I find it a tad annoying that people forget that some of the female companions from Classic Who were not just damsels in distress and could hold their own ground, sometimes even stand up to the Doctor, like Barbara, Jo, Sarah Jane, Liz Shaw, Leela, Romana, Ace, heck even Victoria could hold her own ground.
Over the last couple of years I've watched the classic series with Hartnell and his female companions are very resourceful and active in their characterisation. Of course, they are written from a different culture and time, but so are the men!
@@anthonybailey1966 there was a bit of a let down when saward took the rains of doctor who. I still think that jo grant, sarah jane and romana were peak female companion, before Ace ( Ace is a bit of a blueprint for modern companions)
How wonderful to hear him speak so highly of RTD and have such excitement for the role. I know it got so difficult for him but remembering how exciting it was is just great.
What a great archive interview, thanks for the upload! It's exciting to see how people were preparing for the new era of Doctor Who back then. And this also proves that DW has always been as they now say "woke". Chris and the reporter were so excited at the idea that the show was going to address current social issues, just like sci-fi often does. People who now moan abut "wokeness" should watch this. But who am I kidding, they don't care about Doctor Who in the first place, they just love complaining.
No problem at all. What I don’t understand, if people don’t enjoy it and don’t like what they are doing then why keep watching. Just making yourself miserable and upset others.
@@Mr.DWHO96 True but I've never understood the other side of snotty supercilious fans who proclaim how much more ''enlightened'' they are for blindly accepting any old tosh.
Very telling that he views the writing as making the Doctor as much as the actor themselves. Makes me feel bad for the crap Jodie had to work with smh.
To be honest, I think some people were going to dislike Jodie's era regardless of the quality of the writing. Personally, I really enjoyed her era and found it really fun.
@@jaydee4697 While that's true, the overall quality of Jodie's era was the worst the show has been in a long time (and that's coming off of Capaldi's very hit and miss era).
@@MoonstruckMelody It sucks because sometimes you can see elements of quality shining through in her episodes (the Dalek episodes especially), so you can see how good it could've been
@@MoonstruckMelody Again, that's your opinion. Personally, I found Jodie's era to be fun and exciting; it even got me into watching Classic Who, for which I'll always be grateful. Just because something it's your cup of tea, that doesn't mean it's bad.
I like how he goes on about the writing but he's said he's a fan of the 13th doctor lol Good writing? 13th doctor? Couldn't get any further apart. Chibnall was trash
To be fair, it's possible to be a fan of the Thirteenth Doctor and not a fan of the writing. Eccleston seems to like Whittaker in particular, which is admirable.
Or - and I'm guessing this will be a hard concept for you to grasp, so I'll try and keep it as very simple as possible - he just has a different opinion. See, I get that. And to that I say, good for you!! Enjoy what you enjoy and let other people do the same. 🤗
That's your opinion, mate. Everyone's got their own favourite eras on the show, and not every era is going to appeal to every fan. Your dislike of her era doesn't mean Jodie's era was terrible; it just means it wasn't your cup of tea.
Hate to break it to you, but Doctor Who's always been "woke" ESPECIALLY during the 2000s era. You know Russell T. Davies is Gay, right? (in fact he's not just Gay, he's *Welsh!* 🏴 Of course his writing is political) Not to mention...you ALSO happen to know who the *Daleks* were based on, right? Like seriously I don't think you can make a LESS subtle metaphor than the Daleks.
Not to be a contrarian but jodie isn't to be blamed, the blame lies solely at chris chibnall's feet for his atrocities of a script. I really miss Russel T Davies!
@@pikachucetthesecond4296 Exactly. I mean, they just talked about it in this video, how the show was going to address social issues like other sci-fi and they were all excited about it.

Quite right.....some people the Doctor's companions were all screamers who were helpless, but it was actually rarely the case!
Leela and Ace are great. Someone should do a Big Finish story with those two.

Doesn't this just sum up the character perfectly?
2004: "I came to Dr Who because of Russell T Davis"
2024: "I'll come back if you sack Russel T Davis"
Crazy how it ended like this
When this interview broadcast, he'd already either finished filming or had done most of it. His professionalism in promoting the brand is unparalleled

Hmm neither did I. That’s interesting 🤔
He also wrote Kafka: The Musical, a really surreal piece they released as a radio drama, starring David Tennant as Franz Kafka. Brilliant stuff.
My favorite Doctor.
i hope Eccleston return in a future minisode
i counted, paul mcgann was on screen for 3 frames in that opening montage
