    "The Sonata for Violoncello and Piano No. 1 in E Minor, Op. 38 (begun in 1862), is the first chamber music work for the young Johannes Brahms, in which his own instrument - the piano - engages in dialogue with an equal partner. It is the first of a rather limited series of his sonatas for piano and second instrument. (...)"
