Appalachian Trail Documentary: 23 Ways to Drink in Life on the Appalachian Trail

- Please be warned this video contains stories of an accidental cooking burn and a dangerous water situation. If that would be hard for you to see, you may not want to watch this, or want to skip 30:30 - 32:02 (burn) and/or 1:08:44 - 1:13:50 (water).
After deciding to hike over 2,000 miles on the Appalachian Trail, my goal was to drink in life as much as possible. Through telling you the way I accomplished that, I'll also tell stories from my time on trail, and share stories from my fellow hikers. I hope this documentary shows a fun but honest look at what this experience was like, how community and friendship have immeasurable impacts, and the traditions and common experiences that make the Appalachian Trail so unique.
Thanks again to my fellow hikers, trail angels, my parents, my boyfriend, and those who supported me online!

Brilliant! You captured the essence of the trail. I watched in one go (couldn’t put it down). Beacon, 2023 finisher
Thanks so much!
I meant to watch it in parts but also couldn’t put it down. Maddie is such an accomplished videographer and storyteller. I’m in awe.
Watching this I realize how much I miss you taking us with you on the Trail. Made me "homesick."
Awww! It’s hard to describe how that makes me feel! I hate that you have something you miss but that’s also kinda cool you felt that connected with something I created in the first place!
OMG Maddie this is the best documentary video I've seen so far! LOVED IT SO MUCH!!!!
Wow! Really? Thank you so much!!!
Holly Molly Ranger this was better than I could have ever expected. I have held off watching until I knew I had the hour and twenty minutes to view it uninterrupted. And the format, the editing, the soundtrack and the choice of background music just came together do beautifully. I’m planing to share it online with others like myself who do want to manage the courage to get on trail and Thru Hike the AT at my own pace & style to experience the hiker community, the wilderness, the emotions and hopefully the accomplishment to join the ranks of those completing a Thru zHoke of the Appalachian Trail. Thank you so much. ❤😊 God Bless you .
Yay! Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it!
Maddie…you are one of the BEST storytellers on RUclips. Your editing is superb and the “real” interviews alongside the playful interviews were fun. I especially enjoyed the Flight Attendant section 😂. I enjoyed your hike and this wrap up was icing on the cake.
Thank you so much!!!
Wow, what a great documentary Ranger! Thanks for sharing such an awesome adventure, looking forward to more great videos in the future. Wishing the best that life has to offer for you and Smoke Master.❤
Thank you so much!
Wow Maddie. This was absolutely spectacular. This is the best Appalachian Trail documentary I've seen.
Wow, thank you! 💚💚💚
Ranger you are such a joy (and Smoke too)! I hope when I leave for the trail next month, I’ll have your strength and courage. Thank you for sharing your journey 🙏 Congratulations 🎉!!!
I saw you make videos so I subscribed! Best of luck on your trek! It won't be easy but it will be worth it!
@@BeerinBeautifulPlacesThank you, so happy to have you along for my journey 🙏 and yes, it definitely won’t be easy to get into your elite club but I’m going to do my best🙌👏
Hey Ranger,
this documentary is awesome, and makes me feel in a way it's hard to describe! I thru-hiked NoBo the AT last year, and I've met YOU at Pinkham Notch! I also hiked for more than a day with Tiger, Wild Coyote and Gandalf! Seeing you guys on the trail is like being there again, at least with part of my soul. If you are reading this... I miss you all!
~Trekking Pole
Thanks, Trekking Pole! I’m so glad you recognized so many fellow hikers, I hoped it would be like that for people in our bubble. Really glad you enjoyed the video 💚
1:13:17 This is advice EVERY thruhiker should know about water crossings!!! Thank you Maddie!!! 💚💚💚
A few years back (around 2019) Bob said that he was closing Kincora. It is nice to see this landmark still going.
I had no idea! I'm glad he kept it going too!
Finally had the time to watch this, excellent, you are so talented. Love where you gave instructions to cross the flooded river like a flight attendant gives instructions on the plane, so cute.
Howdy Ranger, this is Sugar Bear. I met you near the Front Royal trailhead as I was entering and you were exiting the Shennies.
I’ve been watching your documentary (taking a break at “the trail provides” section to get to bed) so far, this is one of the best AT documentaries I’ve seen (and I’ve seen a lot). It is a surprising blend of great imagery, humor, honesty, vulnerability, and humility … and more importantly, captures the essence of the trail. Job well done! - Sugar Bear
I remember you! Thank you for watching, Sugar Bear! I'm really glad you enjoyed it, and thank you for the kind words too!
Your documentary, Ranger, was so well filmed, edited with a natural pacing! We follow your journey with your narriration including the interviews throughout! You are a tremendous storyteller through the joyous, humorous, pain, and fellowship on the AT! The music was an additional flavor!
Aww thanks so much! I’ve really tried to do all those things you mentioned and it’s so awesome that you noticed and appreciated them!!!
Wow! Ranger this documentary made an old man cry. I have followed you since you started van life. You are an inspiration to many. I hope you continue to seek adventure through hiking and traveling this beautiful country of ours filled with beautiful people. Thank you for sharing. You truly are “Living a Great Story.”
thank you so much!! 💚
Excellent documentary of your AT journey. Your commentary and editing are spot on. Had the pleasure of watching your hike last year and you captured the entire excitement and challenges of your adventure in this film. Not East to do. Thank you for making this and letting us relive your adventure. Thank you! Tod, Idaho
Thank you so much! It was hard choosing my biggest events that could also be universal experiences aka "ways to drink in life", but now I wouldn't have done it any differently
This was great. We need more young women like you in the world. Keep being you!
Thank you! Will do!
You've left me speechless
Wonderful video!! Your candor, humor, and way with words has delighted this 72 yr old hiker. I'll not walk this thru path now that my physical struggles keep me in check but this well done video journey made me feel like I was [almost] there. Thank you 😘
Awww thanks so much!! I'm so glad!
Well said!
Can't Wait!
Love this video. Capture it perfectly. Great job.
Loved this documentary! I related to a lot of the trail experiences. The side quests, best friends, scary water crossings, mental breakdowns... all of it.
- Lost Child (also class of 2023)
Thank you, Lost Child! 💚
I followed your hike in your short form vidos on IG in real time, so when I heard you were producing this documentary, I was thrilled. This is special! The videography and narration really allow us to feel like we're on the trail with all of you thru-hikers. It was a joy! Thank you.
That's so awesome you felt like you were along with me! That's what I was going for!
You’re a great storyteller. Thank you for taking us along! 🍻
My pleasure! 😊
“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.”(Henry David Thoreau). You, after your epic journey, are now equipped to lay claim to the elements contained in this quote. May they serve you well for as long as you live. Be well, stay safe. 🥾
I love that!! Thank you so much!
Thank you for this documentary...I miss you guys on trail!!!❤
Friday, February 23rd; Thank-you for taking the time to edit and share. Happy Trails! Ross08
Thank you! It was so meaningful for me to create!
Maddie, this was beautiful. You are a natural storyteller. High emotion, sadness and joy. Thanks for sharing with us!
Thank you so much!! 💚
So glad I watch this hike, so enjoyable to see!❤
Such an incredible doc, Ranger. It was such a pleasure following along with your daily updates last year and I can't believe how beautifully you pieced everything together! You're a fantastic storyteller and an inspiration to future hikers. Thanks for letting us be a part of this adventure, and can't wait to see where you have your next beer!
Thank you know much!!!
This video is a lot of fun to watch!… really great job!!
Love this! I followed your journey from day 1 on trail. I enjoyed your weekly videos. Your realness.
I followed your original videos and now this one.The memories you made are just so precious and being able to express it with this video makes it so others can feel it too.Thank you for this!
Wow...This was so well done! I didn't want it to end!
I definitely will be hiking the AT...it probably won't be a thru-hike but definitely sections as i have time. You are my inspiration Maddie! Thank you for sharing your experiences, good and bad. ❤
Wonderful job showing us all of this adventure in this video. My wife and have been watching your channel for some time now. I can only imagine the sense of accomplishment. While we no desire to hike the trail you have motivated my wife and I to someday provide trail magic. Who would of thought sandwiches, soda and other snacks would bring enjoyment to those hiking the trail. In the future I look to your evaluation of another beer on another adventure. Take care
That’s incredible! I’m sure the hikers that receive that will be super happy!
Excellent!! You are so gifted and have true grit!! Thank you for taking me along on your odyssey.
That was truly amazing, I'm so happy to see you and your friends survived the river crossing in Maine that was beyond crazy.
Yeah that was crazy! I hope future hikers will be extra cautious. And thank you for watching, I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
What a wonderful video!!! You did a fantastic job!! Thanks for making this!❤
Love Love Love this! I followed you from before day 1 and was drawn to your video style. You do such an amazing job with your videos and your narration is on point! When I grow up I want to be like you. ;-) Can't wait to see more of your upcoming adventures!

Maddie! I didn’t realize how much I’ve been missing your videos, your voice, your insight, until the very end of this amazing AT documentary! What an achievement! The trail, the weekly videos, and this. I can’t wait to see where adventure takes you and Smoke next. Also, what a thrill to see my name (Marta Rose) in the Patreon credits at the end-I hope more people will consider supporting you soon!
Awesome documentary and totally worth the wait. Thanks for taking us along who aren't able.

Wow Ranger, what a wonderfully entertaining, beautifully put together documentary! Thank you so much for sharing your talents, and journey with us.
Brilliant! I thoroughly enjoyed your story telling. Thank you for sharing ❤️
Thank YOU for watching!
Wonderful! So great to see a lot of the people that I hiked around on trail. You did a great job capturing the trail. Glad I am not the only one that had breakdowns in the whites and southern Maine.
I saw hikingmovie had replied so I had to chime in.Congrats on your completions! I'm going to multi-task and write you both at once. Great job documenting, both ofyou.I starting planning in July 2022. Messed up my knee enough coming down Katahdin to suspend my hike. Spent a week in the rain in going SOBO. Half way through the 100 Mile Wilderness, exited. How beautiful it was. I was so looking forward to crossing paths with your trail families, the red barn and the likes of Bartman as well. Have my tickets to get back in July to continue my hike. Just helped some Maine hikers on the Florida Trail.
@@joeshmoetakesahike3560 so sorry that you got injured so soon in your hike. Hope you are able to get back on trail soon. Going SOBO is so much harder than NOBO. That terrain is so rough. Greyhound
Awesome in every way! Your strength and endurance, the friendships, the beauty of nature, your moviemaking skills. Thanks, Maddie, for letting a non-hiker come along to enjoy this experience vicariously.
Thank you so much!! I've grateful I get the opportunity to share it vicariously, too!!
This was absolutely wonderful! You should get a prize for your great editing. We also watched the whole documentary in one sitting. My hubby (Trig Treks) did 500 miles last year on the trail and he's heading back mid year to do another 600 miles. We've loved following your journey - thanks so much or sharing the good and the tough days. All the best from Jim (Trig Treks) and Robyn in New Zealand.
🎉 I was brought to tears, at multiple times. Sincerely, epic! Well produced, well thought out, loved the interviews, great job.! Be proud of yourself! Youve done ❤️🩹 well
Yay!! I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Maddie, this was fantastic and the hard work you put into it definitely shows. Well done! Took me back to your hike.
Love to you and Smoke

Extremely well done! Watched with the family and everyone loved it!
Yay!! Thank you!!
Loved loved loved the documentary! Great seeing your face and those of the bestest tramily out there! Love, CareBear ❤
Thanks so much for your support, CareBear!
This is the best appalachian trail documentary I've ever seen. So well done. It inspired me to start training for the AT thru hike myself after giving up on the idea a few years ago.
I'm watching now, Maddie. This is great work.
Thank you!!
Wow beautiful scenery ♡ I just started youtube following 2024 hikers. It's still March & everything is brown, cold & soggy. Love your story! ♡
Thanks so much! 💚
This is great. Been watching your vids for a while and this makes me wanna hike the AT even more. Need that type two fun
Yay!! Remember this is six and a half months condensed, though! There were a lot of dull times and bad times that didn’t make it in the video!
Wonderful job! Well written and edited. Thank you
Thank you so much! Both writing and editing (when technology worked with me!) were a lot of fun!
Wow, excellent, it was a nice connection to the hikers and the trail, and a superb display of your dedication and talent
Aww, thank you so much!! :)

Hey Maggs! I’m surprised you remember me, we met so briefly! Thanks so much for watching!!
Great documentary Ranger .....I followed you all the way through your AT videos from day 1 and I am glad I was here for the premier of this hard earned documentary presentation.......!!!!!🥰
Oh that’s awesome! Thank you so much for being a part of it!
That was awesome! What a great summary of your time on the trail, and something you can be very proud of. I really enjoyed the way you told the story, and made the effort to interview the other hikers too. That was great and made it feel much more like a documentary. Like others, I was expecting to split it into sections but I watched it in one sitting, I just couldn't stop 🙂Way to go Maddie!
Thanks so much!!! Glad you enjoyed it!
Well done! I followed your whole journey last year and thought those videos were very good. You put so much personality into this. I loved the interviews, those really put a face on the hike. I have watched some of your other hikes, which were good, but you really nailed telling your story in this production. Well done Maddie! Hi Smokemaster!
Glad you like them!
That was amazing. You did such a great job of editing your clips and putting it all together to make this awesome documentary. I’m so impressed with you and your determination. God bless you Ranger/Maddie. ❤
Thank you so much! ❤️❤️❤️
Very well done... now you have awesome adventures of a lifetime, perfectly documented, describing your thoughts and feelings while they were still fresh.... that in years to come you can look back on and relive again and again, maybe with your spouse... children, and even grandchildren .....and im sure you will have many more happy times to share from future adventures too. Cant wait to see where the road or trail takes you next
Thank you! It definitely gave me some closure to write this all down and process what it added up to

Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you!
This was incredible. This would be so good for someone wanting to do the hike.
Thank you!! I really appreciate your support!
What a FANTASTIC video. I have watched many AT Thru Hike videos and I put yours in the top 3. Well made, very interesting and had me glued to the tv to see what you were going to do next. Well done!!
Wow, thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it!
Very nice and unique take on the genre. I'd say best video of an AT thru-hike I've seen since mancub & kitfox 2012.
Thank you! I've seen so many AT docs, I wanted to do something different to add a little spice!
It’s super inspiring how much perspective and wisdom you gained on the trail. And this documentary is very well produced, the title cards and music and pacing and everything; well done!!!
Thanks so much! Glad you noticed all those little things!
