Rugby Referee Analysis: Ben O'Keeffe | Springboks vs Australia 2023

  • I'll start by saying that overall I thought the officiating was good. In general I think Ben O'Keeffe is a good ref, and what I like the most about him is the fact that he is one of the very refs that will publicly admit if he made a mistake and then he'll discuss his decision making in making that mistake. He's not like most refs, who hide behind closed doors and play the whole "refs are human" excuse card. Now, Ben did have a shocker in the Super Rugby final, I don't think anybody can deny that, but he got attacked on social media by fans and they attacked him with personal stuff. I'm all for if he criticizing a ref for his officiating that happened on the field, but that gives nobody the right to attack a ref on his personal life, people who do that are stupid, there's no other way to say it. I just wanted to make that clear because it's childish and stupid to attack a ref on social media with stuff that is absolutely nothing related to his performance. If you want to criticize the ref, keep your criticism about his officiating.
No that I got that out of the way, in this game my issues were more with the AR's at scrum time and then the TMO also missed a few stuff. There was a few mistakes from Ben O'Keeffe himself, but that's going to happen in rugby. The first part I show some foul play from Marika Koroibete, who made 2 questionable tackles. Now he has shown he has a history of this where he does not use arms and just dives shoulder first into a ball carrier. 2 of them were not even checked by the TMO, then on the 2nd one as well, we have Willie le Roux going into the face of the ref and trying to milk a yellow card from the ref. Now I do think the tackle should be checked, but the way Willie le Roux acted there was unacceptable, and also has a history of this. This is classic Johny Sexton behaviors where a player is milking the situation. I hate that and feel like it should be stopped. I honestly wouldn't mind if the penalty got overturned and Willie got penalized. Not to mention the SA Broadcaster who is trying to show the replay multiple times without the ref going to the TMO, which indicates they're trying to force the ref to use the TMO. Which is another thing I hate, the broadcaster should not play the role of TMO, the TMO should check it on his own.
Then there also was a tackle by Pieter Steph du Toit, when I saw it life I thought it was going to be checked by the TMO because PSDT just dived into the head of a ball carrier with his shoulder. It was reckless. This happened fast, so I can understand the ref missing it, but the TMO should help him there.
Then there were the scrums that I thought was poorly handled by Ben as well as his AR's. But mostly his AR's as in most cases he was on the other side of the scrum where it collapsed, and the AR had clear vision of it, but never told him. Which led to scrums being reset, that should've been penalties to SA. I also wasn't a fan of Ben not rewarding SA for a dominant scrum. He was inconsistent the whole time at scrum. He keeps telling SA to use the ball, when the scrum was collapsed by Australia before the ball was available. Then on other cases he'll reward the penalty. It was just inconsistent at scrum time.
But like I said, if we look at the full game overall, I think he had a good game. But was not a fan of the AR's, who were - Paul Williams (NZR), Andrea Piardi (FIR), as well as the TMO who was, Brendon Pickerill (NZR).
Lastly, I would also like to thank VHA Accounting Solutions for their partnership during this 2023 Rugby Championship. This video was sponsored by them. We look forward to a great partnership during this Rugby Championship

What makes Ben O'Keefe such a great referee is his rapport with the players. Even after Willie le Roux's somewhat over-enthusiastic advice, he simply said: "thank you, Willie" and carried on. He is also not trigger-happy with handing out cards. Top referee.

As a ref you cannot catch each and every incident in the game, not humanly possible. You check the offside line and miss the shoulder, only one pair of eyes out there in the park. Thought the referee had a great game, used his assistant referees and the TMO very well. One of the better refereed games I have seen for a while. I liked his calm deliberate approach. I hate penalty tries but both were probably deserved.

I have been enjoying and learning a lot from your Ref. and player analysis: Great stuff.
I am not so sure I agree with a few of your highlights here: in the replays of Aus. 12 on Moodie: Aus 12 is an arriving player after moodie tackled fairly by Aus 11. Aus 12 is never off his feet and to me the contact is on the light side and not definitive of head/neck play. I agree completely about Willie trying to milk it.
in that line-out knock-on regather: I am not sure its really clear that Bongi "influences/touches" that ball, and I would be "rewarding" if one can say that - the regather. ( what I really mean is its a clear knock-on if its ball to turf) but if it's regathered I reckon play on.
Now: when Kitsoff Binds ( and he does bind) onto our 6 : All are on their feet and he is also first guy arriving: to me it's briefly a bound maul and If his bind don't change or drop hes NOT going to be off side. There's no completed tackle and On they go. So? no obstruction to me.
I guess on balance I think some of these plays were "marginal" and within referees call discretion?
Is it fair to say there is the Letter of the Law but also the spirit of the game?

I have actually seen refs calling for the scrumhalf to play the ball at the back of the scrum. However as far as I am aware, there is no rule that says that if it is available, the scrumhalf must play it - especially not at the command of the ref! A team should be able to decide if they want to keep it in the scrum. If the scrum has collapsed in the meantime, it is the ref's job to decide what caused it and if a team should be penalised, but not to just order the team to play the ball.

  • @JMz685

Marika Koroibete’s fist tackle was good. You’re supposed to use your shoulder when you tackle, and his arm comes around to wrap anyway.
He just strong that the player bounces away before he can wrap. Honestly if that isn’t a legitimate tackle then I don’t know whats happening to rugby. Marika has got natural strength 💪🇫🇯

The ref was fine. Non-penalizing of scrums, though. is counterproductive and unfair.
    (a) it incentivizes further intentional collapses, which is an injury risk.
    (b) it neutralizes any benefit the dominant scum would have had because the defending looses are no longer backpedaling. In fact, they invariably unbind, separate from the collapsed scrum (in which they otherwise have been pushing desperately) being symbiotically bound by the merest of touches. Those flankers are then in reality offsides instead of 5 meters back.

See @ 5 minutes in. Koch had Slipper's head buried in the turf looking back through his legs. An extremely dangerous position to be in. And when a neck breaks, as it will against these mutant South Africans, it will be the referee's fault for "trying to let the game flow" and not rewarding dominance and not protecting the weak.

If every second gets monitored then we will soon play a 100min game which stops momentum play from the team dominating their strategy in real time instead waiting for a tmo talking to a ref he blows game dead "players" waterboys coming on during that period giving coach instructions changing flow what you see in NFL where there is always communication and strategy at play . Correct me if im wrong but didn't the rules recently change regarding non straight lineout, ref only penalises if the opposition contest, if they dont jump then play continues?
I thought ref had a great game but was let down by AR not communicating scrum collapse and TMO who uses hawkeye with 10 second delay is meant to pick up dangerous play the ref misses so dont understand how Aus 11 or SA 7 werent picked up by tmo and referred to the ref.
There was one other incident I noticed which was when SA no 9 attemps to play ball at back of a ruck but is pulled into ruck by Aus player and taken off his feet, 2nd AUS player then comes through and picks up ball from SA side of ruck and makes a break as deemed ball is out of ruck after scrumhalf is taken out, thus stopping a significant attack opportunity for SA, however I thought it was illegal to grab/interfere with scrumhalf at back of ruck.

Well then World Rugby should just remove scrums as a whole. If they don't see it as part of the game, it needs to be removed. But why have a dominant scrum and focus on developing world class props, if you're never getting rewarded for it? And also do we remove lineouts and mauls as well? Where does it stop?
Rugby is a game where you can win with different playstyles, that's what makes it great. I don't find the logic in trying to remove certain aspects of the game because a team is dominant in it. I mean can SA advocate for removing offloads in rugby? that way we remove something where NZ is good at?

it's hard to milk penalties in other parts of the game.
You can't do it at line outs. The referee's actively deter it in rucks (holding opposite players in bad positions). You can't dummy from the base of the scrum, ruck or maul to draw an offside penalty either. I can't think of another part of the game where it can be done.
As a paying punter it's just plain boring to see a team milk penalties rather than play the game.
Moving the ball about is what the game is all about. Off loading, passing is creative sure there are different ways to play and to win. I'm just saying milking penalties is a terribly boring way to do it.
Picture the scene. An attacking side gets a scrum right in front of the posts on the 22m line. All the backs are lined up to the left except the right wing. The back row have some moves that could exploit the area just to the right of the scrum. Clock is ticking down. The scores are close. The crowd expectant This could be it!
The ball comes in (crookedly) it's held at the number 8s feet. What is going to happen next?
