The best thing about Daniel Warren Johnson is that he don't try to be cool with cheap methods, he tries to be honest and coherent, from the storytelling, to the idea, even with the composition - the stories are believable, the characters have feelings and they make mistakes, the art is liveful, even on little details, like face expression (I love when he draws sad faces, soooo great). And I love to see that he has no fear on deleting his pencils when not convincing enough and that he moves on new stuff, don't stop on one thing and do it again and again.
I disagree with all of this. Johnson brings nothing new to the table and his art is mediocre. The fawning over his work is mainly done by comic hipsters. The type that complain about glossy paper because it reflects sunlight through the window of the coffeehouse the pretentiously read their comics at, and think everything should be on yellow newsprint. His Wonder Woman looks like someone aping Frank Miller... badly.
I LOVE THAT there is large enough comics community that we can keep discovering new artists, sometimes years after they debut. i have done this so many times. its fun to be there at the beginning, and its always a bit sad to think someone got by you, but there is that separate thrill of finding someone at a peak, and having a catalog to enjoy.
For me one of the works that I would say that really excited me from Daniel would be murder falcon from Image Comics. Just having a main character in a story have cancer and really have a battle with it but also trying to get back on his feet and dealing with this creature that is trying to destroy the world with his partner murder Falcon I thought a lot of the story was really amazing and he was talkin about life and death. It having a humanoid Falcon with a robotic arm was really cool.
Some love given by Comic Tropes to one of my favorite creators out there Daniel Warren Johnson! Holy Moly! His tales of revenge and hope, love and loss, have really moved me over the last few years! To me his art has a Moebius/Geoff Darrow crossed with Kirby faces and Manga style action! He grew up locally and I met him when Extremity #1 came out at my LCS.
DWJ is easily my favorite artist in comics right now. Interesting note WW:Dead Earth is the story of Moses. Just like Moses she leads a city across the desert to the Promises Land. Absolutely stellar work!
David Harper of Of Panel and SKTCHD turned me on to Daniel. I was reluctant at first because Extremity was 2 volumes and didn't have the typical Vol 1 discount, but Holy heck am I glad I jumped in! His use of perspective, sense of movement, jaw dropping big splash page moments, and gritty and emotional storytelling is the best.
I have to thank you I watched this video about 2 years ago and DWJ has become one of my favorite Comic Book Artists and has influenced my own art immensely since I’ve gotten into his work, I even watch his Fridays With DDubs every week now since discovering him i appreciate this video
Daniel Warren Johnson is one of my favorite artists - right up there with Chris Samnee! Both are masters of composition, nuance, and draw action better than I've seen.
I like Murder Falcon a lot! I gave my first tpb of it to a friend of mine that had fallen away from comic reading, then bought another copy for myself.
Haven't read the other works, but your WW: Dead Earth comments are on point. Best Big 2 work of the past year, hands down. DWJ delivers the small moments as effortlessly as the big ones, and his art style was perfect for the environment that he presented. It took a few pages in that first issue to get used to Diana not looking all sleek and regal, but gosh did it work over the course of the title. Thanks for highlighting this impressive talent.
My first exposure to DWJ was in Extremity. I picked up the first issue and stopped there. It wasn't until Murder Falcon came out that I had totally bought in to what Johnson was doing. Admittedly, MF's premise being what it was and me being a metal guy as well,it was a no brainer for me. But at the end of every issue,he'd have readers letters and go thru a bit of his process and make a playlist and so forth and it made just appreciate the guy even more. Definitely, one of my favorite books of 2019. And WW: Dead Earth is a masterpiece. Read it if you haven't already.
Never heard of him before... but you had me at "Paul Pope"! Going to check out the WW story you mentioned ASAP. Thanks again, Chris, for another great watch.
Johnson's art is stunning. Halfway through the video, I couldn't help but pull out a sketchbook and start drawing, because it's just so inspiring to see something truly fresh in comics. Now I gotta go read everything he's ever done...
I really enjoy your channel, but haven't purchased a comic in over a decade. your enthusiasm for and screenshots of Wonder Woman Dead Earth convinced me to buy it. starting first issue now. Thank you, Chris
thanks Chris, you earned me bopping that subscription button with this vid. i'm always pleased and grateful to be steered towards worthy comics talent i am not aware of.
I’ve read Ghost Fleet, so I knew his art looked familiar. I can’t wait to check out some of these titles. Starting with Murder Falcon since my library has it - great video Chris!
Just finished Wonder Woman dead earth, it was amazing, stunning art and a hearth warming story, really gave me appreciation for Diana’s empathy for humanity. Thanks for another great recommendation.
Hey man, I love your vids. By the way, I have a suggestion. You should check out this comic series called "Star Spangled War Stories". It's a very interesting series and it tells fantasy-like or sci-fi stories with a wartime setting. From what I've seen, the comic series mostly contain dinosaurs and soldiers, but there's other interesting stuff too.
Thanks for introducing me to this work. What you said about the choices Johnson makes in showing action reminds me of something I read Kirby saying about how it's usually best to show the aftermath or follow-through rather than an action itself. You really got me excited to see more of Johnson's work.
Cool. So I went and bought Extremities # 1. My take so far is that I'm not crazy about his figures and faces but I'm loving the action sequences and epic backgrounds. Thanks for the tip! Thanks for another episode.
totally agree, I love all three but as a musician Murder Falcon really hit me personally because I am going through the same problems of him as having a hard time picking up the guitar...
I've mostly fallen out of the scene over the past couple years. I miss knowing of these fringe or lesser-known creators. Despite actually having read Extremity #1 and being familiar w/ Murder Falcon and WW: Dead Earth, this is the first time Daniel Warren Johnson's name has really been made aware by me. Thanks!
Thanks for doing this one, Chris. I've been doing comic art for a while now and usually I get self critical about my style, but seeing artists like Pope and DWJ help to remind me that being different is okay. Sorry to hear about the depression. Take some time off. Your videos are awesome. Your channel is typically the first place I go to for comic book education. Keep going, brother!
Thanks for this, he hadn't registered with me but has now. Some of his work reminds me of Matt Wagner's best work on Grendel War Child? When I was thinking that, I did a quick search on youtube to see if Comic Tropes had every covered Grendel or Mage and couldn't find anything. Fingers crossed for a future episode then :)
So great you made this spotlight on his art and writing talent!! He sure is an exciting artist and I would put Tradd Moore in this list with his powerfull art. I had the honor of meeting Daniel in NYCC and bought his Old Man Skywalker comic and it's the ending of the movie Last Jedi should have been!!!
Chris. I know you mentioned you're struggling lately, and I really empathize with how that can effect your creative endeavors. I just wanted to say that your work is lovely and it's always a bright spot in my day when it's uploaded. I don't even like comic books, but your videos are a great time.
I had this on my queue for about a week when I saw the announcement Johnson is doing a Beta Ray Bill mini-series, which happens to be his favorite Marvel character. The cover features a Knull-ified Fin Fang Foom. Totally checking that out.
Couldn’t agree more on all accounts! I’ve been following him on social media for a couple years now and each sketch/commission is a masterpiece. Especially agree on the obvious pairing with a Star Wars book. I’m always on the lookout for an affordable copy of Old Man Skywalker but I fear that ship has sailed.

I agree with Alberto
@@RockandrollNegrosince that post have you managed to calm down a bit?

It’s 2 in the morning and I’m happy to watch comic tropes
3:30 am here. Same.
Wonder Woman: Dead Earth is incredible
Daniel is one of my favourite creators at the moment. His art is so dynamic and raw.
Just picked up Murderfalcon, so excited to read it.
Aaaand just picked up the first two issues of Dead Earth 😂 Murder Falcon was incredible.
Super fun
Murder Falcon was a blast, ripped my heart from my chest
One of my favorite comics of all time
Chris, the fact that I now know that you're metal makes my day. Rock on brother 🤘
You mean metal head?
Cringe
Read Extremity y'all!!! It's so good, it's hard to put into words.
Agreed, it was really good. Murder Falcon was also outstanding.
Welcome back, Dear Sir. More Power to you 💙!

Dude, spoilers.
His work on Duke/transformers is my first exposure to him. Really good stuff.

Dead Earth has the best "ORA-ORA-ORA" in western comics.
DWJ is easily my favorite artist in comics right now. Interesting note WW:Dead Earth is the story of Moses. Just like Moses she leads a city across the desert to the Promises Land. Absolutely stellar work!
Apparently I was already following him on IG without knowing any of this. Really speaks to his ability
And now in 2023/2024 he's CRUSHING it in the new Transformers comics 🔥
The production value on this video is insane! I’d love to see a series of videos like these!
I just gifted a friend Volume 1 of Extremity and Murder Falcon. Thanks for what you do, sir!🍻
Murder Falcon is the best comic I've read from the past few years. I'm eagerly waiting for the Wonder Woman: Dead Earth hardcover.
Speaking of Calvin and Hobbs, would you consider doing an episode about Calvin & Hobbes?
dude im so glad you put this guy on my radar im always looking for new reads and this guy sounds like breath of fresh air in terms of originality
Someone else who has an amazing work ethic is you! Thanks for the insights, Chris!
Damn, look at that art. I was searching for a western artist with oriental dynamic instinct, for years. Definitely gonna check this man. Thanks!
Agreed. Are you familiar with Riley Rossmo or Ricardo Lopez Ortiz? They have that mix you might be looking for.
@@robchope5205 Rossmo's art looks sweeet. I've got some study to do, jeje. Thanks for the recommendation. 🙌
He’s such an awesome guy, was able to meet him at San Diego comic con. His art is just amazing
I've met him at conventions. He's a nice guy. I have a commission from him.
his commissions are STUNNING.

Never heard of this dude either and now I am sold. Thank you!
I haven't even watched the video yet and this is getting a "like" from me. DWJ is a goddamned beast and everyone should be taking notice.
Can't agree MORE. Between DWJ, Dan Mora, and Nick Derington - the future of comic art is bright.
Daniel Warren Johnson is one of my favorite artists - right up there with Chris Samnee! Both are masters of composition, nuance, and draw action better than I've seen.

Love Daniel Warren Johnson, my favorite artist/writer from the moment. Keep it going Chris!
I love how personal and also informed your videos are. I wish more channels would talk about any given medium with as solid a combination of both.
Another great artist showcase. Excited to check out Space Mullet.

I've been screaming at everyone to pick this up. Loved it! He's amazing!
Which one?
I also see a bit of Paul Pope in his style. I love it and need to read up - thanks for covering his work!
I suddenly felt there was a new video from you and I checked and it was uploaded just ten minutes ago
Met him at HeroesCon and he is a very pleasant dude. Picked up Wonder Woman Dead Earth and loved it. Great, great episode Chris.

Nice showcase of his work!
I'm loving his Wonder Woman comic right now!
Was watching him draw at Comic Con two years ago. Literally "Slinging Ink". Fascinating to watch him work.
Love the Kirby crackle backgrounds you added. Nice touch

Your enthusiasm for his work has me VERY interested. I just ordered Murder Falcon and the Wonder Woman Dead Earth. This looks great!
The new outro music absolutely SLAPS!!
totally agree, I love all three but as a musician Murder Falcon really hit me personally because I am going through the same problems of him as having a hard time picking up the guitar...
Wow, I might have to check Murder Falcon or Wonder Woman Dead Earth. Looks fun!
One of my favorite artists right now, very inspiring
Comictropes at night well I can dig it.
I loved Wonder Woman: Dead Earth. Now I HAVE to read Murder Falcon. I love kaijus, I love metal and I love this guy's artwork. Sold!
He also has a RUclips channel, Daniel Warren Johnson that is
Cooooomic troooopes!
We just bought dead earth because of this video. Thanks for being awesome!
Excellent work. I'm convinced. I'll check out his work (and continue to recommend yours.)

I've really come to love this channel, particularly when Chris focuses on things he loves.
Huge fan of DWJ. Thanks for the awesome video! Glad I found your channel!
I felt the same way about the Luther Strode trilogy. Totally restored my faith in Image. Amazing story, powerful art. Nuff said.
He's been on my radar for a while! I loved Wonder Woman Dead Earth
I've been so hyped for this episode!! I LOVE this guy's art! thanks for doing this!

I loved Wonder Woman Dead Earth, but didn't think about looking at Daniel Warren Johnson other works. I'll be picking up Murder Falcon! Thanks!
The art looks really good. I didn't know about this guy before. Interesting video.
This was so great and I can't wait to check out DWJ's comics. Honestly my favorite Comic Tropes episodes is Chris deep diving about stuff he loves.
Thanks for highlighting this under appreciated creator.
