Because of university, I was away from the internet for a few days and didn’t watch the news either. I know what’s happening in the Middle East but I wasn’t up to date. I saw the campaign images in some newsletter but I didn’t make the connection, I just thought it’s a little too try-hard at being edgy.
I must admit, that unless you’re very involved and up to date with the issue, you would not connect those images to the crimes. You’d need the images shown side to side to see it.
I genuinely believe that some people just were or are not aware, this might have happened in the marketing department of Zara because no company in their right mind would commit public s*icide like this voluntarily.
I also don’t think that certain people with Zara are innocent. Especially the designer and concept creators of this campaign are sus
I don’t know the details, mega-corporations like inditex in general are way too layered and structually complex to fully understand who is responsible for what and to condemn every employee from top to bottom is over the top, especially going to the shops and making the poor sales assistants’ life tough is unnecessary, they’re not the ones who did this.
However. I must say that this is disappointing and that the right people within Zara should be questioned and held accountable for this.

@@devilayouba well, I understand your point of view, both campaigns are linked to the support of things that must absolutely be condemned, but the cases of balenciaga and Zara differ from each other in their ways of alluding or allegedly alluding to troubling things.
Balenciaga is very much in your face, there’s no denying what it insinuates. to this day I fail at comprehending how balenciagas team could ever think that it was a good idea. Zara’s case is more complicated, because, as I already stated, if you don’t have the images from the conflict right in front of you, you wouldn’t connect the campaign to it because that campaign is not working with classic symbols that would not leave any room for speculations.
While I do really question the concept designers choices, and I do find it tone-deaf and incredibly unaware from Zara, I just have to point out that in this case, there truly might be people involved who genuinely didn’t know (or care enough to look deeper into things). Given how, unlike balenciaga, Zara as a fast fashion brand is pumping out campaigns and collections all the time, it does seem absolutely possible that this has happened.
Fast fashion brands like Zara leave campaigns in the care of some person and then just greenlight it asap. Unlike balenciag, it’s assembly-line work over there.
Also, because you mentioned how balenciaga didn’t have to face long-term repercussions: balenciaga is endorsed and supported by celebs, it’s a high fashion brand and the price tag makes their garbage a status symbol. Unless people stop the pursue of decorating themselves with status symbols, and unless celebs stop prioritizing money and connections in the industry, brands like balenciaga are going nowhere.
public outrage and the cancel-train at full force for a hot minute doesn’t help either.
Instead of hating on a specific brand and then forgetting about it, because anger dissipates quickly, we should much rather ask ourselves how fashion brands have so much power over us that they feel cocky enough to sell us whatever.
