- YIKES. That's all I can say lately. YIKES!
As always your support and feedback is SO appreciated. The next few weeks of videos will have lots going on, and hopefully this will lead up to a lot of progress for the house and land over the Summer. Hearing your thoughts on things is always a lovely boost and motivation.
Morrigan's Cottage is a 200 year old traditional stone cottage set in the west of Ireland on just under 4 acres. Originally this house would have been used by the local farmers, rented from their British landlords. Dated back to at least the early 1800s, someone has been consistently living here and farming this land since then, up until about 4 years ago when the house was left vacant by the previous owners.

Definitely not what I expected to turn up to, but thankfully crisis over and new crisis to come!
Ignore the rude comment you are doing great and we all appreciate you showing us your story.
@@eettyy12 ah thank you! ❤️
Hi.. greetings from Australia..i live on acres with a septic system. On a regular basis i get a bucket of hot water ( not boiling) with a liberal amount of dishwashing detergent added and tip into toilet bowl.. because you have a very old toilet system and plumbing you probably have a build up of fat ..hot water with detergent does the trick..worth a try..
THANK YOU! I will give that a try! I’m so new to septic systems and old pipes and stuff I have no tricks so I will definitely give this a try, it doesn’t hurt! Thanks for the tip ❤️ also hello to Australia! It’s on my bucket list to visit there one day!
Just watched the video, so sad to see you so deflated. Hopefully the grant will come through soon and you can crack on. You are doing the best you can and that is always good enough. Keep your chin up. My husband and I are gonna be following in your footsteps 🤞 ❤
It was a tough 2/3 weeks at the house that lots of problems made themselves known and the silly grant not being approved meant I couldn’t get them fixed, but mood has changed and it’s onwards and upwards! That’s very exciting that you’ll be going on your own journey with it too, fingers crossed all goes very smoothly ❤️
Aww, I felt for you on this video. I honestly do not know how you are doing this alone. I am grateful to have Sam to bounce things off and can not imagine how stressful it must be at times going it alone...but you are smashing it and overcoming these hurdles. Be proud. ❤
You are too nice thank you! It was a rough August 😂 all the problems made themselves known but onwards and upwards! You and Sam are such a lovely team it’s so nice to watch your progress and the banter you have (and of course all the animals and the kids) ❤️
Hang in there, Mama!! I appreciate you keeping it real, and the honest approach is really the best. You're going to have a lot of those hiccup surprises with an old cottage, but i do understand your frustration. You just want things to be right without all the not so fun suprises. Don't worry, though, one day, you will be sitting on your porch talking all about the old days of putting the cottage together. You are a brave, strong lady and you are going to slay the dragon! Have a nice cuppa and relax and breathe.sit outside and enjoy the clouds or walk around the property for some relaxation. 💚💚💚
Thank you! I think the frustration just stems from having a problem that I’m not allowed fix because the council haven’t processed my application so it’s out of my hands. I think if the toilet problem continues I’ll just have to pay out of pocket and hope for the best that the council don’t exclude me from the grant for getting it done, but it’s less than ideal to find problems and not be allowed fix them 😢 but you’re right, it will get better! My fingers and toes and everything else is crossed that the council get out asap to me ❤️
Great sentiments and advice ❤
@@debrajclarke it really is ❤️
Very relatable!
I was worried the video would come across too negative but I think it’s important to show the good with the bad, and I’m glad it’s relatable!
I admire your integrity. Life can be hard at times. That is reality. If everything went smooth, I don't think we would appreciate the results of our labor as much. And it's ok to have a few tears.❤
Hang in there, it will get better.
Thank you! There was 2/3 weeks at the cottage where everything went wrong and everything seemed so much worse and getting worse! But I think things have turned a corner now ❤️ thank you for the kind words ❤️
It will turn around. I imagine the constant hoping for the grant to come through is a sort of constant disappointment until that happens. I'm wishing you all the best and I know you can get through these harder days. Maybe you need a weekend off? At least one until the grant approval come through, because then it will be go go go as much as you can!
It definitely is just the grant that’s frustrating me! I think the fear of things going wrong but having my hands tied on not being able to fix the problems really sends me into a panic, I can’t fix big problems so they make the house deteriorate more, and if I go ahead and fix them before the grant I potentially exclude myself from qualifying - but hopefully some grant news shortly and I do have a planned break from the house for a weekend this month which will be nice ❤️
@@morrigans_cottage Oh that's so good. You definitely deserve a break!
You're young and strong. Dont give up
Thank you! It was a tough month in the house for August but hopefully now there will be more progress ❤️
It will be so great when you are able to get the pros in to do work. I am sending good thoughts your way that the grant comes in soon. We have had our share of plumbing and electric problems with our house. Plumbing companies love our neighborhood. ❤
Oh no, it seems to be the common consensus that plumbing and electrics are what really stress people with their houses! I am also manifesting some news on the grant so all our fingers and toes are crossed ❤️
A plumber does most of the heating so I would get him first.
Hiya James! Yes they are top of the list! Hopefully will be able to get a plumber in asap!
My husband is a roof layer and I showed him your toilet piping and he said it should be replaced and not done well. That is not good news that it stopped working but hopefully you get grant approval soon so you can get started. Great video update
Thank you! No it was not great to turn up and have a broken toilet, I did hear back from the council yesterday who basically just said they’re still processing the application and would contact me with an inspection date… but I am forever hopeful it will be sooner than later 😂 you don’t happen to be based in Ireland?!?! I need a roofer 😂
@@morrigans_cottage We are in the US otherwise I would send him to you to help
You must be Peee'd off! Pun aside, I feel for you, it so frustrating that you can't get things fixed, replaced etc until the grant comes through. When I bought my home several years ago, it had been renovated by previous owners but Murphys Law...flat roof extension leaked, toilet need replacing, then another went shortly after and then we had cowboy builders, I could go on and on. Eventually got a fantastic roofing company who I cannot recommend highly enough. Hang in there and keep your eyes on finished goal, you will get there. Consider yourself hugged from FF and meself❤
@@bigmama2135 thank you and big hugs back from me Morri and Bainne! I kinda knew the toilet wasn’t great but was surprised to find the problem and also just living on my nerves that if anything does completely go, I’m in no position to fix it yet because the grant is SO SLOW!!!!! But thankfully the toilet seems to have righted itself for now, and hopefully the grant will come through soon! I’m glad you got your home sorted out, homes are really the most stressful thing 😂❤️
Aisling
Just to let you know that what you are experiencing is part and parcel of a renovation project.
Not sure what is directly outside the wall the toilet is beside but that waste pipe should be going directly out. You should hold off from ripping any more plaster until a builder has inspected the house. One thing is if there are no major structural cracks in the house and it hasn't been renovated in the last 30 years ...then it obviously is well settled and should be fine.
You should definitely get a farmer neighbour to cut that grass as a half hour would have it cut..
There is a lot of work to do but look at all the space you have, inside and out, and its all yours!
I know I’m very very lucky!
Aisling
You could try and get a couple of horses in and they would trample and eat the grass and you could then see if there are any rocks obstacles in the fields.
That’s a good idea too! I’ll definitely chat to the guy, I have someone coming this weekend who might be able to give me an idea on it :)

Oh well Knickers to that, for the love of .. I do know the last house which was well water through out did show the water level up a bit when the rain was heavy, like when is it not, ?but we didn't have any problems, but like you said it could be the bend has just backed it up from time gone by. That drip does look like from the pipe against the wall, , but you will no doubt know whats what by now. still annoying and I guess if you had someone to travel down with at times at least you can give out between you as makes it half the annoyance. Any way you have us lol, I wonder if when you get the toilet done new would it be better placed facing towards the shower, as that is an outside wall Yes ??? As always I leave you with hopes of good news soon and hugs to you girls xxxxx Dede xxx
Hiya Dede! How are you? The rain has been shocking lately hasn’t it! And the weather has definitely gotten cooler! I haven’t actually fixed the toilet problem yet, it’s still a mystery but at least it isn’t giving me too much trouble at this exact moment (because I’m in Dublin and don’t have to worry 😂) it’s all a learning curve and it’ll get there in the end, but this came on the back of 2 weeks of annoying news! Hopefully turned a corner now though ❤️ much hugs and love to you from me and the girlies ❤️
I'm sorry about the plumbing problems but it's a good plan to get a new bathroom and the heating sorted as a priority and then you'll be good to go, the rest can be done at leisure. You're going to have lots of highs and lows but in my experience absolutely nothing ever goes completely smoothly, there's always something! It's just Murphys Law😅. It will all get sorted.❤
I wish Murphys law was not a thing! But onwards and upwards like you said there’s the ups and downs but better days ahead! The grant has me frustrated that I’m unable to fix anything yet but hopefully grant news coming soon! Thank you for the kind words and for all the support you give me ❤️
Hi Ashling when installing a toilet , make sure it is a plain low leaves toylet and sisters , they give least problems
kind regards Sean
Thanks so much Sean, I very much appreciate the tip as I’m clueless about the plumbing!!
Hang in there missis, your hard work will pay off in the end.
Thank you! As long as the toilet keeps working a little longer it’ll be all good!
How do you eat an elephant - one bite at a time. And you're doing it. You're just amazing, the way you are chipping away at all the challenges, facing them head on. Keep plodding on. You'll achieve your dream eventually, and you'll be really proud that you did.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate the kind comment and motivation! You’re right one bite at a time and we’ll get there ❤️
Aisling don’t be so hard on yourself…you are doing this on your own,be proud of yourself, there will be more downs than up’s at this stage…
Once they have been out to survey the house for the grant you will begin to see the light….keep your chin up,it will all make you stronger!☘️👍
Thank you so much for the pick me up ❤️ it’s very appreciated, it was a hard couple weeks at the house - everything seemed to be going wrong - but hopefully we’ll turn a corner here soon and the council will finally come out 😅💚
You're doing great!
Myself and my husband built our house by direct labour. Everything goes at a snail's pace except your brain 😵💫 Planning permission, County Council, providers, family, weather etc ect...will drive any sane person to the edge😂 It took us a few years to get there. One day you will be sitting at your own fire in your own house and looking around you, and saying...I did this!
Thank you so much for giving me a reminder of the end goal! It’s nice to hear from someone who’s on the other side of it! It’ll get there in the end right 🥲❤️
@@morrigans_cottage 💯
plumbing doesnt look good you will be right to replace it when you get grant. thank you for sharing
I know it’s definitely not in good shape, it’ll have to all be replaced I think!
I know that this problem was weeks ago, however, if you need an impromptu toilet plunger in the future a traditional style floor mop works very well, just pump it up and down!
That is such handy advice to know thank you! I never would have thought of a mop with it! I’ll definitely
Store that nugget of info!
Normally that waste pipe should be going down through floor directly behind the toilet not on the side looks like there isn't enough of a fall in that pipe which could be causing your back up there also should be a manhole outside the house in the vicinity of the bathroom or in the vicinity of the septic tank might be worth opening them up checking if there is a back up there aswell to me the way that pipe is located behind the toilet is definitely an issue.
Thank you for that tip! When I’m down on Saturday I’ll check for the man hole, pretty sure I know where it is in the garden! I also thought the way it went at an angle into the wall looked wrong but I haven’t a clue so I’m happy to hear my thought was probably right! Thanks a mil for the advice!
@morrigans_cottage those old cottages when build never had plumbing everything is added in after but it's strange to the way that waste pipe is turning away to the side of the toilet maybe might have to actually move the toilet to suit the location of that pipe my advice is to get a plumber to look at it.
Absolutely, the plan is to repipe and refit the entire bathroom anyway so I’ll definitely see if they can move it to a better spot so the piping can be less bendy!
Welcome to the world of old house plumbing. I hope at some point you have the means to have a professional plumber replace the whole system. I have been fighting with plumbing issues for 40 years in my old house. It isn't fun. Good luck and hang in there. You'll get it figured out in time.
Oh no that can’t be easy fighting with the plumbing! Once the grant is approved (hopefully) I’ll be getting a plumber out for sure! Gotta get it all stripped and replaced! Thanks a mil for the advice and kind words
I’m praying things start to get better for you. I really enjoy watching your videos because you do keep it real. Life isn’t all good and fine. You do have bumps in the road and you just keep going. Thank you for keeping it real. 🌸
Ah thank you so much for the kind comment and for following along on the journey! It’s definitely a rollercoasyer but my fingers are crossed for some good
Progress for a while lol! ❤️
Rookie homeowners mistake - If you own a toilet, you must own a plunger! I've given many of them to my first time owner friends. If you need one, NOTHING else will do.
I know you’re totally right!! I thought I had a plunger but I must not have bought one! But I’ll never be making that mistake again!!
Take care of yourself, you will get there we are all behind you. Please don't let yourself become overwhelmed by this project......
Thank you I really appreciate hearing that ❤️
Next you have plumbing problems with your toilet try couple bucket warm/ hot water down the toilet if you have hard water put vinegar(white) in back of the toilet tank
Oh that’s good to know about the vinegar! I do have very hard water so I’ll give that a go this weekend!! Thank you ❤️
Toilets are great till they aren't 😆 I'm so glad it's sorted - no wonder the plumbing is a priority for you, Aisling. Surely the grant approval cannot be too far off now 🙏 what you have achieved so far with the land is incredible. I am so impressed with how hard you work. Hugs to you and the girls ❤
Hello! Big hugs back to you and Kizzy ❤️ slowly getting there and my fingers and toes are crossed so hard that news will come this coming week on the grant 😅😅
So frustrating for you ! Really looking forward to seeing some positive work being done when the professionals finally get in there !
It’s definitely frustrating, and I was SO cranky and frustrated but I’ve definitely calmed down now and accepted what I can’t control! Fingers crossed good news soon though!
New loo, new piping, seals, new waste oultlet..... and a plumber. No other answer. That whole area is done, done, done. i feel your pain. I would say, that you remind me of me as an anxious renovator in the past. There are things to just step away from and pay someone to sort, and that is one of them. Breathe. You're doing a great job.
Thank you!! Definitely full bathroom needs redoing, all pipe work etc as well! Hopefully my county council will be in contact in the next few weeks so I can finallllly get the work done!!
@@morrigans_cottage I did a self build with direct labout here on my own with a gang of pretty disrespectfull builders. Lived in a van with my two dogs. Remember it now as very happy if stressy. One thing I have learned is to park some problems. Sum them up as out of your skill set,and just park the problem. It's a good way to take the pressure off. Again, well done.... it's going to be alright. Trust me. :)
@@kyarichards2894 it’s really nice to hear from someone who’s on the other side of it, even if not the exact same situation it’s good to hear that and get the advice so thank you for sharing ❤️
@@morrigans_cottage You are welcome. I actually ended up writing about building for a living! These days will end up being treasured times. you're a warrior. :) Will follow your story with interest.
Hey Aisling (apologies if I spelt incorrectly) I'm really enjoying your videos and watching the progress. I hope your grant comes thru sooner rather than later. Seeing as there is a housing shortage in Ireland, have you considered renting out a room to maybe a plumber/builder/heating engineer to help you initially with immediate problems and come to an arrangement about costs etc. You might also be interested in some other RUclips channels who are in a similar position and who have purchased properties in Ireland. One is "The Irish Homestead" and the other one I watch is "Camper Vibe". Both are enjoyable and seem to offer lots of advice and help to each other. I wish you good luck with the progress
You absolutely got my name spot on :) it could be an option to rent a room, I’m quite remote but still only 7/8 mins from a town so maybe I could get someone in and make some kind of arrangement! I LOVE camper vibe and the Irish homestead, I’m learning so much from them both!
Best of luck to you. If you do rent out a room, be aware of the tenancy agreement you offer so that you are protected as a landlord. When I rent out a room, I offer a "Lodger Agreement" tenancy which gives protection against paying income tax and if things don't work out allows a landlord to evict a tenant without going through the legal/court system. However, that's here in the UK so it might be different in Ireland.
🙂
Regarding cutting the Rushes. We have a few more acres to deal with (32) so we are using a towed flail mower behind a quad bike to shred everything in its path to dust.
Some areas, like you, we cut with a brushcutter. Although we use a heavy Stihl petrol one with a 3 point blade. With rushes, you have to keep at it, unfortunately. But they do get thinner. The first year we struggled to get through it with the quad bike and mower. The second cut the same year was easy and next year easier yet. But doing it all with a Parkside brushcutter will be a lot of work. I do reccommend investing in 2 sets of 8AH batteries when they get back on offer.
Oh gosh I don’t know how you keep up with 33 acres! That’s really good to know about using a quad and flail mower, I’ll definitely look into sourcing that and will keep an eye out for second hand! It’s nice to know that there’s light at the end of the tunnel with the rushes! I am hoping to get the drainage fixed so that I can get the land to be better quality and hopefully no rushes! Thank you again for the tips!
Beaucoup trop de frais pour un résultat tout à fait incertain.
It’ll all be ok in the end!
@@morrigans_cottage je vous le souhaite, vous le méritez en tout cas.
