- Hi Guys;
In this short video tutorial, I'm going to walk you through the steps on cleaning a small battery operated clock. These little 3 or 4 inch clocks are common in wall clocks, desk clocks and many other places.
More information can be found at the article on are website...
myjewelrybench...
They are not always the same, so make note of that. I have a lot of customers who come in with a clock they purchased that broke, and a new little movement that doesn't fit. We usually have to modify these, or we order the correct one for the customer. Sometimes, they can be cleaned and made to work again...
Chick this video out to see how we do this...

Thanks Peter, you saved me a lot of headaches on several of my quartz clocks, not to mention the $. I'm a RUclips creator also, and I'll gladly share your video.
Hello our kitchen wall clock stopped. Your video gave me confidence to take it apart and reassemble which fixed it! I think the gears came disconnected at some point and a tiny bit of plastic fell out. Thank you for posting 👍🏻
This is the best tutorial I’ve seen! It was awesome that you explained what to clean the gears with, where to lubricate, and WHY it would help or not. My cheap plastic clock has been ticking for over a decade, and thanks to you, I have hope that it can continue to tick (and accurately tell time) once again!
Thank you much, going to give this a try. I have 2 clocks that have the "only work horizontally disorder". One is a cheapy from Target, maybe $4.00 and the other is a discontinued glass clock that I love from IKEA. I will do what you did with the cheapy Target clock first, taking a picture of the gears before I take them off, so I can put them back in order, clean everything and see what happens. If it works out, I will do the IKEA clock, if not, I guess I will be reading the IKEA clock from the tabletop! LOL.
Thanks again for this video.
Update: 9/19/22 It worked beautifully! The cheap clock is working, I'll do the IKEA clock tomorrow. Taking pictures of the gears first helped as a reference to the order they go in. I used a small toothbrush to clean each gear and get in between the spokes. Really worked out well.
By watching youtube I can now strip down iphones and quartz watches and fix so these videos are well worth watching, Thanks for this video
Thank you very much! This video is really helpful because it proves that old damaged and unfunctioning quartz clocks can be repaired and restored. So that people will no more get tempted to throw unfunctioning quartz clocks into garbage or by the side of road or street and so soil pollution too can be avoided.
great tutorial. this is one of the benefits that makes youtube so great. thanks for posting.
Thank you for your kind comments
Thank you thank you thank you! I only received my new clock that I bought online yesterday, and I had tried about half a dozen different batteries to no avail. As soon as I watch your video I check it, move it a little with the screwdriver and hey presto it’s fixed! Thanks again, you’ve saved me the nightmare of having to try to get through to Habitat customer care!
Thanks a lot!!! Thanks to you I fixed the wall clock!!! Really grateful to your great contribution. Greetings from Spain!
Glad to hear
I was able to repair my broken cat food feeder using this method (the timer uses a standard Quartz mechanism). A very helpful skill 😊
Repairing a battery operated clock. Now I've heard everything! Good job, sir, and thank you.
I did this repair on a cheap Target clock as a dry run to see if I could do it, before attempting to repair my more expensive clock with the same problem. It worked out perfectly. Sometimes what is about to be discarded is good testing ground. 👌👌👍
Glad to hear
Great video, Looks easy enough, think I"m gonna try it. You information was very helpful thanks
Just once, I'd like to see a tutorial WITHOUT BACKGROUND MUSIC. Thanks for the video - I'm taking mine apart yet again to see what's up.
I stopped using music a long time ago. Thanks for watching. Catch up on newer videos.
@@watchesandjewelry That’s a shame. I rather enjoyed the music. It matches your soothing radio voice!
Ditto..there's no need for music, it's distracting.
I fixed my clock!! Thank you!
May have to try this on a used novelty clock I got Yesterday. It's stopped several times since I hung it up. BTW where can i get that little bit of oil you used?
Thanks Peter..I'll give it a go
Most of the clock problems are due to a battery leak. Thanks D... the contacts need to be cleaned and worse the gears too if it gets inside. Some cannot be opened if attached to the clock dial. You now have to remove the bezel then clock hands then clock module you see here. If the clock is not working, you might want to put the battery in as a check when only the motor magnet is cleaned and replace. It should spin like a seconds hand.
Wow, look so easy if U know how to do it. Thanks.
thank you for this tutorial, its really helpful, helped me figure out the problem for my wall clock ...
Thanks and I enjoy the music
Nice to see someone with more experience than I have also struggles to remember which gear goes where. 😂😂😂 Great video.
Got a quedtion too. Does it make a diffeence if i use a rechargeable Ni-MH AA instead of a normal Alkaline battery? I know they are rated with different voltage 1.5 alkaline vs 1.2 Ni-MH. Just wondering if this would make clock speed different?
Thank You for making me feel more intelligent...
My friends hawkeye clock stopped working. Was going to just buy her another one but i really like fixing things and rather do that unless it takes too much time to where its not worth the hassle.
Same fix if clock loses time, with new battery, but still runs? Thanks in advance.
Do they make metal gears that last longer or would metal gears cause different problems
Also, what are the exact main points of dust infiltration? I'd like to try sealing those spots a little to protect my favorite clocks.
Hi, I was wondering if you could help with my clock. I have a Home Interior clock from my mom, the battery compartment looks different than the one in the video. It is sort of multi layered and has a "board" with some soldering on it. the battery compartment is glued to the clock or I would have just replaced it. is there a way I could get a picture to you?
I have a large battery wall clock that the second hand falls off, then I can't get the time right. Can you suggest what to do? Thank you
Without seeing it in person, hard to suggest anything. However, if you can remove the second hand from the clock. See if it keeps time and works properly without it. Could be a balance problem if the second hand is not sized for the clock correctly
Would like to know what kind of oil you used? Does it have to be a type of synthetic clock oil? Thank you!
There are several good oils for quartz clocks made of plastic. Search esslinger for plastic oil. They have a few
Thank ,my clock works again!
My clock had a different design for the cover; I took off the knob and was able to take the cover off while still mounted to the clock, sprayed dry lube into the gears, no need to disassemble the works, and now is working fine. So try that first!
Hi, is the dry lube still working on the clock? Any particular brand of dry lube (I've never worked with it before. Only used silicon spray.) Thanks for the suggestion, appreciated.
I am needing help with the cylenoid and hooking that up to the gears
I have a couple that play music on the hour. Played music. the clock and the music box work but not automatically. Any ideas?
i tried putting the positive end in first and as i touched the negative end to the contact and started pushing the battery into place, it started smoking. What does that mean????
I have an Elgin wall clock with a transistorized movement. How is it different than quartz?
Maybe you can help me. I have a mini pendulum clock the face of it says quartz I can't get any of the 3 hands to move. The battery has also been falling out when trying to set it up. I got it to move for about 30 seconds but when the battery fell out when setting it down to grab the base of the clock I couldn't get it moving again
crystal 32.768KHZ is for tick clock. Does continuous clock also use crystal 32.768KHZ ?
Hello Peter. Thank you for your video. I was able to get my battery operated motor in my clock going but it is slow. I would love to just get a new motor. The issue that I have is that I inherited the clock from my mother and it has sentimental value. The clock is a Seth Thomas clock, which is made with nice wood and inlays and apparently worth between $700--$900, so not cheap. The motor is nothing special, but the hands of the clock are unique and have a S on the minute hand and a T on the hour hand. I would definitely like to keep the hands. I was told from the clock parts guys online that each motor has different diameter shafts and the new motors wouldn't accommodate the hands that I have. The company is no longer in business and wasn't able to find Seth Thomas motor/hands combo for my clock. Any insight or tips that you have that could help solve my problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much, Mark Viqueira
Can you take a picture and send it to me via Facebook?
@@watchesandjewelry Will do. I will send some pics now via FB
Thanks

What about if my clock keeps time just fine, but the chime isn’t going off anymore?
Good day sir, may I ask how can I fix the magnetic gear? The issue is that it doesn't turn, but it makes pulses/movement. Thanks!
Great question. It is probably dirty. Carefully take all the gears out. Wipe them off or use som rodico putty (watchmakers putty). Then clean the gears with 71% rubbing alcohol. Dry them. Use a que top to clean the clock parts where the gears are seated. Make sure there is no debris. Make sure all are dry. Use a light weight oil made for plastic on the magnetic heat and others. Use only a drop or less. You don’t want to over oil. If the electronics are good and no damage the click will probably run fine
Peter Grande will do. thanks mate, cheers!
Boy do I have several one’s ( clocks) that need to be fixed too ! Harder than it looks !
How do you fix these kind of clocks if they are losing time?
For anyone inexperienced like me, it’s infinitely harder to get those tabs popped off than it looks in the video. Part of my problem is the black box is still connected to the clock, which makes getting the ideal angulation with the screwdriver so much harder. I feel like I’m about to break my clock (though it doesn’t work anyway, so no harm no foul).
After stabbing my thumb with the mini screwdriver a couple times, I finally have one tab opened.
So i finally got the tabs open, and the two side gears went flying. That middle gear you effortlessly pulled off is completely stuck for me.
I think I finally figured it out. This was probably the most useful video I found. I have a headache, I hate everything, and next time I will just buy a new clock.
bruh i have the same problem and i don't feel like doing all that!
I've got an Elgin movement that is quite different from these, my guess is its much older. It uses a flywheel type of mechanism. I tried to move the hands to adjust the time like I've done several times in the past but this time the clock didn't continue working. Any ideas?
Try setting the time again, move back and forth and see if it frees up the the movement... if not, all I can offer without seeing it is to lightly shake it to see if it starts up...
Is one able to move the hands to change the time?... instead of taking the clock down off the wall and doing it with the dial on the back?
Move them forward. Gently. If your clock has a chime function, allow it to chime at its regular position so as not to throw off the circuit.
How do we remove the movement from the dial ?
But you are not "fixing", just "assemblying". You didn't show WHICH PROBLEM the clock had to begin with.
I have done all that and the little tiny Gear with the magnet on the bottom does not rotate 360 degrees. It goes 180 forward and 180 backwards. That's what causes the second hand to just sit there and jump but never moves. Do you think in time to electric components wear out like that little capacitor?
Yes. It’s beyond cleaning. I see that type of failure from batteries corroding.
@@watchesandjewelry I guess after 15 years something has just worn out. I know the batteries have never corroded. Thanks
You’re welcome
How do you take out the hands of the clock?
Clock hands are either pressure fit or have a cap screw. If there is a cap screw, remove it. Use something line a plastic baggie and a tool that will allow you to pry up on the hands carefully so as not to damage the dial
@@watchesandjewelry Thank you.
The megnat keeps moving and wont stay in one spot. What do i do?
Enjoyed the movie but can't find the putty you mention to clean the gears Gilbert
Rodico. That’s the name
Great video... and I thought I HAD IT, but no, second hand just flutters still (second hand goes backwards even a second or so and then just flutters.) Cleaned everything (gears looked pristine, only place that looked bad is what looked like a blob of glue on copper coil... maybe bug goo??? So, cleaned that off with vinegar.) The gear that attaches to magnet is VERY pliable, not as rigid as all the other gears... so maybe teeth bend instead of turning. Ugh, I thought I could fix my vintage Japanese clock (Rhythm Watch Co.)
i bought a "vintage" (i think) spartus wall clock (rooster design) and it takes one C battery - mechanism looks a bit more complicated than what is shown in this video here. there is a s - f wheel. would you recommend taking it apart the same way and just cleaning? there are lots of metal parts visible through the orange plastic case...
Hi Rebecca. I would tell you that if you want to take it apart you should have the confidence to put it back together. Unless you don’t care. The alternative is replacing it with something similar.
Those movements are not complicated but the gears come apart easily. Just pay attention to the placement of the gears
@@watchesandjewelry thanks! ok i took a picture because you're right they did just spill right over as i removed the tiny screws - there is also a very fine wide loopy spring in there.
this should be interesting! maybe it's a first gen/early quartz mech?
Where is the metal shaft for the second hand?
Good to know.
Thank you!
You’re welcome
What's wrong with the clock when a new battery was put in after four and a half months why did it stop? What's wrong with the machine?
We can replace crystal?
Give me details of crystal
Got a brand new newgate clock today, its not ticking and hands not moving clockwise but the hands are changing time ?? Really confused whats going on?
So... I may not understand completely... The clock is running, and keeping time? But, you cannot change the time manually?
How to open back cover
I tried lubricating the second hand gears on my radio controlled clock to make it a little quieter and to minimize the wear on the gears but now it always gets stuck… I have yet to find out why that is.
Not that I know for sure, but when you say lubicated, what did you use - oil- WD40? The reason I ask, I found that oil makes dirt/dust stick to metal surfaces clogging uo the surface and gears. Believe me I know from putting it on my casement windows, made sliding them worse! Silicon spray worked perfectly!
Maybe you have to clean the lubricant off the gears. Maybe Peter has a better answer. All the best!
👍
@@pjj.5649 those are plastic gears and I used an oil designed for small mechanisms like watches.
Thanks for the video. I put in a battery on a quartz clock, it buzzed for a split second then stopped. Any idea on the issue? I'd rather not replace the mechanism. It's been in storage a long time.
Not sure. Was it a “N” size battery? If so be careful. They come in 1.5 and 12 volts. If it’s a standard aa or aaa clock then I would first look at the coil. Not sure though with the buzzing. Last thing, if it has an alarm, sometimes that may make it impossible to repair. The last thing I would look for is a broken tooth on a gear.
@@watchesandjewelry thanks for the reply. I is a standard battery. Could the hands be too tight? Is that a thing? I'll take a look at the coil.
Thanks good job
Did podcast on talking clock
This video focuses more on the hand of the repairer than on the parts of the clock.
What if the battery has corroded while inside? Can that be fixed?
If the battery left corrosion on only the contacts then it can be scrapped off. If it got into the movement you may want to replace the movement
@@watchesandjewelry Thank you!
White vinegar will clear it.
@@Rudy32225 Thank you!
Take a photo before pulling gears out...
Wow. Even the expert is making it looks complicated. Don't think I will even try. Goodbye clock.
There are many cheapo and defective replacement quartz movements on the market. The last one I bought from Ebay and gains about 5 minutes a week and battery only lasts about 4-5 months. JUNK! Beware out there. The problems can be many different causes not addressed here.
Thanks.
thanks and you also
I am on my third one and it runs backwards what the heck
Weird. Check the circuit board. That would be my first check. My second would be to see if it was designed that way. I see about three backwards clicks every year
Well, that was interesting. Started in the middle with the works box already in his hand. Skipped right over how to get the hands off, how to get the box off, and saw several moves without explanation before he even started talking. Next video.
If you can’t get the clock out of the case then don’t try and fix it.
Because there are litterally 10s of thousands of different clocks out there, showing you how to open all of them would take a lifetime... I don’t have that much time left.. lol.. I hope you find the best video for you, and can get yours back to working... good luck. Thanks for watching
Would have been more helpful if the entire video was within the screen.
Music is too distracting.
Drop the music
I can appreciate your possible decisions for the choice of background music but for me it takes a frustrating situation and just makes it worse. The sound is so distracting and is so annoying it makes the whole situation more stressful. Had to find another yop tuber for help
Sorry. I have not used music in a while for that reason. Hope you enjoy the newer videos better
@@watchesandjewelry Thank you, Peter. I wish you much success I have regained my composure.
Thank you. I understand
our clock is not broken yet😮💨🙄🤣
music a big distraction got up my nose i switched off
music got up my nose i had to switch off
WHAT ON EARTH IS THE POINT OF PLAYING MUSIC WHEN ONE WANTS TO HEAR ONLY WHAT THE SPEAKER IS SAYING,- IRRITATING, POINTLESS AND TOTALLY UNNECESSAY
I stopped using music a long time ago, sorry, but I'm not going back to change the videos...
@@watchesandjewelry Literally barely noticed the music, don't sweat it. Some people just look for something to whine about. Great video ^^
There was a time the watch movement was made in the USA. Most are still working. Then the CHINAMAN watch movements came along and they are just junk. Hard to believe they are still sold.
Just finished a Hampden hunter case 100 years old. Still works like new.
@@watchesandjewelry Hard to believe that a wrist watch which is mechanical has an average life expectancy of 300 years. The old stuff can not be matched. Something that the new quartz electronics movements could only wish for. Good day Peter and stay virus free too.
Worst instructor & instruction video ever!! Important part replacement is off camera and he assumes one knows where are these small gears are to be placed! No help at all... he didn't even seem to know which gears went where!
Your are unskill clock maker
Too bad your thumbs are in the way.
