Incredible catches! Thanks for sharing insight around your setup, calling out the etiquette issue to help other learn as I think many may not be familiar with what’s too close (nice approach!) we were lucky enough score a few running a similar setup in a similar area.. 👍🏻
Thanks! I believe I am a pretty nice guy too :)) Love the PNW for fly fishing - like no other place in the world! Cheers and thanks for taking the time to watch!
The Deschutes is endlessly entertaining. The spot you fished is just a small snowflake from a very large iceberg of amazing fishing and even more amazing scenery. Thank you for such a well crafted video… especially at the beginning. I’ve been to the location dozens of times and yet your video showed me a new and beautiful perspective. Hope you come back often and try out some of the other spots the river has to offer.
Thank you Eric for the kind words and for taking the time to watch - I appreciate that! Amazing river- can't believe it took me this long to fly fish here! Can't wait to explore more - cheers and FISH-ON!
Dan I love that spot you were fishing! I spent a night in that place this summer and landed 2 hogs right in the same spot. If you make plans to go back and need a fishing partner let me know. I'd go back in a heartbeat! Great video!
That is awesome! Thank you for the kind words - I appreciate that! That riffle is a good spot for sure - love it when they run like that...so much fun! Cheers and FISH-ON!
Thanks Dan for another great fishing video, love the shoutout for the local fly shop, which one? I would love to get to the west coast for some fishing next summer/fall. Beautiful video location.
Hey Dan just came across your video through Facebook. Incredible job with your editing and fishing man. I'm going to be starting out my first year of fly fishing soon and was thinking about going out to the deschutes. Your video has been very helpful. Can you fish there without fly fishing gear?
Hey Jimmy - Merry Christmas to you! Yes - you may use artificial lures there for sure. But nothing beats on the fly :)). Thanks for being a part of my channel - I have playlists built for helping anyone that’s new to the sport - hope those help! Cheers!
Thank you! I use the DJI Mini 2 - great little work horse of a drone and easy to fly. Glad I took some time back in the day to play Halo with my son...helped with learning to fly with that controller! :))
Thanks! Check in with some of the local fly shops, in many cases they have access maps showing all spots you can fish. This was my first time on the Deschutes and it did not disappoint. I don’t want to steer you wrong with access points since I’m very unfamiliar with the river system - still exploring myself. Cheers!
Hey Anthony! In the winter it's a thermal layer pants, sock liners and smart wool socks. I wear my hiking quick dry pants over that layer...then the waders. Summertime I wear just a pair of normal socks and the same hiking pants. If it's too hot, I just wet wade with those same hiking pants :)). Cheers!
Will be in that area for the first time in about a week. Any recommendations as an entry point or starting point for the lower Deschutes? Any tips would be appreciated. Will only be there for a day.
Was just up there the first time myself a few days ago, near Maupin there is lots of great water and access, but it will probably be pretty heavy with rafters, especially in July. There is great access from paved roads that run both ways out of maupin with access and spots to pull off and park and walk down to the water. Upstream towards Madras there is also a lot of great campgrounds near the warm springs reservation area. We had some good action with fishing near the trout creek campground by the boat launch, lots of fishy water right there and upstream for a few hundred feet. Had a great time and fishing seemed pretty good, be sure to fish the edges and water close to you first before the good stuff. Lots of caddis hatches going on, so tossing one on top in the morning and evening was pretty good, and a hopper dropper with a chubby chernobyl was great for targeting fish a little deeper and on top and during the day. Have fun and tight lines!
beautiful redside at my favorite place to fly fish.. cheers
Same here!

I was skunked when I made a trip to the Deschutes. What a beautiful river! Thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it! Sorry about the skunk :(
Going there for my first fly fishing trip ever, I can't wait
Going to be a great trip!

Nice fishing
Many many thanks
Are you thinking about doing a video there during the salmon fly hatch?
I am - just hope to time that right!
Which section? Closer to Maupin or bend?? I will be there next weekend!
Thanks Dan for another great fishing video, love the shoutout for the local fly shop, which one? I would love to get to the west coast for some fishing next summer/fall. Beautiful video location.
Thank you Lee! It was the Patient Angler in Bend - great shop. Thanks for being a regular to the channel - I do appreciate that!
That section is great during the Salmon Fly Hatch. Did you fish much below the campground?
Can't wait to explore this section a bit more. Yes - I walked about 1/2 mile below the campground and got into a few fish. Cheers!
Thanks Dan. I plan to fish the lower Deschutes in August. Any fly patterns you recommend for this time of year?
Nice! Love that river - hopper dropper time! I would use a big chubby and pheasant tail dropper off the chubby about 18".
I caught a tank yesterday on the lower D. It was with a spin rod though...no luck on the fly rod😞
Nice spot
Yes it was - thanks Jess!

@@FlyFishDan I’d say it definable worked out well! Respect!
What fly lines are you using specifically for the 5wt and 3wt?
Hello Brian - I prefer the RIO Gold 'slick cast' series of fly lines...they have really worked well for me and seem to last. Hope that helps!
Sweet Video Dan! I am newer to the area and looking for that type of access. Can you help me out on how to get to that area?
Thanks!

@@FlyFishDan Thanks Dan!
Hello! I’m looking to start targeting coastal cutthroat in small rivers and creeks… what weight fly rod should I purchase?
3 or 4 wt
Hello! I would look at a 5 weight fly rod - great size for that type of fishing. Best of luck to you!
What are you wear under waders

@@JD21055 great tips. Thank you for sharing!!
@@JD21055 Thank you!
Where did you get the rod holder?
Hello Paul - I have an affiliate link in the description of the video. They are a family-owned business and really make a great product. Cheers!
@@FlyFishDan nice! I could see that coming in really handy on walk and Wade trips
@@Paulpoission It's been a game changer for me - always having two completely different setups at the ready.
Need to fish the salmon fly hatch this year..
Can't wait!
