Thank you Prof. Ashok Jhunjhunwala !
    Regarding Myth 1
For occasional long distance drives - we dont have swapping stations and range extender vehicles yet!
We feel DC fast charging is the best bet for long distance driving.
Myth2 - Go out with someone who goes out with an EV??? :)
One of the most ridiculous thing we have ever heard!

electric Vehicles are for city drive not long range. For long distance hire petrol vehicle for a day or two. Or use Bus/train
      Or use hybrid vehicles.
swapping will not work except for Large transport company.
      Its Foolish myth

Why India is not introducing more electric cars like China? How many electric cars ? , one from Mahindra and other from Tata with very little range and no showrooms displays these electric vehicles. Our government is not very serious on electric mobility and pollution. They are getting good revenue from petrol & Diesel Taxes . This will continue for another 20 years

Hardly anyone in Chennai (where I live) drives more than 50 kms a day. At 10 kms for a liter of petrol they will consume about 3 liters of petrol costing Rs 220/-per day on average. When you need to go the airport or just beyond from a popular suburb like Anna Nagar it is about 45 Kms (both ways). If you use it to go to your office it is a simple matter to recharge the battery once you are in your office parking lot. It works on domestic electric supply so wiring up is a simple matter. Right now it is impossible to use a battery powered car like the Mahindra E2O to travel from Chennai to Bangalore but it is perfect for going to work in the city. Eventually these small cars will improve its batteries storage and you could go distances of over 350 Kms on a single charge.

Currently the auto giants have enough stock that could go on for a year even if they halt production. They will keep on producing till we keep buying. So whenever you go to their showrooms ask for electric vehicle and launch date at least to make them aware that ppl are now demanding evs and shift towards evs is inevitable.

As a middle class man with a stable job, I see the value for money when I buy a product. If I have the option to choose between a petrol and a diesel car, then four factors will come to my mind.
    1)Cost differences
2)Service and maintenance cost including accident repairs
    3)Resale Value
4)Reliability - I do not mean the efficiency to overtake or acceleration from 0 to 100 in 5 seconds. By this, I mean the ease of access to a mechanic when my car gets jammed in the middle of a highway. It's the availability of fuel pumps every few kilometers.
By taking the same factors to compare EV and oil based cars, I do not think EV will be my option.
Secondly, there is a big debate between Lithium batteries and Hydrogen powered cells. We gotta clear this first before opting for an EV.
    Now, EV can make

    • @pluginIndia

How many times a month do you go on long distance drives > 250 km on your highway?
95% of time people drive in and around city.
And for them EVs can help.
There is no debate regarding hydrogen and EVs.
We have practical EVs on the road road now. Show us any hydrogen vehicle in the market.
Elon musk calls hydrogen fuel cells - fools cells.
The auto industry talks bout H2 so they delay working on EV’s and continue selling ICE cars.

I agree with the professor. India in fact have no other option. In India people normally use vehicle for short distances only, less than 60 km daily. And in India people prefer to use private vehicle if they can afford (or ill afford). Electric vehicles are ideal to meet this requirement. When once a while they want to go for a long drive, they can hire a cab or take a car on rent. We have to make us immune to fossil oil arm twisting, and free our land from pollution.

    $44k long range ( 75 Kwh, 500 Km/full charge) Tesla Model 3 = ~ 32 Lakh.
Comparably Honda Accord Hybrid costs 37 Lakh
Benz C class costs 40+ Lakh.
Operating cost for 10 years for reasonably heavy car user (15000 Km/year) = 4 Lakh (include charging, regular maintenance, tire and break pad changes).
In company of the size of Tesla can open an assembly center in India (along with battery manufacturing) , the production cost can come down significantly and we can see a good electric car with 350Km/charge (50 Kwh battery) range well below 20 Lakh.
When people who can afford semi-luxury/luxury cars start adopting to EV, it will open up market for manufacturer and will drive down the adaptation costs, making Electric cars main stream in no time.

  • @rash9505
    @rash9505 6 лет назад

    What a nice video!
About range: by jumping from one Fastcharger to another, every range is possible. Swapping seems to be nice, but in fact the battery type, structure and size are changing fast. In past, it was lead acid or NiMh. Today it's LiFePo4, tomorrow it's maybe LTO. That means the swapping station has to store many different battery types which is a costly thing. Better to build fastchargers: they are cheaper, doesn't require much space and can be adapted to new technology's.
Recycling: please make a video about it!!!

Sir , if at all govt or companies build infra for charging it will be a big mess of traffic jam in road side. Also how we can swap the batteries for buses and trucks for long haul. I am not against of EV but if we spend the sane money to develope 0 emission IC we will save more money, energy and time. Yes our import cost will increase but even though for Lithium ion we have to import, import costs can be reduced by doing ease of bussiness with oil supplying countries.

Replaced my Honda Aviator (petrol) with Hero Photon+ (uses LPG as final source of energy - my area power plant uses LPG) so I am emitting just CO2 + H2O in the end (instead of noxious and cancer causing petrol fumes). NOW, MOST IMPORTANT - my vehicle runs 5 KM on 2 Rs., brand new petrol motorcycle gives 1 KM per Re.

They hardly realise that, Refining crude oil also requires electricity! That same electricity for refining, will now directly provide mileage.

The main problem are in Research and Development, India is not up to par with many countries which are introducing and using E-vehicles. Most homemade are made with little research, they are like big toys put together in a very questionable frame covered by flashy cheap plastics. Most of them have a wheel that is also armature and have no gear or transmission which resulted in very awkward torque output ,The most advance I can think of is Ather but the price is too high for most Indian customer to invest in technology that is rather new. What India need is to make progress in research and development area and give concrete results rather than using the same slogan like environmental related bait.
The second thing which is directly related to the first is Power. Most homemade e-vehicle can run rather normal ( one person riding without passenger) in plain areas but when the inclination start to rise above 15 degree they face the same problem or when more load is put on the vehicle it easily show the low power output. Mostly they come with 1500-2000 Watt which barely makes 2 horse power, it is just not sufficient.
Thirdly, Price is the issue which is directly link with reason 2 and indirectly with 1. With the same amount you spend on most home-made e-vehicle which gives 2-2.5 horsepower you can buy petrol/diesel vehicle that can have as much as 10X the horsepower. Where in India people use vehicle for all sorts load capacity matters a lot. The price to effectiveness ratio gap is a bit too much for most Indian customer to even think about it with a serious attitude.
For India to really get serious in E-vehicle these 3 problem must be address seriously both by government and other parties.

Create a network of getting batteries in a way how we can refuel our current vehicles and I am sold. When we got to a 1000km a day trip, how can I use an EV. The current range of EVs are best suited for cities and buying a vehicle for each purpose is not what everyone can do. So range of at least 200km and a place to replace them within that range is what I believe we need.

Sir with all due respect we are just trying to move out of fossil fuel to Electric but the million dollar question is... what happens after a battery has been drained and thrown away in the environment is this bio degradable I don't think so let me just remind you that the mobile phones that we use are now coming with one time use batteries of lithium so that the manufacturer can increase production there is a ton load of e-waste and this is not biodegradable as well won't you agree with me????? I would rather say this is another type of pollution that we are creating... Man made....

Due to lack of thermal management for batteries, batteries will degrade quickly and also it affects their performance over time. This limitation is not applicable to ICE cars, This is one of the main reason, why re-sale value of EV is very very bad across the world, for entry / mid level EV cars.

People are selling classic e2os nowadays. ReSale is good after saving so much money on petrol all these years.

Where is lithium? Who is making Li-ion cells in India? None. All are importing cells and making modules. Norway has zero import duty and zero VAT on electric cars. OEMs have the battery recycling responsibility in Europe. Does India offer the same? Nothing short of 400km range works in India with AC needs and traffic congestion. A 400km ideal is 200km in Bangalore. Swapping batteries model didn't go well internationally due to underlying safety requirements after each battery swap. Car electric wiring designs should be forward tech compatible so the new version battery can be placed in an old car. Renault Zoe and Nissan Leaf are doing that. Hyundai Kona EV and Kia Niro EV should be game changer models by 2020 in India. Waiting for them.

Would like you to drive in slow moving traffic with traffic jams in May in India in your non AC electric car, hopefully you would admire old Internal Combustion cars then.
