Here is the sequel to one of Green Frog's most popular videos. This two disc set is a continuation of Volume 1 starting in the summer of 1963. The transition to the Cigar Band Herald is quite evident. New jumbo Hi-Cube cars appear (for the auto industry) as well as piggyback service with highway trailers on flat cars.
You'll see action on the Toledo Division, the Electric Division, between New York's Grand Central Station and Harman, as well as other locations. Also covered are the RDC Jet Trials, where jet aircraft engines are mounted on an RDC car!
Mixed in with all this action is the continuing regular freight and passenger fleets, mile long trains of new auto loadings, as well as new second generation motive power.
We finally arrive at the Penn-Central merger. We'll see a few early views of merged power equipment, not yet revealing the demise of the mighty water level route.

I remember as a kid in 1968 when they showed that jet powered ny central train racing down the track on the TV news channel, and seeing a steam engineer crying, the elderly guy was reminiscing about the good old days of steam, and regretting seeing this change, he thought it was permanent, but it didn't last long at all
When the New York Central railroad went from the lightning
stripes on its diesel engines to the crappy cigar band, that was
the start of the downfall of the New York Central railroad. I
lived very close to the Buffalo-Niagara Falls line of the old
New York Central railroad in the Town of Tonawanda from
1956 to 1959. The line was dismantled in 1964 from North
Tonawanda to Niagara Falls, all freight between Niagara Falls
and North Tonawanda of the Erie Lackawanna, Lehigh Valley
and New York Central used Erie Lackawanna tracks from
1964. New York Central became the Penn Central in 1968,
8 years later it became Conrail when the Penn Central,
Erie Lackawanna, Lehigh Valley, Reading, Jersey Central,
Ann Arbor, Lehigh & Hudson River, Stanton Island Rapid Transit,
Indiana Harbor Line, Niagara Junction & the Pittsburgh & Lake
Erie all were merged into Conrail, 1998 Conrail was split up.

Wow amazing footage! I live right near the Ex NYC Waterlevel route in Dearborn. The shot at 0:37 is right by my house which is pretty neat considering that it's single track there now. I'd absolutely love to go back in time just to see how different the railroads were back then.

That's the M-497. The Budd RDC which was converted for $30,000 to test a high speed rail project. Alfred Perlman approved the project. A pair of J37 jet engines, similar to today's B-52, were mounted atop the roof of the RDC unit. The jet engines thrust, pushed the RDC to 183mph along a 11 mile stretch of tangent track near Bryan Ohio. A record that still stands.
I remember seeing something about this in Trains or Classic trains. It was an experimental car that was supposed to be able to go very fast and revolutionize passenger travel. It had Jet engines on it, and the windows on the front were former F7 numberboards... Hope this helps!

That was a jet-powered RDC they used for an experiment at high-speed passenger travel. It reached 170 mph and was used on the Water Level Route near Bryan, OH. There is a 1988 issue of TRAINS that has a very interesting article on it.

I wish I could hear the horn blows of the NY Central diesel trains, the black diesel engines of the 60's and 70's, like the one at 0:20 into their video. I remember them from my childhood, and they had a very unique and distinct sound to them that I cherish. I've searched high and low, and can't find any clips of the horn being blown on film. :(
What (sort of) amazes me is the fact that the New York Central used E and F units for freight service (and probably used single-note honker horns).
I never got to see this line in action (PC merger happened when I was 4) but these videos give me a better idea of what it must have been like. I wish I could have a time machine and digital camcorder to get footage with sound and post those results here.

The line runs thru Champaign/Urbana -- was originally the Big 4 railroad, bought by New York Central, then became Penn Central, then was used by Norfolk & Western, then used by Conrail. Most of the trackage east of Urbana was pulled up (after the Conrail split) and now used occasionally by Norfolk Southern. I most remember seeing Conrail run along the track every couple of hours, but not much else, except dim memories of white & orange IC units, and black NW units...
Although the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) is my number one railroad. I have to admit, the New York Central Railroad (NYC) is a close second. Both are unique and great railroads in their own respective ways. Shame the merger they created went bust. Who knows what may have happened if Penn Central survived or what if the PRR and NYC became allies when they realized that they needed to work together against new forms of transportation.
I have a book on Northeast Railroading before Conrail and I have found a picture of RDC M-497 the Jet RDC before it recieved its jet engine.
Well done on this overview of the NYC diesel era! Can't help but wonder how Lima might have edged Alco on a 4-8-4 for a specific passenger train: a Commodore Vanderbilt follow-on based on the Southern Pacific's GS-4 but in gray, with "yacht-club commodore" smoke deflectors, skyrail in U. S. Naval commission-pennant colors, and a 16-wheel Vanderbilt tender with the 48-star flag at the rear of the water tank....
In answer to Sean Bodine's question: Maybe it was a nice day that day, and he didn't care if anyone was looking. He just wanted to enjoy life and be comfortable. Just be glad he had his pants on.

The Water Level Route was the name given to the entire mainline from Chicago to Buffalo. The railroad featured 1:14-1:19 is the B&O.

Why is it the high speed rail lines in other countries are still running and people still use them and theyre money makers? Privatization is the key. I still would go for Amtrak bringing back past passenger train routes that were in service back in the 60's. Detroit to St Louis, Cinncinnati to Cleveland, Chicago to Miami, Helena Montana to Denver . You would be suprised on how many people would ride these trains and support them. Let the gas prices go up to $7 a gallon!!!
You "would go for it"? Congress WON'T go for it. The other countries with high speed rail don't mix it up with freight trains. I ride Amtrak long distance trains from SYR to CHI and then to PDX or SLC and TX. They try their best but are always underfunded and constantly reducing service and amenities. And the love affair with the car/truck/SUV hasn't died out, as the cities are choked with traffic and virtually every car has one person in it. Re privatization, who would pick up the bill to run a national passenger railroad? I would love to see separate track for passenger cars only. And that costs a fortune. The Class A RRs won't pay for it.
The only problem I have with this video is too much diesel, not enough steam.

+Conducter49 No, but with a lot of train videos, you'll hear a lot of big band music. Not a bad thing at all, considering I love both. I know the apex of train usage in this country and the spread of big band preceded this Luddite-at-heart by at least a good two and a half decades, but it fits in with my loves for old cars and old typewriters. Some joys are just timeless, and I'm going to enjoy them until I am no longer able to tell about the history I've learned from them as well as my own.

The track that the train ran on wasn't good at the time. 127lb jointed rail with half the anchors needed. Today, the track is in excellent shape. Upgraded by Conrail long ago. Makes you wonder if the train could have improved it's record on it if NYC had the money to do the repairs.

@BNforever2009 Kinda funny that you mention it, China has said that their rail line was a waste of money. The UK, it's a joke. Their "high speed" rail service is so frail, all it would take is 12" of powdery snow and it's dead. Japan and Korea's, they're fine, but, why do we need them if we don't have the infrastructure anymore. We used to. I wouldn't bash someone else about not knowing high speed when you yourself don't know a thing about it. Have a nice day.
The videos of the fast passenger trains were excellent, but would've been MUCH MORE ENJOYABLE if they had cut out the music so we could listen to the diesels.
Most of these videos are great but I'd rather listen to the diesels instead of the music. Also, the "Lightning Bolt" scheme had the "Cigarband" scheme beaten by about 10 light years.
I would much rather hear the noise of the locomotives than the music.

The music is not bad we don’t need to overdub the video with “bada$$ epic epic engine sounds”. This song fits it is good
nice! but the music is way off, shouldve been Beatles, Stones, Hendrix, anything '60's, maybe 70's too... or even something totally - 60's - corny like Humperdinck or James Last. Big band 'swing' can go with footage of the '38 Twentieth Century Limited.
It does fit kind of Beatles is British it over a USA train video is unmatching…
