Wow thanks! I've been using Illustrator for almost 25 years and didn't know about the target layer thing. That really is a fantastic way to have intersecting lines with multiple strokes blend together.
Fantastic tutorial! 👍 Nice to find some real tutorials instead of supposed tutorials that are just 'Speed Art' with no narration or instruction whatsoever. I've only just discovered your channel and I like what I've seen so far, so have subscribed. I look forward to watching more. Love the British accent, too!
Hey there! Really love this video tutorial, thank you so much! This will help me tremendously with a university project. I am trying to figure out though - how do I change the width of a single road? When I check the appearances after selecting one road, it does not show the same graphic style and instead shows that there is no fill, no stroke at all. If I mess with these in a similar fashion to the video, they will not blend together anymore and this line with have a stoke outline that interferes with the others. Can send over screenshots if that is helpful. Thanks :)
Is there a way to add one thicker width road and then connect a thinner road that connects with the same stroke blending in without a cut or line appearing?
Excellent! Quite easy and it takes little time for drawing roads! TFS! This is for roads of the same width, but I wonder how to draw roads with multiple stroke widths, e.g for large roads connecting with small roads? Pls help. Thanks!
ninja please help. everything is ok, except for one thing. My roads / ways are closed not open.the result is that the roads are not connected but closed-isolated rectangles. Why?where did I make a mistake?
I've got no idea what you're doing/explaining from 3:54 through 4:10. Could you please explain what that was all about? I'm not getting the same results on my end, and the description of what you're doing there isn't helping me figure it out...
i try to do as your instruction but simple those link not snap and show complete result from your video. did you make point snap or myillustrator setup was wrong?
Hi Tony, a little snag I'm hoping there is a simple answer to... What if I want 2 main roads to be a different colour or wider? Can't seem to wrk out how to change individual roads yet still have them intersecting with others. Any ideas? Thanks for all you do :)
Hey. Thanks for the kind words and there is a solution to this that is covered in my Lynda/LinkedIn course on "Drawing simplified Maps in Illustrator" where you'll discover a really powerful technique. While the whole course covers a lot more, this is such an important technique that I made the associated movie free for all: bit.ly/2SgVNLx Enjoy!
Hello! This tutorial helped me a lot. I have a question though. Is there a possibility that the roads endings to be ...open and not closed by the black stroke?
Yes simply don’t use the effects as shown here. Instead just increase the points of the stroke below. Example: Stroke #1 (Yellow or white) points = 30 Stroke #2 (black) points = 32 or so. Hope it helped
Thank you, glad you've enjoyed it. Yes, you can use several graphic styles, as well as using combined graphic styles to manage your different roads. My personal preference is most often to keep everything on separate layers-I just think it's easier to deal with. You may need to make use of some opacity masks on the layers though-but it's still easier than managing lots of expanded shapes!
Hey. I'm not 100% sure what's going on but it sounds like you have a second instance of the style running on an object, rather than the layer. What may interest you is that I've just published the ULTIMATE technique for doing this that is much easier, faster and way more flexible-take a look at it here: ruclips.net/video/tKTxLcpW8vA/видео.html
Hi, When I apply the graphic style, I do not get lines that blend/mix or whatever you call it but lines that remain independent and come above or overlap one another. I do not find out what I did wrong.
Hey Pauline! I think you need to target the layer-just have another look at the video and watch that step, it's normally what's gone wrong, there. Hope that helps. :)
Hey. With the Selection Tool active, hit RETURN on your keyboard-if I remember correctly though I did that by mistake in this movie, and meant to get the Average Command. :D
Hey there. A common mistake with this technique is to select all, and then try the effect-what you need to do is target the layer, then everything should work just fine. :)
Thanks for the video. How do you change the thickness of a single road? I'm finding the graphic style is applied to the whole layer and so I can't create any other line or graphic style within that layer that will connect up with the other roads. Thanks
Hey Chris! You're welcome and thanks for commenting. There is another method that I use, which allows for varying widths of road, but it's not due to go on here at the moment. It will be in my new maps title coming soon on Lynda.com and LinkedIn Learning, if you have access to either of those? If you follow my Facebook page (facebook.com/thedesignninja) you'll see the announcement for when that goes live. :)
I followed all of your moves yet my roads are huge and going on top of another. They keep remaining wide, stroke just literally changes stroke thickness and fill does literally nothing, not like in your video. Wasted an 1 hour and a half on this to find out it isn't working as it should. Or even if it does, my roads doesn't connect anymore and I don't understand why. I need my map done by tomorrow noon. x.x
Well done, but I think you may find the usage of that is somewhat limited! How would you cope if someone asked for the file at a large size like five feet wide at 300ppi… ?
Hey Amjad-can you send me a link to an image similar to that you'd like to draw? I found a couple of things, one from the University of Leeds, and another on a RUclips video: Folding, faulting and geological maps (but this isn't in Illustrator. If you can send me a link, I'll do my best to see if I can help. :)
Hey Aw, sorry-but let's see if we can fix it, together. Follow the steps through carefully, again. Make sure that when you apply the style, you have the layer targeted (look closely to make sure you're hitting the icon). Also, switch out to outline mode (Cmd-Y on a mac, Ctrl-Y on PC) and look at the actual vector lines. Don't be disheartened! Give it another go-if you're still having trouble, then comment again and I'll get back to you as soon as I can! It's also sometimes easier to tweet me @tonyhamer as I may see that faster. Good luck!
I'm pretty sure I'm clicking the layer target button as the box icon appears next to it. If this is of any use; when I click the target button it highlights all the anchors and the surrounding box instead of in yours where it has a box around it, I'm using the same selection tool at that stage. That probably isn't very interesting as that's probably just down to variations in the versions we're using. As you can tell, I'm quite the beginner when it comes to illustrator.
You caught me just before I turned-in for the night (sleep time)! That sounds correct. Once you've targeted the layer, go to the appearance panel, and make sure it says "Layer" at the top; if it does, you are doing everything correctly. try just one more time, following each step and if that doesn't work, please put your file somewhere that I can see it, like on DropBox or similar. I would have said Creative Cloud, but I'm guessing that you're not on CC yet-however this tutorial would work if you traveled back in time ten years! Also, don't worry about being a beginner-everyone has to start somewhere, and it's great that you're trying to learn good solid skills, here. I won't be able to get back to you until tomorrow, but let me know how you get on. :)
Hey. I can see the problem, from the file preview alone-plus your description: you have added a white fill, and what you need to do is add another stroke instance, not a fill. Try the tutorial again, slowly and it should be fine. :)
Wow thanks! I've been using Illustrator for almost 25 years and didn't know about the target layer thing. That really is a fantastic way to have intersecting lines with multiple strokes blend together.
There's always more to learn!
all 4 tutorials about maps are great, I learn some useful tips from each , thanks !

Hi. I'm having difficulty trying to create streets. Instead of merging together, the lines look like they're overlapping each other.
same goes me
You need to add the style to the layer-follow the tutorial slowly, step-by-step and you should see where it's going wrong. Good luck! :)
Please see the answer above and hopefully you'll fix it, too. :)
Thank you for this tutorial
Cool video! But I have a problem with path intersection, roads just lay on each other. How to fix it?
Thanks! Do you mean roads that are crossing over each other?
How should I go about adding color to my map that I have just created?

is the process same for photoshop or is it different ? btw i loved your work !
Thank you! The process is completely different in Photoshop but that may be a worthwhile tutorial… I'll add it to the list! 😊
wow this is awesome - thank you
Thank you! You're most welcome. :)

Thank you times a million. Very easy to follow.
Thanks, Alison! There's more mapping coming along later today.

Thanks, Kennedy! I'll do my best! :)
How do you add/edit roundabouts?
What a great question, Anoop-and it'll make a great video-stay tuned.

I have access to Lynda.com and would like to take some of your tutorials. How can i find you on there?
Hey Chiara! I'm easy to find: lynda.com/tonyharmer. Let me know what you're learning! :)
Great! Thank You!
You're welcome, Jan!
Why mine when the line crossed the offset line go on top of each other and looks like a flyover instead of crossing?

I need help. I tried this yesterday and it work well. All the road is joining up. But today i tried again and none of it joining up.
Hey there. A common mistake with this technique is to select all, and then try the effect-what you need to do is target the layer, then everything should work just fine. :)
