As a Roxy Music fan I sit here and think of my wife I lost five years ago , to a brain tumour, I will have this song played at my funeral, It is as bitter sweet as any of Shakespeares sonnets, to me.
@David Spooner; May God be with you in your sorrow David. He has a reason for everything though oftentimes we don't know it is. 1. "There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven. 2. A time to give birth and a time to die; A time to plant and a time to uproot what is planted. 3. A time to kill and a time to heal; A time to tear down and a time to build up. 4. A time to weep and a time to laugh; A time to mourn and a time to dance. 5. A time to throw stones and a time to gather stones; A time to embrace and a time to shun embracing. 6. A time to search and a time to give up as lost; A time to keep and a time to throw away. 7. A time to tear apart and a time to sew together; A time to be silent and a time to speak. 8. A time to love and a time to hate; A time for war and a time for peace. 9. What profit is there to the worker from that in which he toils? 10. I have seen the task which God has given the sons of men with which to occupy themselves. 11. He has made everything *[Lit beautiful] appropriate in its time. He has also set eternity in their heart, yet so that man will not find out the work which God has done from the beginning even to the end." (Ecclesiastes 3.1-11.).
That`s powerfull. I can understand your heartache although it is 12 years now. I lost my love 8 years ago and some songs have her sitting right here beside me. Thank God for the great music. Try some Van The Man, He works too. Cheers to the music.
David Spooner... I feel for youre loss... unfortunately every one on here has lost someone near and dear, including me. God grant. you peace and grace to empwer you to your next adventure.
This track to me is Roxy's masterpiece. It feels that Ferry wrote this years ago and waited for the right time to include it finally on the 3rd album. It is a beautifully written ballad that has a pure continental feel about it and interjected with french vocals. Clearly to me this sits at the top table of all the work they've done.
Easily makes it on to my desert island discs...a kaleidoscope of colours of emotions of sheer beauty...luxurious yet deeply resigned...grateful yet longing....euphoric yet strangely peaceful....a thing of beauty...i play it with Bryans reading of These Foolish Things...they belong together...hes the Noel Coward and James Bond of Rock....Grazie Mille!
David M I was just going to say the exact same thing! I'm American and I relate more to this song than some so-called American patriotic songs. I've cried to this song. I always put it on rotation with my portable player when I go to Europe. I always play this song when flying into Paris. What a feeling! Beautiful moments. Beautiful.
.....true Art is generally a very elusive thing, until it breaks off it's chains and lands in our laps " Like a Hurricaine " and shocks and surprises all of us willing to listen. Brian Ferry always has that potenciall to do this....and here he does it Again. !
Saw Roxy on this 2001 reunion tour dont think they ever sounded better, manzanera, mackay, thompson and ferry , the years rolled back, absolutely brilliant, ive said this before one of Britains best groups ever, so talented musicians , under rated
One of my lifelong Roxy favorite songs - Been a fan since the early 70's and seeing them again was fantastic! Have followed Bryan throughout the years and attended all his tours. LOVE THEM ALL. Signed, Virginia Plain
What if this was not a song about love, but about culture? About a hope about "freedom, equality, brotherhood", the idea of the french revolution? Goodbye Europe. 2 minutes to Midnight. Another oldie. Final Countdown. Still another. Waking up was yesterday. 💋
If I had to pick just one song to take with me - this would probably be it . Must have listened to it a thousand times over the years , yet my eyes are still never quite dry at the end !
To those who have commented on losing a loved one linked to this piece of music which painted an important verse, chapter, and book in their life, my heartfelt feelings and condolences to each and everyone of you. If I was to lose someone so dear to me (my mum and did) and could pick a piece of music to remember her by, this would be it. Reason - My mum loved Bryan Ferry.
This song is so beautiful and moves me immensely. It reminds me so starkly of the time i was in Paris with my wife. Unfortunately she passed away 7 years ago from a brain tumor. The song stirs up a lot of feelings in me.
Bryan Ferry's style of singing a romantic song is simply breathtaking. A God-given talent and a masterpiece composition of music teamed with beautiful, romantic lyrics. He seems as timeless in this video as he was in 1973 when I purchased his first album. All I can say is that as an "old-40's type crooner" the Ladies must've loved him!

MR Ferry agrees . So do I .
Most underrated performer in the history of rock !!
Brian Ferry underrated?
Hahaha
@@davidgarione2206 this song, not BF…
I don't think so. The first 4 albums are sensational.
What a ridiculous statement. Underrated is a term favored by small minds when they get excited
Underrated ? !!! By who exactly ? Only by people who have never heard of him !!!
An ageless classic written by Andy and Bryan. I never grow tired of hearing it.
Andy , Phew what a player .
This can only be described as a masterpiece. Lost for words, lost in emotion.... love you and your music Bryan ♡
DesertRainz so beautifully crafted.

Goodbye Europe, Goodbye America...Bryan foretold our fate nearly 50 years ago...
Most of the commenters here are interpreting this in a very different way.
Martin Brady - Ditto.
DAVID BOWIE said LISTEN TO THIS BAND !!!!!!!!!!!!😮😨✌g
They were so happy to see Andy improvise on the saxophone - a beautiful solo that set the whole song.
Such a wonderful song. But when Andy plays that saxophone... blown away.
The sax he plays on My Only Love. Blown further away…
They don't make songs like this anymore. Absolutely stunning.....
Viva Regatta de La Blanc. Europe the way it was. HELL America the way it was. before the jew vampires in DC struck the final nail in the coffin!
All credit to Andy McKay for penning this master piece for his friend. What a performance this is to an enchanted audience. Viva Roxy Music.
So Beautiful. The composition is brillant - I think the best song ever from this band.

"There's no more time for us,nothing is there for us to share, but yesterday" Absolutely brilliant!!!!
My favorite Roxy song of all time. For some reason I tear up when I hear it.
What if this was not a song about love, but about culture?
About a hope about "freedom, equality, brotherhood", the idea of the french revolution? Goodbye Europe.
2 minutes to Midnight. Another oldie.
Final Countdown. Still another.
Waking up was yesterday. 💋
One of the best songs ever, and I love this version. Goosebumps. Brilliant.

Where is this so polite audience ? Germany ? A great masterpiece…. Of the worlds music 😍

Beautiful song.while Europe is crying 🌹
The dramatic conclusion is effing Brilliant -
What an astoundingly brilliant performance this is... it perhaps even tops the studio version. Erudite, moving, melancholic and stunningly beautiful.
A sad and beautiful masterpiece, much like life itself.

Beautiful song. So sad, but sung from the heart.
Might be the most beautiful of all Roxy Music songs. And the competition is really hard.
Bryan you have made some great songs without a doubt always been a great fan of your music.
Look how the cities have changed and see, that nothing remains than memories. There´s no tomorrow and nothing to share than yesterday - of Europe.

perfect song ( from France)
From Apollo...Colin Good brilliant piano and Lucy Wilkins on violin makes this extraordinary with the rest of this fantastic band
The most beautiful love song I have ever heard in my life.
Also the greatest bass solo in the history of the planet.
Bass player on the studio version was the late, great John Gustafson from Liverpool! A friend of his neighbors, The Beatles!!
The greatest song ever written.
Na minha opinião, a melhor canção dos Roxy Music, uma das melhores bandas musicais de sempre
