when it gets moved by the magnetic field. A gauss gun has no moving parts and less friction but requires more power to operate
This was still a cool project no matter what you call it tho ;)

    • @snoig1

Hey guys-- if you build a controller with optical interruptor and give it half the capacitors when it's fired and the other half once it passes about 25 percent of the barrel length, it'll shoot it faster.
You will have to have a pretty good fast high-current switch, but you can use an SCR. What happens otherwise is that you run out of current before the projectile leaves the barrel.

Please do a redesign of this one into a UNSC halo railgun!!! It would be really fun to redesign some of your older project which dont fit any superhero/game weapon into one!

Everyone asking the reason/advantage just go back to the beginning where he talks about the navy developing them.
What is worse than having a bunch of munitions that could blow up in your boat? Munitions that require explosives to launch.
You can have the same amount of “fire power” with half the explosives in your munitions holds
You don’t need a large brass or steel case to hold the primers/powder to launch your projectile And you don’t have to have the massive breeches to contain the explosions launching the projectiles, reducing overall weight.

Richard Harding The question would be that would it be worth it right now and the years to come during its development. Currently if we were to implement a railgun weapons system to a ship all the advantages given by the railgun would be outweighed by the disadvantages.
The weight of the batteries and the gun's mechanisms itself may even just be more than the weight of a conventional weapons system which really doesn't 'reduce overall weight'

Derp Master it has better range and accuracy plus jas a much much higher bullet velocity meaning its easier to aim plus the loading process is much easier all and all its an improvement however this is likely something that wont be used for At least 10 to 15 years because of the cost of outfitting ships with these guns so untill its improved on more it wont see much use like that suit of power armour darpa is developing the only real disadvantage is the cost

Richard Harding not only that, but after 2 miles, the railgun has more velocity than you everyday battleship heavy guns.

Richard Harding actually 0 explosives they rely exclusively on kenetic energy to do damage

    • @CaptainLekirk
      @CaptainLekirk 7 лет назад +4

Energy isn't much of an issue either. Best ships use nuclear and, and some new ones are switching over.
Nothing is more horrible than a fire on a ship. Trust. Less munitions the better.

what you are explaining at 15:05 is called a sabot as shown at 15:15. it helps guide the projectile down the barrel and keep it straight and stable. Sabot rounds are made for shotguns too.

So do Canadian gun laws specify firearm-status by velocity of the bullet, not by the means it shoots? Because here in Finland if I'm not mistaken a firearm is a firearm if it uses combustion as a means of accelerating the projectile, otherwise it's a "toy". And there's no limit to the size of toys >:D

i think that over here in canada, you don't need a firearms license for it unless it shoots a projectile at over 500 feet per second or that produce over 12 ftlbs of power.

BlakOrkk There are some minor restrictions. You cannot buy a 6.35mm air rifle without a permit of some sort. But I don't take that as a problem as the smaller calibers pack some nice punch too. On the oyher hand, unlike Germany, we have no limits to airsoft-guns' power/firing modes, which is nice.
