  • Custom Cez builds an home made english wheel DIY.
In this 3 parts episode Custom Cez calls on Janusz "Polsky Rage" Wilczek for help, along with a special guest, a fan of the show that offered his services for the show's noble cause, Sergio from the FB group Rat Bike Italia.
This english build is divided in 3 parts, the construction of the frame, the manufacturing of the anvil supports and, last but not list, the construction of the lift mechanism.
    CHAPTERS:
00:00 - English wheel plans animation
00:29 - Welding of the frame
01:31 - Transfer of the blue print to the stock
01:37 - Cutting of the stock
    01:45 - Perforation
02:25 - Assembly and welding of the pieces
03:55 - Creation of the spacers
04:16 - Carving of the bottom support pin
05:00 - creating the wheel support
07:33 - creating the lift mechanism and working the piston and cylinder on the lathe
08:23 - CNCed a pocket on the steel tube
09:05 - Welded the tube to the main structure
    10:00 - finalized the build
11:10 - tested the english wheel with a piece of aluminum sheet
    Original episodes:
    Part 1:
    • How to build a DIY eng...
    Part 2:
    • How to build an englis...
    Part 3:
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmHcq...
PART ONE - BUILDING THE FRAME
Janusz brought us a bunch of tubing left over from a construction site to use to build the frame of the english wheel.
While working on the project Janusz has taken the opportunity to teach us a couple of tricks on how to weld for strength and penetration, which resulted in an actual welding competition among us.
The frame is assembled and strengthen while checking alignment and tolerances to produce a nice final result.
    What did we do:
    Tube cutting
    Welding of the frame
    Tolerances check
PART TWO - THE ANVIL SUPPORTS
In the second episode we make the support brackets that will hold the top and bottom anvils. The bottom one is designed for quick change of the wheel depending on the needed radius.
We start by cutting the necessary pieces to assemble the top bracket, three pieces made out of 5mm stock plate. We make the two holes on the side panels using a press drill with a step bit.
Then we tackle the bottom wheel support, spacers and the center pin.
    What did we do:
    - Transfer of the blue print to the stock
    - Cutting of the stock
    - Perforation
    - Assembly and welding of the pieces
    - Creation of the spacers
    - Carving of the bottom support pin
PART THREE - THE LIFT MECHANISM
In this 3rd and final part we make the lifting mechanism for the bottom anvil.
We went to see my neighbor, Mr. Pietro, to use his lathe so we could make the piston and cylinder for the system.
Them we CNCed a pocket on the tube to fit a pin on the piston so it would travel straight up and down and finalized the build of the English wheel.
    What did we do:
    - worked the piston and cylinder on the lathe
    - CNCed a pocket on the steel tube
    - Welded the tube to the main structure
    - finalized the build
    - tested the english wheel with a piece of aluminum sheet

Please do tell. This is a trade/ art/ task that is done by a dying breed. We who are trying to learn and keep it alive need all the info we can get. Even if it is just trivial or minimal this info needs to be repeated.

about 70$ for the wheels bought used on ebay usa, 25 Euros of stock metal for the cylindrical raiser (the one we worked on the lathe, had to buy a full meter of it) and the rest of the metal was scrap from a construction site.

good idea.....but it would be much better to spend a little bit extra money for a heavier and stronger frame.
I ve seen a lot of commercial english wheels, they all heavier built .....for some good reason.
Hope you understand my comment right, not as a negative statement. ; -)

jockellis you can still do it man!!! For the lathe you can have that piston done by a machine shop, i’m sure you can find one in your area, even those people that bore motorcycle cylinders. The stuff I did on the CNC you can do by hand with a drill and a file (and a lot of patience). Everything else is straight up welding and measuring. Look into it and you’ll see that is simpler than it looks 😊

Custom Cez Fai Da Te Thanks. One question: round tube offers much greater twist stability than square tube - according to a mechanical engineer friend so why are these not made of the more twist resistant round tubes.

    • @CustomCez
      @CustomCez  6 лет назад +1

It’s very hard to work with round stock and it’s much harder to keep thinks square, the walls of this square tube is quite thick and plenty strong for this project.

nice build, but geez i cringed when you hand held the piece in the drill press. cant tell you enough to clamp your work down instead of doing that. idk how many times ive watched guys do that then the piece busts their fingers or rips flesh off. shop safety is real fellas.

Thanks for the demo... I'm gonna build one... but please tone down this insane and loud music or take it out entirely. It's such a put off! It ruined your video.
