I signed up initially thinking that HipHop is glamorized Gangsta Music. Some signed because they were dancers. But actually we learned a lot of the African American history by listening to HipHop songs. Their art is considered contemporary not just because it was ruling the airplays, but because if you truly listened to the lyrics it was mirroring the realities in their communities which the majority does not pay a lot of attention to. In a way, you can say that this is in fact protest through Art, which has been done a lot historically. What is amazing is that we did not realize, how many of the realities and injustices happening in the black community mirrored ours. Especially now. We do deal with police violence also.
