You should really go read his story. It's quite amazing. Born into country royalty, started singing his deceased fathers music at 8 years old, did that until he was 18 then started singing his own stuff. Was met with huge opposition. Then he survived an od, then a 500 ft fall off a mountain. After recovery he went on to have an absolute legendary career.
Two of Hank Jr's kids are also good singers themselves, his son Hank III and daughter Holly Williams. Her song 'Keep The Change' and Hank 3's 'Low Down' or 'Country Heroes' are good ones. They are keeping that family tradition alive.
1st, that is a slide steel guitar. Hank wears the shades and beard to cover scars he received when he fell 525 ft down the side of Ajax Mountain in 1975. His dad is a legend. He was part of the 1st class inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Hank Jr was inducted in August of this year. Other Hank Jr songs you will like Born to Boogie, All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight, Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound, Gonna Go Hunting Tonight just to name a few
My personal favorites are: All in Alabama (song about his fall off the mountain), Blues Man, Mr. Weatherman. There are a bunch of others, but that's what came to mind in the moment. I never heard of his song, "Gonna Go Hunting Tonight."
This is all based on true stories. He started playing his daddy's music on stage at 8 years old, pushed hard by his mother. As a teen in the 60s he listened to rock and R&B and blues and later Southern Rock. He incorporated all of that into HIS style of music and fans rebelled, wanted him to sing his dad's songs forever. He said I'm doing my music my way or not at all. He did it his way and became a huge star in his own right. Check out some of Hank Jr.'s early songs Stoned at the Jukebox, and Standing in the Shadows they tell a story of his troubles as well.
Hank Williams Sr. was taught to play by an old blues man in Alabama called T Tot. He was also plagued with back troubles from a young age that led to self medicating with alcohol, and some say harder drugs. When Hank Jr. was three his dad passed away in the back seat of his car on the way to a New Years Eve show, at the age of 29. At this young age he had already written hundreds of songs. Hank Jr. wrote a tribute song to Mr. T Tot, I do believe it is on youtube.
There's a reason for the beard and sunglasses. They cover the scars from when he fell off a mountain, Mt Ajax, in 1975. He fell about 500 feet and last all his teeth, gums, and cracked his skull open! After that fall he really became a rebel against people wanting him to be exactly like his dad. Worked out very well for him.
Hank Williams Jr is an amazing musician, along with being a great singer. He sang the weekly opening song for Monday Night Football, years back. Saw him in concert, years ago. He brought the house down. Just incredible.
This is a *HUGE* fave in bars. When they put it on, and he sings, "Hank why do you drink?" The crowd will yell "To get drunk!!" "Hank, why do you roll smoke?" "To get stoned!" It's really something to hear in person. Great reaction, enjoyed this very much!
You're never to old to listen to country music! I taught my daughter to be open to all Genres of music because it also opens your world up to many different people and the type of lives they were raised!
Good reaction, it's nice to see someone trying something they're not familiar with and giving it an honest chance. You won't like all country songs, and you don't have to, no one likes all of them. A great country song tells a story that people can relate to, maybe not personally but they know someone it has, or they can see how it could relate to them. You will find some of the best guitar players in country music, because they play with a clean sound, so they have to hit every note, there's no distortion to cover up mistakes. Give a listen to Glen Campbell doing "Gentlle On My Mind", or Roy Clark in "Dueling Banjos", or he does "Folsom Prison Blues" with Johnny Cash. Some others to get to are George Jones' "The Grand Tour" and "White Lightnin'", or his duet "Golden Ring" with Tammy Wynette, also anything by George Strait, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, and there are a lot more. Keep Listening, and thanks.
Thanks for the comment Daryl. So far so good. I will be very honest with my reactions. I’ve genuinely liked the ones I’ve reacted to. New stuff coming soon.
What I love is that Hank Williams III continued the tradition of breaking tradition, doing country music, country-metal fusion, and heavy metal. A friend is a fan and would go to shows that were actually two separate concerts (though you could buy tickets & stay for both).
I seen him last week at the delaware state fair he was awesome best country concert ive ever been too the man is a legend hes 73 and still going strong and most od the people there were teenagers and people in their 20s i couldnt believe he drew a toung crowd like that and thats why he is a legend
To truly appreciate Hank Jr, you need to understand his father's history and its massive impact on the music business. You will need to learn how Hank Jr had to emulate his father for quite some time before he snapped and decided he wanted to play HIS music which had a massive impact of its own. This man is a legend in his own right as is his father.
His dad Is the late great Hank Williams who died at 29 & wrote some of the greatest country & gospel songs of all time & is known as the father of modern country music. His daddy wrote songs such as Hey Good Lookin, I'm so Lonesome I could cry & Love Sick Blues

We are out here! I love your first reaction. I challenge you to go to one of his concerts. He's still performing as of this comment. I'm thinking about going and seeing him in Phoenix. Last year he performed 3 miles from where I live but I missed it due to personal reasons. I saw Charlie Daniels and Don Williams when I was young but I missed Hank Jr. I need to go see him. I hear that he puts on quite a show.
Country music is just telling stories over music. Some of it is really beautiful. I like watching anyone listening to a new type of music for the first time. You shoulda seen me when my wife made me listen to her favorite artist NF.
My husband was a country music d.j. in a small market. Hanj Jr. used to come to our small town in Louisana to hunt and fish. He rebilled because his mother and Nashville wanted him to sing like his father. He can play almost any stringed instrument plus.
His Dad, Hank Williams, was a pioneer in country & died when Hank Jr. was only 3. They both had a hard life in their own ways but are both great for their time!
I'm not a country music fan by any means, but Hank Jr. is one of only two country artists that I like. When he wants to he can rock it with the best of them, and also some great blues songs. You won, you didn't lose. Great Music!
The beard is to cover scars from where he fell off a mountain and almost died. Hank Williams Jr. is the man!
You don't need to go any further than Hank Jr. He is Country-Rock and is the MAN when it comes to the Quintessential Country Music LEGEND.
