    ---- Timberlake's Description ----
In How To Solve Sudoku Using SET - Smart Hobbies Collaboration by Smart Hobbies, I will show you how to solve the Classic Sudoku “Sun, Moon, And Star” by Philip Newman by using the expert Sudoku trick known as Set Equivalence Theory (SET). Using traditional solving methods, this puzzle requires several advanced strategies to solve including Swordfish and Jellyfish, but with SET, the solve path is much more straightforward. I solve this puzzle logically and explain the solving strategies as I apply them. Thank you Philip Newman for permission to feature your puzzles.

WOW!! This is one of the most extraordinary theories I have seen. It was very tricky for me to follow the set up but I most definitely want to learn more about this.

We talk about how Sudoku puzzles have evolved. We also talk about setters creating new constraints and creating harder puzzles. Not only the setting of Sudoku puzzles has evolved but also the solving techniques. Set theory has been a game changer for solvers. This video I think expands on the idea that we are used to seeing.

I just don't understand how he marked 3 rows and 4 columns. Shouldn't the counts be the same?

They do not have to be. If you add an extra row then we can adjust by adding another set of the givens to compensate. In order for SET to work with this puzzle, you are looking at a way to determine the unknowns in one set by the knowns in the others. I hope that helps.

I’ve watched Timberlakes videos on SET before, so I think I am getting the hang of it a little more. I still probably wouldn’t use SET unless I am told about it. Also, correct me if I’m wrong but could you also use c2,c4,c5, and c7 with r2,r4 and r7?

If your not familiar with SET and I'm no expert at it , it is quite daunting , I believe Timberlake has some SET tutorials on his smart hobbies channel that might help.

I do. Here is a link to my first SET tutorial that explains the process a little more: ruclips.net/video/-bPgGG3zJiE/видео.html I will admit it took me a few times of watching others discuss it before I caught on myself.
