The reason it aims backwards isn't to take advantage of possible walls, as you say. It's because top-down light gives your subject raccoon eyes. Aiming the light backwards a slight bit causes the bounce to come from slightly behind the photographer, filling in the eye sockets more.
Great job Canon! This looks like an awesome flash. The video reminds me of the Rockwell Retro Encabulator though. ;^)
Hi, I recently got the flash for my EOS 80 (W) camera and I've tried setting it to AI.B and it keeps coming up with 'wide panel' and won't allow it to work. what do I do to allow it to work?

Is your flash's wide panel out? That's the pull-out screen that lets the flash to cover a wide-enough area for wide angle lenses. This panel can't be out when the flash is in AI.B mode. The Speedlite 470EX-AI instruction manual has more info on the wide panel and how to use it on page 35 and you can find a PDF of the manual at canon.us/ruy77

I read something about it not being compatible with wide angles. As a real estate photographer primarily shooting wide (17mm) would I not be able to take advantage of the auto bounce feature? Is there another flash that will be better?

This speedlite has a zoom function to cover lens focal lengths from 24mm to 105mm. Lenses as wide as 14mm can be used when the built-in Wide Panel is deployed. Note that full auto bounce mode (AI. B full-auto) cannot be used, when using the Wide Panel. Details are listed on page 35 of the speedlite manual. Here is a shortcut - canon.us/3HTypJJ

Does it work if I put a magmod filters on it?
Hello Desolo! You can still store bounce positions and use them! Any filters or diffusers on the head may block the distance measurement sensor, causing the auto AI to not work correctly.
Will this work with the Canon M50?
Hi Joaquin! Full-Auto AI Bounce is not available with the EOS M50. However, you can use this feature in the Semi-Auto mode. We hope this helps!

Hi, Shantanu! Your EOS Rebel SL3 can take advantage of the AI.B semi-auto feature on the Speedlite 470EX-AI. The AI.B full-auto feature is unavailable on the EOS Rebel SL3.

The menu and buttons make it the most complicated flash ever as well....
So you make an "automatic, AI" flash for beginners, then festoon it with buttons and options and submens. Madness.
There's only one button you need to press to make it work.

Canon, you really screwed big time by not listening to ATG and die-hard Canon photographers.
You didn't come out with 1/1 mirrorless.
So you came out with this beginner hog battery hungry 470EX AL flash without built-in ATG's TTL 2.4GHz in Master and Slave.
Major flaws that Rudy Winston failed to tell beginners & amateur photographers:
< No ATG Auto2
< No ATG 2,4GHz built-in for Master/Slave
< No ATG 3.5mm or PC Sync Port
< No ATG HV Port
< No ATG USB Port
< No ATG Ext.A
< No ATG Ext.B
< Will not to talk to ATG/Canon/Jinbei's RT
FYI:
Only fool will buy this over the cheap Canon 430EX III-RT.
If you already have ATG/Jinbei/Phottix/Canon 2.4GHz transitter, this will not work.
Better bring along lots of AA batteries, no ATG HV Port for using ATG/Quantum Turbo.
Many Canon photographers will now surly going to jump over to Sony.
Sigma and many lens companies listened to ATG and Samyang to go full speed on making Sony E-Mount lenses.
ATG/Godox have many flashes that have built-in radio ATG's 2.4GHz in Master/Slave for less.
Rudy will brush up your resume, ATG/Sony and ATG/Godox are hiring.

cooloox, I actually use Hasselblad H6D, Red and Phantom Flex 4K with ATG/Jinbei/Interfit/Profoto strobe equipment.
