I’ve recently bought a XL. Your videos are very educational for me as a newbie. I’d suggest using some aluminum free baking powder on the wings before cooking. It’ll help crisp up the wings. Be careful to read the ingredient list on baking powder!
I have the original Foodi Grill. I have found cooking at higher temp and less time give a crispier skin without drying out the meat. Get the 10 lb bag of Kirkland brand of chicken wings for Costco and cook frozen, no salt or seasoning straight from freezer to grill, cook at 450 degrees @ 17 mins. Cooking at higher temp will cause the grill to smoke more. I also like cubed pork belly that has been seasoned with a cajun mix
I have the original foodie grill. I love it. I noticed the XL splatter grill is much smaller than the original. Seems like Ninja cut orders on the XL. The coils on top of the XL have to be smaller than the original too. I am not surprised the original won the contest.
What I tell people is, if you’re going to use the grill more than anything else, then get the XL. But if you use all of the other features more, then get the original.
Good video! I am thinking about the ninja grill air fryer and not sure if I should go 4 and 1 or 5 in 1 or XL do you have an opinion about which is best. Thanks
Thanks for doing and sharing this test! I have been looking into the Ninja Foodi to buy soon and now I know the original is probably the better choice. I don't need a big grill for just me and my husband so you just helped me make my decision. Thank you!
Great Video,i did notice that original ninja grill wings were darker, more cooked,so because of that and other factors im still going to continue with the original Foodi Grill..like they say why fix something that isnt broken, anyway bug fan of your straight to the point videos, and digging your humor that sneaks in there at times.
I tried wings in the XL air fryer but only did a single layer and I found they smoked a lot and had to quit. Did you get much smoke? Also, I wonder if doing a pre max heat would help like when you did your butterflied whole chicken.
Not sure how I missed this! I LOVE me some Wings. These look awesome! If anybody orders Uncle Steve's Shake on line and mentions this video, I'll throw in a free gift!!!!!
So glad I found your channel on home page. Best ninja foodi grill video I've seen. You have finally showed me that I can cook enough food with it. Thanks a million. Can't wait to watch your other videos.
CJ the XL has a smaller heating element surface what affect have you found this has on cooking? I note that you say the XL did not brown the wings as much, do you think because it has a smaller heating element than the original caused that?
I just seen two of your videos. Love your feed. I would also like to know where you get your trays yiur seasoning your meats on? I may also get one of these handy knives. 👌
CJ, I’m thinking since they went more rectangular with the XL, maybe ninja should have given it a larger heating element or two smaller ones side by side, or even 2 horizontal quartz heat elements. Either way the new XL is probably better than most of the competitors on the store shelves. Last month I bought ANOTHER ninja foodi grill just to keep in the box new( that’s how much I like it), I think I’m gonna take that extra one back and get the XL. Thanks for the video👍🏾.
Omg some of those in opening theme commercial look amazing. The bubbling cheese, etc. I'm not a paella person, but that looked beautiful. Wings 😋 mmm yumm ! I love crispy wings.
I've been told that despite the XL being shallower, the actual distance to the heating element's protective rack up top is the same in both. It seems, when looking at them in the video, that there is something to it. Can someone verify?
Thanks CJ for the quick review /comparison of the 2 grills doing chicken wings. I'm very surprised that the bigger one couldn't keep up with the older version. I'm a sucker for very crispy wings so the new one is a fail. I don't grill much in mine, that's what my xl kamado is for 😏. I may just get a second original to double the volume.... Again thanks for the great review. Too bad we didn't get to see you taste it though!
I recently bought the foodi grill not the XL. I cleaned it set it up and I get an E2 on the display screen 😭😢 but thanks for letting me know how many wings I can cook! I was definitely curious 🧐
Wait... so 40 vs 41 wings?? The XL got 1 extra wing and cooking times were the same? Also the OG Ninja cooked it better bc the space was smaller? So why would somebody go with the XL? Great vid... first time watching. Thanks!
The XL has the exact same heating setup as the original, but is larger so most people say it doesn't heat as well. The big benefit of the XL is the larger cook space for gatherings. If you need to get 5 or 6 steaks or something equivalent it really helps.
@@JohnVanderbeck exactly. I have a small family so I guess I only need the original. Plus I’m not having gatherings in my house anymore due to covid. 🤣😂
@@JohnVanderbeck We just bought the XL and I did cause of the Smart cook system and I got it at a great price. I didn't need the XL just for me and my husband but I wanted the smart cook features.
I think if you're just sticking to grilling, the shallowness of the XL doesn't matter. But for air frying, you only fit one more wing in, and the same crispness wasn't there. I think I'll stick to the original, I feel there's more versatility. Thanks for the demo!
@@CookingWithCJ cool...Amazon just put the XL on sale for $199. I believe that's the same price as the original...guess I'll be getting the XL. Thanks dude!
Thanks, CJ. I have a freezer full of wings. I prepped several dozen with marinades and vacuum sealed them. I went to put them in the freezer and found 2 bags of Flats, from Kroger. We'll be in wing heaven. I'll use both grills and everyone can have wings at the same time. 😃
Thanks for doing this comparison CJ! I only got the Foodi Grill last month, but so far it is absolutely outstanding. Maybe down the road I’ll look to upgrade to the larger one, but for me, the regular grill is great so far. I am going to order some of that Uncle Steve’s seasoning! 😃
I like crispy also but you put approximately same number of wings in a deeper fryer which gave the wings better cook. The XL has less depth in the tray and probably with fewer wings would have cooked as good or better than the older model! Now I got to cook some wings in my XL you made me hungry! Liked and subscribed!
Loving your videos and your Facebook page!! I have both grills. Just got the XL. Just hubby and me though. 🤣🤣 going to make a ribeye tonight for us on the XL. ♥️
Thank you for your great comparison! I am looking to buy a Ninja grill and your review helps to make my decision. Personally, I prefer to clean and inspect chicken wings but dry well with paper towels before cook.
Alright. C.J. I'm debating upgrading to the Ninja XL. this video will make the decision for me, since wings are my obsession. Alright. about to hit play. Wow. 40 wings at a time. I usually wouldn't do any more than 12-15 at a time. Now I know! load up and up the cook time and stir frequently.
Great job CJ. It looks like the original Ninja did a better job. Distorted view on the video because it looked like the XL had twice as many wings in it and didn't do as good of a job air frying. I'm glad you did the comparison and counted them out. Surprised me, for sure!
Thanks! Excellent battle, and like your honest review. The XL seems to offer more size for grilling flat stuff-like steaks, burgers. But for volume AF about the same. The coil on the older grill looks a little larger so I think that may be a factor. Regardless, I am sure both make some great food.
I may be wrong, but it seems that what was gained by cooking surface was lost in thickness of grill. at this point I will stay I will stay with original. I haved loved it. I will keep watching to see if I can see the advantages.
Thanks for the video. I’ve been thinking of purchasing one of the grills, but undecided on which one of these two, I have read a review where the original grill seemed to cook hotter and better than the xl. Your video coincided with that review, therefore why spend the extra money for the xl?
Thanks for doing these videos on the XL, I've been waiting for the wings one. So surprised though that you got roughly the same amount in each. Did not see that coming.
I have 3 questions for you that i hope you can take the time to answer: 1) if this is a no flip machine, why do we have to flip the food? 2) how do you know whether you should use roast, grill, bake, air crisp etc for your food? 3) i just put avocado oil on my pork chops and am grilling them just like you did. Why is my grill smoking out of the sides?
1- I prefer to flip to get grill marks on both sides. It helps with my pix and videos. 2- just preference. Air crisp is like air frying. Grill is well grilling, using the grill plate. Roast and bake are pretty similar. 3- no clue, mine doesn’t smoke at all. If it keeps happening, reach out to Nina.
I think both grill were overloaded. The OG is very good, the XL should have been deeper and bigger to be honest, I told Ninja this when I did the product testing.
Yes I overloaded them on purpose. And said I don’t recommend putting so many wings in at once. I agree it could have been deeper, but it really seems like this was geared towards the grillers. Thanks for watching.
I would do bump heat up to 500 as soon as they were thawed so they sear on the outside then once they're seared turn temp down till they're at temperature
The ninja foodi xl grill fryer basket is a flawed design, they didn't get a crispy because the chickens were frying in its own wet fat, take a look at the basket, the are 4 grooves that collect liquid, its not flat but it should be
I know you’ve said that Roast & Bake are pretty much the same thing but I want to experiment to see if I can tell a difference. I was wondering if you have ever air fried a steak or a burger? I’ve been using the grill function because I don’t want to ruin the beef but I wanted to see your opinion on the matter.
Hehe CJ!....nice comparison test just send me the all the flaps and I'll compare which one came out more crispy. LMAO 🤣 🤣 ...Take care my brother. Cheers!
