This is clearly my favorite version of this tune. I never forget the first time I heard this. The highlight is when he starts singing at the end . Masterpiece
It's a shame I can't find this version on Spotify, I agree, I also love how he sings at the end with the alternative chord progression. His singing made him a fuller musician imo.
People like him don’t come along too often in this world.....this track is so foot tappingly good....all the rolls and the whimsical lines....he was amazing
I've stolen so many piano tricks from this guy and blown everyone I've met away. Booker is like a secret Ray Charles. His left hand is more rhythm than most players two.
I agree with most of what you said aside from using "black". Why can't he just be the best piano genius, period? There was no need to say it like that. His playing crossed over to every race, nationality and creed. Do you get what Im saying? This dude influenced many people of all races.
This is some fucking mind blowing shit. They don't make jazz pianist's like this anymore, even Dr. John and Harry Connick Jr. who are both great, pale in comparison IMHO.
Booker taught dr. john how to play the organ, and harry's dad let booker out on parole so long as he gave harry piano lessons at the age of 12. Harry and Jon cleary are regarded as the best interpreters of booker to this day... in terms of jazz...harry is far more advanced but nobody can play the blues like booker, NOBODY. Sometimes Booker couldn't even play the blues like booker! :)
The sound isn't very good. But Booker is definitely a virtuoso, and his version of On the Sunny Side of the Street remains the very best which I have ever listened to....👍👍👍👍
Booker was hired by Connick’s father, New Orleans District Attorney Harry Connick, Sr., to teach his son piano. Connick as a teenager was a pall bearer at Booker’s funeral.
+Cameron Brwdway This is most easily available on "New Orleans Piano Wizard: Live!" on Rounder Records. It was originally issued by Gold Records as "Boogie-Woogie and Ragtime Piano Contest." The album was recorded in Zurich on Nov. 27, 1977. This is a particularly horrible-sounding digitization of it, by the way.

James covered this song on several recordings. This one is perhaps my favorite. The way he builds tension in the progression is amazing

I adore this guy. Hey can play around the beat like no one else. And that voice.
The winds with wonder wist
As The Lord Almighty kissed
James Booker to play like this
& bequeath us eternal bliss.

Standing at his grave in Metarie, LA now. Thank you Mr. Booker.
RIP and in our hearts and sould forever and ever.
after years of listening to his talen, only conclusion i can draw is that booker was an alien.
Thank you GOD for James Carroll Booker!
rust2nite damn straight
Yep
Damned if I don't love most everything James does. Wish he'd gotten more recognition.
Thank god this is recorded.
No one would believe it if it wasn't.
This is why I love You Tube
È la migliore esecuzione che abbia sentito! Bravissimo!!!!!!!
Hai ragione veramente scoppiettante 🎉🎉🎉👍👍👍
James Booker is an amazing virtuoso, he is in a class of his own. Sad, he departed so soon.
GENIUS!!
My teacher is lending me this album this week - all I can say is WOW. This guy was the REAL DEAL. Gorgeous musicianship.
The best pianoplayer, full stop. No qualifications.
My god, I love this. No one played stride like James Booker. I could listen to this all night long.
Check Jan Baptiste, he is a great player piano player, reminds me of Booker at times
@@dananica607 Love his work!
I've stolen so many piano tricks from this guy and blown everyone I've met away. Booker is like a secret Ray Charles. His left hand is more rhythm than most players two.
First time I played a Booker album for my girlfriend she asked me, "who's playing the other piano?"
なんて楽しそうに演奏しているんでしょう。
音が弾んでる。
I love his improvisation. One of my favorite covers of this tune.
The best black, gay, one-eyed junkie piano genius New Orleans ever produced.
Steve Biddick Nice. You just copied what Dr. John said. Didn't even give him credit.
Erm - I think Booker himself said that. Not sure. I am not pretending that is my quote, however.
+Steve Biddick It was Dr John who said that, and he should know.
Steve Biddick damn straight. shame he died as a small artist. still alive in our heart's I know someone who remembers the genius of Manchester 77

Piano Genius. What more can one say?

Marvelous touch!
A Genious and a Piano Virtuoso!
Amazing and fantastic!
Music and rhythm are quite good! Words are not important!
There is. On his album Junco Partner. It's phenomenal!
This is some fucking mind blowing shit. They don't make jazz pianist's like this anymore, even Dr. John and Harry Connick Jr. who are both great, pale in comparison IMHO.
Both of them were schooled by Booker and it is really rare the the student becomes better than the teacher ;-)
With all due respect, this is rather pedestrian in comparison to Garner or Peterson or Tatum.

@@Jazzinthecountry yes, I think especially the one and only Garner is a genius not from this world.
Great stuff... No-one plays it like JCB!!
so much spirit in it
How can anyone not like this sexy shit?

I love it!
Fabulous!
Well, Connick, tries...but this is the epitome of this song...bouncy, so many extra notes, chords within chords, etc., etc.
Booker was hired by Connick’s father, New Orleans District Attorney Harry Connick, Sr., to teach his son piano. Connick as a teenager was a pall bearer at Booker’s funeral.
best piano version
Amazing piano style, its to play on piano
still love it!!
Great pianist
This guy's got more patience than a kindergarten teacher. Straight From the Heart of the Universe on parade.
The MASTER
Something about those old legends like Nina Simone and James Booker that made the spirit move when they got into it.
fucking legend
All rise.
Looks like "you got a friend in me" if I'm right on the name
The only thing missing is Marie Bryant . Fantastic performance
real genius!
genius!
man oh man
Aw!

Booker. For some reason I just want to call him mista jangles :P
Is there an album version of this?
Esistono trascrizioni di questo pezzo
Anyone know if what album I can find this specific recording? This is my favorite version of the song.

Thanks a lot. Yeah it does sound like shit, that's why I want the album so I don't have to keep coming back here.
beacuse he plays with horn players that want to play in Bb or Eb
Good grief...
