You just need to watch the Netflix Movistar docs to understand. It’s an amateur team full of disfunctional stars with unchecked egos. The smart move was for all teams to sit up to force Pogacar to chase all the way.
Movistar chased because of the earlier beef between Carapaz and the Movistar team during previous contract talks. Stef Clement talked about it during broadcast
I think that the reason is that he signed with inose without the knowledge of moviestar manager, and when he asked him, he did not say anything, they expected him to be the leader of Movistar in La Vuelta 2019
I'm still so pissed at how this stage ended. If Van Aert had taken 2 minutes more (or even 1.5 minutes more), he would have not attacked yesterday and perhaps ended the stage with Uran and Carapaz, taken the yellow and would have ridden to defend it today on a not so steep mountain. He would be very close to pogacar right now, perhaps still in yellow, with 5 minutes or more on the other podium contenders with a TT to come but instead he's given up.
Cortina said after the stage that the team didn't make him stop, he was cooked and saw his team working at the front and tryed to help them as much as he could, but yeah, Mas could just try to jump with Carapaz and try to make a gap with pogačar and Roglič
Movistar are very entertaining but tactically an embarrassment!! Please keep it up, I do enjoy it!! Biggest trolls in the peloton but it does them no favours.
Last year I was skeptical, but today was just wierd, it's like they consider Carapaz the main rival for Mas, but I don't think Mas is on that level. Anyway, they have a scuse, so the mistery remains.
Carapaz had already signed with Ineos when he told Movistar he would stay with them for the following season. Movistar has gotta be dirty with him for that.
I don't think that Movistar was chasing out of malice. It's just too ridiculous. I think they lack all creativity in team tactics and the only thing they can come up with is "pace on the front", even when that doesn't make sense. You showed the moment perfectly where Movistar had the opportunity to get away with four Ineos riders in their wheel. I just thought of something though. If I were Ineos in that picture, I would try to let the wheel go and let 4 Movistar riders up the road.
Had any team had the numbers Movistar had, they would have ridden to limit their loses to Carapaz. Even though, yes, the other leaders were isolated, there would have to be at least a decent climb to attack, as well as have guts and good legs. GC racing does not happen on flat terrain as they cancel each other out so quickly. Rigo was isolated because EF had ridden Higuita and Powless. So Movistar, just like BEX did on stage 20 of the Giro by riding Chris Juul-Jensen, were just riding their race, it just so happens to be that they had too much firepower that it came out looking bad.
maybe they needed some camera time. if you cannot win anything else, then the goal must be sponsor exposure. if that is the real strategy, then it makes sense when they started pulling. it was the final decisive moments of the stage when everyone would be watching.
End of the day Movistar can do what they want if they want to continue the Beef with Carapaz and his agent. but this is affecting there own performance, just means Pogacar has a few more team members
Can someone explain to me why it is a poor decision for Movistar to chase Carapaz when they're on separate teams? New to watching cycling as a sport so sorry if this is a basica question.
How often do Ineos/Sky put their entire team at the front to pull in a one day race, and then get 0 riders in the top 10? How often does Movistar pull at the front in the Tour and only manage to fatigue their own captain. It is just what they do.....The brainless top of the cycling world.
It's hard to believe a pro cycling team would base it's tactics on revenge & petty score settling but... Johan Bruyneel said recently that Carapaz told Movistar he wasn't leaving the team when he had already signed for Ineos. Things aren't always so black & white but If this is true, then sadly Carapaz may have pasted a big target on his back. I hope the sport of cycling is better than this.
Plain and simple, it was payback to Carapaz for breaking contract. If I'm not mistaken this is not first time Movistar team/directors has done this type of thing.
I don't think Movistar is that unprofessional. They weren't riding after Carapaz, because he left, but because of their goals for this Tour. I don't understand why they have these goals though.

Movistar do a lot of thinking and get the wrong answer quite often. Put it down to the DS is not the greatest tactical thinker. Lots of sports have that problem with a decision maker.
Carapaz betrayed Movistar after he promised he would stay if they would win the Giro. Movistar does not have a rider that can win the Tour for now, so they should forget about him!
If Moviestar is utilizing their team and all that goes with that in terms of tikme, $, and resources just to spite Carpapaz, then they have absolutely lost their minds. And as poor as some race tactics are sometimes within certain teams, I highly doubt that this could have been more than a happy coincidence for anyone within the organization that has anything against Carapaz. They were just playing their best tactic as they saw it in the moment. I really do not think the main goal was to wreck someone else's chances. It was just an unhappy coincidence for Carapaz. But from a tactical standpoint, I do not think it is something that Ineos could have predicted Moviestar would choose to do when sending Carapaz in the move.
@Stefan Bà and at the same time they dragged Pogacar to the finish with fresh legs. Instead, they should have put pressure on Pogacar to pull back Carapaz. These dudes get paid to make pro decisions and amateur ones.
Riding for the Team Classification again, LOL. I don't understand why any team tries to defend their lower GC positions with Pogi still in the group. Let the moves go, and let Pogi burn matches chasing his closest rival on his own. Instead they gave Pogi a free tow to the finish letting him conserve energy, and then today he puts minutes into Mas on the penultimate climb.. Que bobos!
Because Movistar held a grudge against him after he left the team. Movistar was giving him low salary. He was offered higher from other teams the reason he left Movistar. The movistar coach even called him traitor and disgrace and doesn't even want to mention his name. Just saw it in Netflix. "The least expected day" team movistar.
No that's not the truth. They explain more details in S2. Carapaz committed with Ineos before he won the Giro. His agent wasn't truthful about it, making it seem like Carapaz was interested in staying at Movistar/willing to negotiate a new contract. Movistar was willing to drop Landa to keep Carapaz, which is what they did. I heard rumors that Movistar found out the accidently from Ineos, not from Carapaz or his agent. That's some shady game-playing.
And isn't it that Movistar is after the team qualification? Could this be the reason? They have no chance in the main categories and if I recollect correctly they pride themselves on winning the team qualification.
I was thinking that if Movistar were chasing Carapaz just out of spite it was a really bad way to ruin the race and their image as a team. But this video makes me think they just had questionable tactics and maybe consider him a close rival to Mas. I hope so because we want to see a race run properly and what happened at the Vuelta was not good for cycling. Keep the beef off the road please.
movistar were chasing for the sole reason that it was the tactically wrong thing to do. Reject Strategy, Embrace Chaos.

Maybe they hoped to isolate Pogacar ?
