  • In this video I show you how to cut a double mount using a Keencut Ultimat Futura. The principle is the same for hobby cutters like the Logan range. The main difference is that if your mount cutter does not have the top and bottom stops as shown in the video, then you have to draw in the pencil lines to find your start and stop points. (Let me know if you want to see a demo doing that). The Keencut has top and bottom stops so you don't need the pencil lines.
The are different ways of cutting a double mount. I use this technique and teach this technique, as it provides a consistent method for accurately hand cutting double mounts.
The steps described are as follows:
    1. Cut the top board to GLASS SIZE (e.g. 250 x 200mm). This will be the top window mount.
    2. Cut the inner board to GLASS SIZE - 5mm. i.e. make this inner board slightly smaller than the top mount. (e.g. 245 x 195mm)
    3. Cut the border on the top border by reducing your planned border size to the amount of colour you want to expose on the inner board. i.e. if your planned border is 55mm, then you can reduce this to 50mm (in the example I cut this border at 52mm to expose a slither of colour)
    4. Now - really important if you're using this technique - STICK the two boards together. Don't forget to stick the fallout out back in place too. This becomes your slip mat when cutting the second mount.
4b. If you're on a hobby cutter with no stops, this is the point you draw in the next set of lines to cut the inner border.
    5. Cut the actual border on the inner mount at 55mm (for this example)
Voila! Let me know how it goes.

Have fun. Make practising new techniques your Friday afternoon slow down.

Why must you put the window back in the first/top board? To act as a slip sheet?

Yes, the slip sheet is key whenever you are cutting window mounts and so when you stick the two boards together the inner mount will be one mount higher, so you need the second in place to act as a slip mat.
It's also worth noting that we often return the fallout when cutting decorative mounts. It also preserves the integrity of the boards and keeps everything stable.
      Enjoy doing decorative pieces!
