- Hello Folks on this RUclips Thang! I hope you are having a fun-filled day today!
It’s time. Today I want to look at the first novel in the Elric series by Michael Moorcock, “Elric of Melniboné” written in 1970. The first story in the series was written in 1961 (“The Dreaming City”). But this is the first proper novel, and it sets the world. In this book, we’ll see how Elric gets the famous sword Stormbringer and it will set the stage for everything to follow.
This is the multiverse of Moorcock’s creation, where on each plane of existence there exists a great conflict between Law and Chaos. The Eternal Champion serves as the avatar of that battle and the balance that must exist therein. On this plane, Elric is created as the anti-Conan and must take on the role of the Eternal Champion.
Moorcock’s works are heavily influential on modern fantasy, and can be seen in massive amount in places like the Game Workshop works such as Warhammer and Warhammer 40k, or Gary Gygax’s D&D. I consider this series of books to be the most influential of Moorcock’s works. It’s a solid place to move to after the Hawkmoon series we looked at previously.
Want to check out my own Appendix N where Moorcock notches my top spot for most influential work in my own life? Here you go! • My Appendix N
Have you read Elric of Melniboné or other stories in the Eternal Champion series? What did you think of it? Did you agree with my video? Anything in the video or the story that you’d like to discuss? Sure; let’s chat about it!
Did you enjoy this video? Glad to hear it! Are you a person who enjoys finding these older books? Then why not hit that lil’ ol’ subscribe button and let's get your fix of reviews of older fantasy, science fiction, forgotten classics? Thanks again for watching and reading!!!
So this is my third video into the binge! I am such a literary nerd.
No judgment!
I was introduced to Morecock back in y2k by a painter who would come to my pub to eat and talk literature and Counter Strike. So I read everything I could and came to love the sickly and sad anti hero
Glad you enjoyed it!
Why are there no electronic editions available?
Good question, no clue!
You feeling all right man?
So far!
@@theworstthingaboutnewbooks6006 I should have explained what I meant - it sounded like you maybe had the sniffles. Glad you're well lol. Big fan of Elric
@@tombombaddie Me too! Elric rules. Literally!
Elric is probably my favorite series by Moorcock. Which one would you say is yours?
I love them all, but Hawkmoon's my fav.
@@theworstthingaboutnewbooks6006 I just bought the collected Runestaff novels, and so far they are a close second!
@@Nethescurial95 Glad you like them!
No love for Corum or Erekose?.
Dude, you almost said H.P. Lovecraft. Not judging. I can see the connection. When It comes to weird authors of the mid 20th century, for me, we're talking Lovecraft, Moorcock and Herbert.
Edit: well, obviously... Lovecraft, early 20th century. (I'm dense).
Definitely!
A friend of mine introduced me to Michael Moorcock's Elric of Melnibone books. I thought they were great. But like all series, the later books were less great when compared to the earlier works.
You have a good friend!
Melnibone’ is pronounced Mel-ni-bo-nay
