What a wail. So distinctive. I remember her powering up out of Drogheda toward Kellystown summit on the Belfast line years ago. You'd hear her from miles away. My favourite locomotive. I hope 082 is saved for preservation at the end of her commercial life.

wow! what a sound! I was in well I think it was this very locomotive years ago. i'm blind myself, and every sunday evening, i'd have to get the train from Castlebar to Dublin to go to the bording school there, the problem was, that usually, the mother would beg, and pester students to keep an eye on me, but now and then she wouldn't be able to find anybody, so i would then usually be deposited, in the mark 3 generator van, with such good souls, as Sean Casey, etc, who would let me on the telephone, to cherp, stand clear of the doors! but once i was let up in the engine, with a chap, I think his name was masterson, it was a 701, class like this one, i'll never forget the thundering roar it made, and the driver helping me down, and saying, now i'll teach you, to have a piss on the track lad! another lovely gentleman was tom brown, he was a ticket inspector, and alwayss kept an eye over us. i'll never forget the day, because my mother worked in the hospital, but a train derailed outside claremorris, of a sunday, and i was due back to dublin that night. the train went to claremorris, and then on to tuam, athenry, and dublin, a mark 3 rake, but for ages after that, we had to suffer the mark 2s, which i hated, because, the mark 3s were so much more comfortable, no comparrison realy, i can still remember, the aging stuffy smell of them, and the noise of the breaks, instead of the gentle hiss the mark 3s made when closing the doors. aand the seats like benches, weren't as comfortable. then another time, i was older, we collided with cows at between roscommon and athlone. and i do believe, that some piping for the airbreaks, was damaged, but the driver himself had it fixed within an hour. anyhow, there were good footballing lads from breaffy who bought me a few bottles from the dining car, I was too young to buy my own legally at the time, and mighty craic was had. now because their were few mobile phones at the time, i never thought, or it never occured to me to ring the blind school, and the lady there was so worried, she rang the guards! it didn't help, when I rocked up, help, when I rocked up half steamed, spouting some nonsense about a train hitting a herd of cattle lol
