The invention of the microscope is credited to Zacharias Janssen, a Dutch spectacle maker, in 1590. He is believed to have created the first compound microscope, which uses two lenses to magnify objects.
However, it was Antonie van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723), also a Dutch scientist, who is considered the "Father of Microbiology" for his pioneering work in using the microscope to study microorganisms and cells. He discovered many microscopic organisms, including bacteria, yeast, and protists, and his work laid the foundation for the field of microbiology.
So, to summarize:
- Zacharias Janssen (1590): Invented the first compound microscope
- Antonie van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723): Made significant discoveries using the microscope and is considered the "Father of Microbiology
