I know I’ve said this before but, WOW! You really pack so much practical information into your posts. Thank you so much for all of your efforts. You don’t have any “fluff” or unnecessary content yet you present it with such warmth and sincerity that it makes me feel like I’m listening to advice from a caring friend. Those notes in front of you that you were referring to, would it be possible for you to make them available in a newsletter?
Thank you for your kind words. I don't currently have any other type of "media" that I am putting out other than my videos. I am so busy, that I am not sure I could fit anything else on my plate! Honestly, my notes just included the varieties, days to maturity and what type of recipes I am making with what I am planting.
I freeze dry nearly all of my leeks, and store them on the shelf in canning jars. They turn out beautiful, and I just dump a couple of handfuls in soups, stews, and stirfries. Broccoli freeze dries into a wonderful shelf-stable product, too. I have not tried to freeze dry cabbage yet, but love how spinach, kale, and collard greens turn out. I love the fall and winter garden even more than the spring and summer garden. No bugs! I do miss tomatoes and peppers, but I have them freeze dried, or canned, to enjoy all winter. Happy Gardening! Thanks for sharing what you have planted!!
Wonderful! Thank you so much for the little push I needed to get some fall seeds started. I wasn’t going to do it because I’ve been so frustrated with my summer garden (and busy in other areas), but I think I will now. So thanks again for the nudge!🙏May God keep you and your family healthy and safe
Thank you so much for all you post!! I think I live close enough to try to follow your timing and appreciate all the detail, variety info... (I’m in the Spartanburg area.) Last year was my 1st veg garden attempt. It was comical but I learned a lot and now have a basic structure, beds,.. This year I intended to focus on timing and amendments. Cancer reared its ugly head in May and that has me off my stride but I’m enjoying your posts and taking lots of notes. My dil helped me turn over 1 bed this week. Still hoping to have at least one fall bed. I’m going to do my best to get some seed under lights this week b4 going back in hospital Friday. Thanks again.
I am so sorry to hear that you are sick. But I am so encouraged that you are going to try and get some seeds started even with all you have going on! If you don't get to start them, there is nothing wrong with buying them from a local nursery. Always ask for a discount:). Every year I learn so much as well. I've had some epic failures, but have had so many more successes. You are in my prayers:)
I do love the winter as well! It is much slower even though we still garden through most of it. I can only grow citrus in pots that need to be moved in during the winter months, but if I had a high tunnel.......I could do so much more:)
I wish I could grow all the cabbage you do because we love it and I would love to have it through the winter. I will have to look at more varieties I might be able to grow in succession up north.
Read " The Winter Harvest Handbook " by Eliot Coleman. He grows in Maine using frost fabric and a makeshift tunnel covered in greenhouse plastic. He does so much for being so far north!
You are so inspiring! I love all the dry beans in the background, they are beautiful. I’ve been losing my momentum in the garden. We are so dry here with no rain in sight, zone 7a (E Tn). I don’t have irritation so it’s all hand watering(30 raised beds and about 30 pots of herbs etc.) which I’ve had to do most of the summer as we only had some rain in July. For Fall I planted carrots but none came up, I’m sure I didn’t keep them moist enough. You have motivated me to try carrots again, I watched your other video so may try that method. I have golden beets started, but also want a bed of red beets. I’m going to tear my green stalk apart and amend and plant greens and lettuces and try to keep it watered so they germinate. If I can find any starts for brassicas I may do a few, but my big box store starts were not in the best shape and they were still asking full price when I looked , again it’s been hot and dry. Thanks for the little push on Fall gardening. I really enjoy and look forward to your videos.
We have been super dry as well. I remember watering by hand before we had irrigation. It was so time consuming. The irrigation is so nice because I can program it to come on for longer times when I am germinating seeds. You could try starting seeds indoors and letting them get a bit established and then planting out. Have you tried any nurseries for fall starts? A lot of times, they are cheaper and you can negotiate a deal if you ask:). I know exactly what it is like to loose motivation......I am so glad that this gave you the push to plant some more:)
Oh my friend! I’m from Knoxville and I SO feel you on the no rain. I know Helena devastated so many places so I hate to even speak these words (please forgive me ) but I was so grateful for the rain. This summer was brutal and I don’t have near the amount of beds you do! Also I don’t know if you are familiar with three rivers market but iswas able to buy my carrots already sprouted and ready to go in the ground as well as my broccoli, cabbage, and onions. I’m a fairly new gardener and am not quite ready to grow from seed yet but my carrots did AMAZING as did my beets which I also bought as little sprouts.
@@ComplicatedSimplicite awesome! Yes, I am familiar with Three Rivers Market, it’s a little far for me, but I do enjoy shopping there when I get over that way. I did manage to get seeds out for radish, lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard and bunching onions. Not sure about the bunching onions, but I’m trying at least. Gave up on carrots for this season, will try again early Spring.
Thank you so much. Not sure what I am going to grow this autumn. Just cannot make up my mind. Being on the carnivore diet, growing veg is mostly for other people.
Some of the cabbage that I started later in the season did not do well in the winter. My earlier starts did fantastic. Do you think maybe the timing was off? I start mine inside around July 15, and plant out the 3rd week of August.
@@MorganHillFarms thanks. Micro greens and lettuce are some things I want to grow over the winter inside. I want to see what others are doing that works for them. As a side note. I’m in total agreement with the things you’re talking about lately. I’m praying people have their eyes open.
You can still start from seed but you have to do it asap. We are about 4-5 weeks from our first frost so we are at the end of the window for direct seeding:) I am in zone 7b-8a South Carolina, and our first frost is anywhere from Oct 15-26. If you have the ability, I would cover them with frost fabric when your temps start to produce frosts…..just to give them a little extra time to get their roots well established before temps really drop:)
That is a good question. I have yet to find something that has this type of information. I mostly find my recipes by searching online by the ingredients I have coming in. The ones we love, I print and put in a binder. So sorry I am not more help!
I had tried to direct sow a lot of what you mentioned (red acre, bulls blood, etc.) but my seedlings keep dying due to the crazy weather changes in my area. I'm not sure if I'll get anything going. 😭
Started several different fall crops on September 11 and as of today, quite a few have germinated. I’m so excited to get my fall garden going.
That is great! I love it when things start to sprout. It always feels like such an accomplishment:)

I bet a freeze dryer makes preservation sooooo much easier. Someday I will breakdown and get one:)
Great idea; thank so much for sharing that tip.

I'm in zone 5a, the only reason I would move south is for citrus. I do slightly envy all the year round gardening but I also love my off season.

Fantastic chanel for inspiration growing food
Thank you!

Wow, thanks! You are so welcome:)
I’m new to the fall and winter garden. This is great advice. Thank you.

I'd love to see your recipe for unstuffed cabbage roll casserole. Always love your videos!

Thank you, very informative- in what zone are you growing please?
We are in 8a but honestly, due to previous winter temps, we are more of a 7b:)
Another informative video. Thanks! If you can would you do a video in your micro greens setup?
That is one that I have on my list. It isn't super fancy, but it works great:)

Is it too late to plant cabbage from seed? What is your growing zone?
I'm wondering that as well

Where do you buy the ragged Jack seeds, please?
Botanical interest - They may be listed as Red Russian Kale
Question- what’s a good farm to table cookbook that’s divided up by seasons?

@@MorganHillFarms This attempt (#3) is indoors under grow lights. Fingers crossed. 🤞
Where do you buy your seed?
I get some from True Leaf Market MIgardener, Hoss and botanical interest. I do get some hybrids from Johnny seeds as well.
