    I was half way through opening mine when I saw in the video the usb was in place of the sata port. Well so much for trying to put the hard-drive in an swappable external case.

    That is a shame that they have USB on the PCB. Thanks for the video.

    I opened mine to be sure. What is sold here in Brazil is exactly the same. No chance of adaptation. Thanks for the video.

    For those whose M3 drive stopped working (especially after a fall), try this :
    Open the drive, unscrew the PCB and clean all the golden contacts on the board with isopropyl alcohol (some of them might have darkened with use) using a soft cloth /q-tip. Re-screw the PCB back and it hopefully it'll work. Luckily, was able to retrieve data from my 2TB version this way :)

    Hi, I have the 2TB version, it looks the same from the inside. I'm using for backups, and recently I had some connectivity issues when slightly moved the drive.
    I thought that the connector got damaged, but in my case it was the cable. Fortunately I had another WD drive with the same cable, so swapped cables, and works like a charm.

    If it dropped then maybe you just need to disassemble the drive and park the heads as they might have gotten stuck.
    I've got the 2TB version of this drive, and although I wasn't very fond of the idea of not being able to swap it out into a laptop as it does not have the standard sata interface, I can see why they embedded the micro usb connector into the board....they made the drive smaller than other 2,5 inch portable drives.
    Anyhow, they seem to have dropped this in their rebranded Maxtor portable drives as these have the usual sata connector with an usb 3 conversion board attached.

      Who do you park the heads ? I dropped mine and my MacBook Pro doesn’t read it after anymore. All I heard is a constant beeping sound for about 4 seconds.

    If you take the silver tape of you should be able to pull of the usb adapter and underneath should be a regular sata connection.

      You are right about the connection but that is on the more recent ones. My one is an earlier model and the connector is fixed straight onto the main circuit board.

    I peobably should have watched the whole video before I bought an enclosure 😅 Really shitty as ive had the drive for about ten years (used in college for homework and now used as a backup drive, so no hard use and was working great still). Dropped it about two feet yeaterday and now dead, had a load of un-organised movies and TV series on it too I'm gonna have to sort out at some point when i get a replacement

    I have the same model, just opened up mine hoping it was different, maybe a different batch, but no luck, then I was gonna swap the pcb with another drive, but I heard I'd have to swap out the bios too & I cba with soldering, so this whole thing was a waste 😭 I only wanted it to put in my modded ps3

    • @SuperHall22
      @SuperHall22 4 года назад +1

      Yes apparently the board can't be changed either because of the bios. This wasn't always the case. I have changed boards in the past, but that was a long time ago. I don't know when this bios thing started.

      @@SuperHall22 It's very annoying, I'll check the next time I buy an external hdd, & with the bios it's probably new tech, extra protection & stuff, or maybe the bios used to be inside the hdd, idk
