*Which one is good for your game?! Don’t make the wrong decision*
I’ve been using the cobra utility driving iron for the past 2 seasons and duno how many strokes I’ve cost myself. Sadly currently got it for sale don’t want to see it go but I know it’s not doing me any favours, thanks for confirming this 💪
Swing speed is key. So is landing or descent angle. Whatever club you use, to get the ball to stop on the green you need to gat a high enough peak or apex, together with high enough spin, to produce a landing angle of 40 degrees or higher. I am 83, have played over 62 years. I have learned conclusively that at my swing speed and that of your father, the longest iron you can hit that will have a landing angle of 40+ is one with a 31 degree loft. I play forged blades with traditional weak lofts, so that is my 31 degree 6 iron. But it could be a 7 iron in a set with stronger lofts. So in the past two years I have acquired a 21 degree 7W, 24 degree 9W, and 27 degree 11W to replace my 3, 4, and 5 irons. I also had gotten a set of hybrids, 23, 26 and 29 degrees. However, I find that I can produce steeper landing angles with the woods than with the hybrids. One reason, which you touch on, is that the center of mass tries to catch up to the shaft during the downswing. The COM of the fairway wood is, as you note, further back than that of the hybrid or iron. Thus in the downswing the COM pushing forward increases the dynamic loft higher than the static loft. So that 22 degree 7W you have has a dynamic loft of about 24 degrees. The 4 iron will have a dynamic left basically the same as it’s static 22 degree loft. In fact it will probably be lower than the static loft because irons are hit with forward shaft lean and downward angles of attack to gain compression. Thus the much lower trajectory and shallower landing angle of the iron. A player with high swing speed can get a 40 plus landing angle with a 4 iron because he hits the ball hard enough and with enough spin that it keeps rising as it continues going forward. There is no way a 75 mph or lower swing speed player can do that. Hybrids will be borderline. So consider these high lofted fairway woods. Powerful pros with huge swing speeds are. Dustin Johnson for example uses both a 7W and 9W. The reason is on holes with long carries over water or greenfront bunkers to small firm and fast greens, he and other pros want a trajectory like a 240 yard 8 or 9 iron that will come down steep and stop. On other courses like links with high winds to stay below and fairways the ball can run on to the green, they can elect their driving or 2 irons. And last but not least, Fred Couples has now replaced every iron in his bag longer than 7 with hybrids and fairway woods. Hits a 6 hybrid for 180 yds, 7 iron 170 yds. QED.
I am 69 yrs young and I use a Wilson D9 7 wood. It is one of my go to clubs. Depending on swing speed its very versatile for me. But I have never used a hybrid club yet. I quite useing top end irons about 28yrs ago
I had a club maker build me Snake Eyes woods 34° 31° 27° 23° 19°. I couldnt use the 19 I just had the ball hook every time. The rest I still use.
Your 100% right, Alex. I have a slow swing speed. i bought a ping g430 7 wood bloody he'll its the best club I've ever bought.
I've even got 210 yards on it, but average 170 yards. Great vid 👌
Enjoy it Love that you have made the change!
With respect, if there is forty yards difference between your average distance and your furthest, then there is a problem.
@zazhou only been playing golf for 5 months still learning 😀
@@daveinglis6235 enjoy the ride. It can become intoxicating!
My driver speed is around 80mph. Been gaming high lofted hybrids and fairway woods for over a decade. No brainier. Great video as always Alex 😊
21-22 degrees. That's my 160-170 club. I use it off tees on tight holes, or when the driver and 4 wood are being wayward. I use it on long par 3's. I use it into greens from outside the 150 stake. And I use it as a go to par 5 advancement club.
And yes, with my slow swing speed - and now that I'm 63, it's probably somewhere in the mid-high 70's for this club - I use a 7 wood. Have for many years.
I bought two hybrids..3 and 4 hi. Thinking of getting a 6..
I go between my Mizuno 243 set 4 iron and my Ping G425, hybrid @22 degrees Alex
The shaft in my hybrid is nearly 100 grammes and the head is set at 23 degrees and 3 degrees flat
I can hit it left to right /right to left
I can hit it high as you would ever need or head height stingers
I've got another @18 degrees
Same deal
Stingers or soft floaty shots again
The shaft is the difference maker for me
My 7 wood is used off the tee box without a tee, I average 200 yds off the deck. It is also used on longer approach shots.
Sorry, its. More than your game, its course and weather conditions. In the UK we rarely play target golf. Some holes. You can chase a ball in, other holes you fly it, some times its under the wind, some times you ride the wind. The course i play is play is extremely windy and in summer runs like a links course, winter plays like a parkland, so i put clubs in the bag for the conditions of the day. Also, you might want to play knockdown shots, i find that easier with an iron rather than a hybrid or wood, you might want to work the ball left and right, again i find that easier with an iron. Your video, makes sense in target golf, or standard conditions, our weather rarely affords those conditions.
I diagree. In NZ we play all conditions and it's often windy and the courses get very dry. Regardless if you're swinging under 80mph any iron from 6 up is a waste of time. Hybrids can hit knockdown shots.
need a trip to the range to try a few out
For sure!!!
When are we going to see a 4 ball with you and the other decent British golf-tubers? Love yor vidoes!
👀
I got myself a 4 iron not to long ago and the first time I used it I did think "well shit that's tiny" lol
after a few rounds its more than likely 100% mental thinking but I go 4 iron on the fairway (the odd occasion I find one) and hybrid in the first cut of rough and adjust my swing speed accordingly
Cheers Alex. This is something I’m struggling with at the moment. At the range I’m hitting my hybrid really well but take it to the course and I can’t hit it. But i got a driving iron I can hit anywhere.
Everything says I should find hybrid easier but for whatever reason that’s not me.
I am in the exact same boat as you. I wonder if there's also some sort of comfort or something to do with hitting off a mat that makes it easier.
Pidgeon-hole is an english language idiom, not necessarily an English term. Ive heard it my entire life in the US.
Play that 7 wood in a very windy area and I think you will have problems, I’d do the 4 hybrid to be safer.
Exactly perfect suggestion that why you have to think of the scenarios your using these golf clubs
It’s an area of my bag I need to address I have a 3W which I hit well, 3H (21 deg) that I’m struggling with and a 4i I hit ok. The 3H if hit well out hits the 4i. A 5W is probably the option I should be looking at.

I have kids that watch a lot of golf videos and I am tired of all these RUclipsrs starting to curse once they get more established on RUclips. Not a good example and done watching this.
It’s not an airport! You don’t have to announce your departure.
😂😂😂😂😂
This is unwatchable

I found it quite annoying as well, the results and outcome could be helpful for many golfers but the manic presentation and language wasn’t at all helpful
