I am just 16... My father being in the defence... He was posted to Chennai... The thing I observed there was people there are very conservative... They don't like girls wearing jeans and tshirt or dresses... If a 2 yr old girl is wearing a dress the parents themselves make her wear leggings... I was quite taken aback abt the thought process of the people... I am not telling all people r like that in Chennai... To some extent yess they judge you when you jeans top... Skirt ka toh sawal hi paida nahin hota... I myself have an experience... I was wearing jeans and top and roaming... Not even a crop top it was oversized tshirt and jeans... Jj went with my father to buy something from the market... Some ladies... Were staring at me... More like judging me for wearing jeans and tshirt... I could understand what they were speaking abt me with each other... Which was quite shocking... The problem is Women don't support women... I mean I was just 12 yrs old that time... What dk u expect a 12 yr old to wear? Salwar kameez? Seriously... The child at thatcage would love to choose want he or she wants to wear rather than having alot of ristrictions... Its kind off odd... People should understand that there should be freedom to where whatever that particular person wants to... And stop judging for once... If women only stare and say stupid things then men will obv try to do something na... This is not only Chennai or Tamil Nadu... It for whole India... People need to be a lil more open minded when it comes to girls ka clothings...

Should get matured a little bit. Learn law of attraction between two sex. First of all if u say ,u wear jean with top or any modern clothing ,it's ur freedom. So y do men don't have freedom to watch ? Eventhough I dont support physical abuse and staring a women.
But women should understand,we were brought up in a society where our ancestors have maintained certain dignity for women and respect them. But nowadays for men ,women is just a object either pay her for sex or fuck off . She has no values in the society.

Chennai is like 5000 times safe than most north Indian cities. Its a very traditional society. It they see you wear different clothes, men women both they will kinda give you judgemental look but won't ever come and say something uncomfortable to you....been living in Delhi NCR for 11 years now and lived in Chennai before this for 5 years. I have seen woman in Chennai work till 11:30 in night and go to work at 4 am when its dark. In delhi women are hardly present in public places, its just men and men everywhere and its very uncomfortable and unsafe. So yes, Chennai is safe for women.

    Hello Guys,
I have mixed opinion with this!
I have been in many night outs at chennai, even with my female friends. But, we haven’t encountered any of the scenarios as you mentioned.
I agree that people at the sub urban trains (not at chennai metro) used to stare, Even we guys had afraid of getting looted, especially during peak crowds and late nights as well.
I like to say my perspective, In this video we can also assume that the people may stare by looking at the camera she was holding.
Adding to that, Coming across a modern woman at chennai metro is very common. But not at the sub- urban trains. This may also attract a lot of on-lookers.
Hence, I conclude that it may take some time for people to totally ignore a woman who is out at late nights.
But for this sake I won’t term the chennai is not safe. It is safer than many and safest to a huge extent than many.

One thought which comes in my mind seeing one of ur comment that men n women both are not safe is very much true but not totally fair as I believe men n boys are grown up in such a mentality that "KOI UNKA KYA HI BIGAD LEGA ". OR. KAUN KYA HI LEGA HAMARE SE " until this kind of thinking is there I guess we aren't safe anywhere ....

When an item song (in which women objectives as tandoori chicken and so on..) releases then we groove listening that. If we dont raise our voice against that then we dont have right to question the mental for general public because a person's behaviour is the reflection of what he/she consumes. I took only one example of item songs. And many of us using Instagram these days. No one is unware how a girl objectify herself there. There are various aspects which constitute the mentality of the person. It will be unfair if we only consider the result without thinking upon the reason.

Did you noticed even a women stared her!!! Problems are everywhere and for everyone there is no gender, as a men even I faced a same situation in my teenage. So before doing such things she should understand the ground reality. Even wearing underwear is comfortable for me can I roam around the city? Every state have own culture. so outsiders should respect that the same way she can’t do this in Bihar or Chhattisgarh even if she have bouncers with her. She just scripted their entire video. My fellow friends having shop in urban square she asked for interview with many women’s in Hindi and everyone avoided and later she asked for English only few answered in that few she added.
And one more thing she went with gang of her friends in all the places and she created the scene in the local train. Am not saying chennai is safe always but the way she portrayed is nonsense thing.

1.) youre filming in public transport. Yes... When you film in such places people will look at the camera atleast for 5 sec to see whats going on.. when you turn the camera, people will look at it for sometime
2.) its south india : Yes, people in south dont wear small clothes and prefer full clothes... They dont like anyone wearing shorts small clothes.(Be it a boy or a girl).. i myself experienced this...
The dressing style doesnt match south india style... Thats why they are looking so strangely on you... Next time wear their cultural dress and match them if you dont want strange looks...
I was born in south so i can tell you... Second of all People in public transport ( mostly) get curious by seeing camera and something because most of them are middle class and dont know much... So they are curious and thats why they are looking...

Hi. I really apologise and feel bad for the situations you'd faced. I'd been in Chennai for a decade, and here's what I observed.
Chennai has many daily-wages & slum workers hailing from different towns of the state. And especially during nights after 11PM, the most you could see on the roads & trains are those people and most of those people would be drunk. Thus the combination of slum workers + drunk clearly specifies it is not safe, no matter which city is that. A corporate employee being drunk vs an average slum worker being drunk, there's a lot of difference. I wouldnt say all, but most. Chennai has a lot of slum workers. Thus this specifies and justifies the situation you'd faced. However, I'm so sorry for what you'd overcame.

First of all it was bad to see that guy behave that way. And just so you know, even in the most developed countries like the US, things like this tend to happen. People of this sort are always going to be there wherever we go and not just chennai. People are staring at you in the train because people who usually travel in those trains are mostly from a low economic background but majority will not do any harm to you. Seeing women with very modern dressing is not very common for them. I agree that a girl have the rights to dressup the way she wants and not be treated like that. But a girl should also know where to dress how. In chennai you can wear these kind of dresses comfortably in some places but not in all places. As women we must protect ourself first, even the way women sit wearing short dresses matter a lot. It is an etiquette to know how to sit when we wear short dress. Let us not just wait for the society to change. Let it change but from our part, let us wear the dress we want but make sure we follow proper dress etiquette while we sit and move around so even if we wear short dress we know how to sit. And make sure if the dress we wear is apt for the place we are going. Let us focus on what we can control till the society changes

This is also Universal truth. So dont make it your prestige issue. You don't have anything extra special that the next girl on road won't have. It's natural for any men to stare at girls. Making gestures at you was definitely wrong but I guess he could have mistakenly thought of you as some sex worker roaming around at 2 AM, with skin revealing dress and staring at them. Even that woman was staring at you, did you do something to make people look at you? Birds flutter around each other so that their counterpart notice and then they can engage in mating. Men will always notice you and your body language if you are sending any frequency of heat buildup within you and then will resonate at same frequency and reciprocate the same. This is it.

Qur'an 33:59 tells Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) to ask his family members and other Muslim women to wear outer garments when they go out, so that they are not harassed: O Prophet! Ask your wives, daughters, and believing women to draw their cloaks over their bodies.
That's why Islam is the best religion in the world. ❤

Appear local, in native apparel, then try. I will be curious to know the outcome. Cherry picking is not a social experiement. Wrong timing, wrong dressing, wrong gestures etc. might attract wrong response. To be honest no place in this world is safe with wrong body language, with wrong outfits in the wrong hours of the day.

Kudos to you doing this and showing us the reality. But in my 14 years of working and travelling across various cities , I did not feel the need to go out at 2 AM and prove a point. Maybe this a journalism point of view, but I would choose my personal safety over anything else, irrespective of whether the place has a good or a notorious reputation.

Thankyou for documenting your experience and sharing it with us. It takes so much. It’s high time we start talking about this on large scale.
This is the ground reality, happens to every woman of this country, not just in Chennai, in every part and corner of the society. Not just at 2 am but at any hour. This is what women go through in their everyday lives, and sad reality is we have become accustomed to and normalised this, as there seems to be no scope of improvement.
I refuse to engage with men trying to victim blame as they are themselves the part of the problem and they always find ways to dismiss women’s experiences.
