Tuning up a Dell M992 CRT monitor

  • I found a free 19" Dell M992 CRT monitor on Craigslist the other day. The poor monitor is rather beat up and was filthy when I got it. I think I have nursed it back to health, but we shall see. It is made by Samsung for Dell in 2002.
Warning: Never remove the cover of a CRT unless you are trained to do so. The high voltages inside a CRT can kill you.
Sorry for glitches in the video near the end! Happens on my Samsung Galaxy S7 sometimes after pausing and resuming the recording.
    ------------
Update: Nov 17 2016, the cleaning appears to have fixed the arcing issue. On the other hand, after using this monitor to do some work, I have deemed the CRT itself is too worn out. The picture is soft and the max white level is too low to use. I'll be taking the monitor to an e-waste collection facility.

I actually had 2 of the 21" versions of this monitor (and one of the 19" on another computer) until about 2006 or 2007 when I switched to LCDs. The "snapping" problem was an aging related inherent upwards drift of some HV rail. There's a TTL level serial connector right on the back of the board (which should be accessible through a removable door in the case), and there was a way to adjust some settings using that serial port to fix the snapping issue. That was a long time ago now and I don't remember exactly what it was, but I'm sure you can google it. Look for Dell P1110 (that's the 21" model number) snapping, and I'm sure you'd find something. There's also an equivalent Sony model number, as these monitors are entirely built by Sony, and just labelled by Dell. These were super popular at one point, as Dell had a special site where they'd sell ones that came back off lease or something. I remember checking it monthly waiting for more of them to come available! It certainly was one of the nicest monitors you could get before LCDs were any good.

The M992 is not built by Sony. It does not have the same issues that the Sony models have. It is built by Samsung. I have the Sony version, the P992, which DOES have the G2 drift issue, I need to fix that as it is getting to the point where it is too bright even at zero percent brightness.

The snap is often caused by a shock jumping off the anode cap into the tube. You can reapply dielectric grease under the anode cap to fix the issue.

I've had two Mac all-in-ones (iMac G3 and Power Mac 5260) crackle and pop the first few times I fired them up but eventually the crackling and popping stopped. All I can think of is that those machines sat a LONG time without being powered on and somehow that caused thr crackling and popping...

I got lucky with the one I just picked up. came with a Dell Dimension 5400 and all the peripherals (the mobo on the pc has burst capacitors though). The whole setup looks like it had barely ever been used so the monitor is in wonderful condition. Didn't even have to dust the internals. The OS looks like it's almost a fresh install too.

ADRIAN BLACK, i have never seen those high voltage flyback plastic round "insulators" you called them? Other arcade monitors or TV monitors i have never seen those "insulators" on the red flyback high voltage wire. What are they or just only used for this monitor?

i got a dell p1130 and the image is sharp 100% only if i view it from the angles, if i sit in front of the monitor it is a little blurry and anoying after 1h of use.
in 2022 i started not to use the lcd bullshit tech. tired of it.
i can do multiple resolutions, i find the best for me 1920x1080@105hz dp>vga passive.
i opened it up, played with all the rings possible, made it a mess and made it look crysp again but the 10% blurr is not going away.
do you think i should play with the flyback knobs to see if i can fix focus or remove blurr?
it is so weard, i stand up and look@ it, sharp af, i sit on chair centered 10%blurry.
i tryed the gama correction and calibration from windows but nothing helped, 10%blurr all over the screen still present when viewing centered.
now i am thinking... shall i loosen the yoke and play with it?
shall i play with the flyback knobs?
the screen has the protective layer cut off the glass, should i polish the glass in hope that it can remove the 10% blurr?
thank you all for taking time to read this, i am in need for help and sugestions and will apreciate it 1000%

There are two screws on the bottom that i unscrewed but the top is held shut probably by clips that i cant get to. Any tips on how to remove it?

I dont know if this is late but if you want to open the monitor up, you see on the top of the monitor? there's these 2 slits/holes where the plastic case meats the front tube. get something small enough to fit in that hole and push down, it will make a somewhat loud snap noise.

That's exactly the issue mine has, I want to adjust rhe flyback but am afraid to die :)
Technicians are not an option, you'll be hard pressed to find a decent one for LED monitors where I live, let alone CRTs

    • @skeledog1942
      @skeledog1942 2 года назад +4

While CRTs are very dangerous, a flyback adjustment is probably one of the safer things you can do. I recommend using a ceramic screwdriver just to be safe, but what you need to do is remove the back panel while the CRT is off (on a lot of monitors this is super easy and this is just a back cover, the components are all on a tray that stays in place when cover is removed. Then just turn the monitor on and slowly adjust each knob with a test image on screen. Do stay far away from the neck area of the tube itself, but really the only thing you should need to touch are the flyback knobs and as long as you have a ceramic driver then you should be fine.
For extra safety ware shoes and stand on top of some books or something while doing this so that you are not grounded.
