Bought one of these and took it out today, made a random wire antenna with 16g speaker wire onsite. Used my telescoping mast and made a 211 mile contact on 40m with it, my signal was 5x9. Very impressed with it so far!
Hi matey. I have produced a video how to get the external microphone to work. It's in my playlist. It's a matter of swopping a couple of wires over inside microphone. Cheers from old George PS I don't think it's for cat control but firmware update only.
Watch my video, How to get VOX working. I uploaded a few days ago.
Hooked mine up in my kitchen today on a whim, ran the coax cable out my back door and literally tossed my homemade speaker wire random antenna out in the yard only putting the end of it up on a table umbrella on my back deck, probably 8 feet above ground level. Turned it on and heard a lighthouse on the air activation from Lake Michigan, put out my call and he came back, I had to repeat my call 4 or 5 times phonetically for him to get it all, but he did get it. Amazing for such a mediocre attempt at erecting a simple homemade antenna. Heard many other stations across the band even from europe. These things are amazing. 5 watts, imagine if I had the antenna set up favorably??
how do you measure SWR on the radio?
@@valetech8751 в режиме CW он показывает КСВ антенны.
@@valetech8751 Put on CW mode and transmit, will show the SWR on that frequency.
Great video thanks - I just ordered one of these - $27 AUD. I thought to myself, "I've got nothing to lose for $27" but your video has given me great confidence to experiment with TX audio and see what it can do. As you said - a great little radio to put in the backpack with a simple long wire and you can throw it in a tree and try for a few contacts.
which one exactly did you buy for 27 AUD?
@@valetech8751 It was advertised on Banggood for $27 AUD which I thought was odd. They showed the radio and described the radio but I only received the microphone and very oddly a travel adaptor for the power supply which I also did not receive. I only lost $27 AUD but lesson learned. If I do fork out $200 AUD, it won;t be with Banggood, I'll found a more reputable supplier.
Receive audio was actually quite decent. Would be interested to see an A to B comparison with another HF radio on RX.
No 160 meters, doesnt have filters...
Pa Bias Min = 0
Tx drive at least 4 with internal mic.
Pa Bias Max depends on voltage on Irf510, never over 2.7.
Use the best SWR, or power will go down.
UART works with TTL, program firmware with USBisp oR USBasp or Arduino programmer.
I/Q can be taken from chip to use it as an SDR
I have IRF520.....10watts
I/Q can be taken from chip to use it as an SDR? i would like to know more info maby a video
More information on this little radio would be greatly appreciated.
How big is the battery, how much current does it require to operate, what was the non distorting power output on each band, how much does it weigh, and the all important qu - what is the chance that the one I buy will be anything like the one you bought?
Great Vid. Just curious... Did you change the volume to 11 for a particular reason other than to make it louder? Such as a nod to something in the past?
As of 9 Oct 23, these things cost $35. Given the world situation, every ham should have a portable HF transceiver. This one is worth having for your bugout bag. Thanks for the video.
Would you mind sharing a link for that price? Wouldn't mind getting a couple more. I received mine today, definitely want to get it up and running on digital. Wish there was a manufacturer to contact for proper pinouts. The tiny usdx was stupid easy with the android version of fldigi, ft8 doesn't interest me
US$138.99 on Banggood, $171.56 Amazon with mic. Where can I find one for $35 bro?
@@AdamosDad AliExpress had them. But who knows if they still do. Things are hit or miss with them.
Yeah these are absolutely not 35 bucks anywhere unless it was bought on some fluke. You can find the sdr receiver version of these for around that cheap but usually a little more. These clones of tr usdx are 120 to 200
@@bowbreaker1if you don't know. These are clones of (tr) usdx by DL2MAN. If you are interested in pin outs and such you could consider getting one of the real ones and talking to him directly.
Nice review. I do a lot of FT8 and the trouble you had getting CAT commands to work would scare me away from the radio.
It has better audio than many of the Chinese clones out there.
Please let me know how the CAT control and digital modes work if you get tested! I have this radio and want to do digital modes with it and not sure how to get working. Thanks for the video!
Yes, also very interested!
I have it, works perfect for digital modes and CW but the TX voice quality suffers on SSB from distortion. Audio from speaker is good. I use it for FT8 and JS8CALL and have made hundreds of contacts up to 7000 kms away with nothing more than a random wire and tuner. Backlight off option doesn't work (backlight always on) and there is no charge or battery level indicators and the included mic is garbage. Battery life is long (big battery). You can select 160 and 6 meters but they don't work. There is 9 working bands not 8. Power is best on 40 and 20 meters (10 watts) and it doesn't get warm. It does get warm on frequencies higher than 14 mhz and power output drops significantly.
Thanks for the info!
Not bad but shame it doesn't have AM mode. A few AM nets out there on 80m including even the RSGB news plus 10m AM activity which is getting busy now...
It does have AM and will transmit AM.
@@PRStoetzer oh really full 5w carrier ?
I would love to know how well it works with CW. I would like to hear how the CW filtering works.
Where do one find a user manual for those transceivers?
I have three Questions
1. Is there a manual available?
2. How do you know when the internal battery needs to be charge?
3. When transmitting what does a high frequency tone in the speaker me?
Nice! I'm really curious how clean the transmit signal is and how cheap or good the internal parts are. Great video as always. 73 N2SCD
Matt, do I need to send you a QRP-Labs QDX Digital Transceiver to test on HF digital modes? Not kidding, I've got a couple extras and I could sure send you one.
That’s one transceiver I have not had the pleasure of testing yet. Feel free to drop me an email sir, thank you.
please try to find a good combination with this
So now in mid 2024 are these brick versions the best ones or the red corner ones?
Perfect shtf radio, to put in a faraday cage and leave it. Not the top of the line hf radio but rechargeable internal battery, capapble, small, easily portable for a myriad of different applications and not like spending $1k for something to stick in a metal box "just in case".
I don't see swr displayed anywhere on mine during tx. just arrived today and battery won't charge or won't power the tcvr. battery has 7.6vdc and measures 12.4 when charging. xsdr does work from the battery charger and the power supply.
Put on CW mode, transmit, and the SWR will be displayed.
Any updates on this little radio?
Do you know what the UART port is for? Can you grab the IQ and use SDR software?
Does the mic have to be a certain impedence
I found one on Amazon that had a mic with it, they showed the mic plugged into the key port.
I don't know if this was done by the photographer, or that's where it goes, after all the labeling
on the radio might be incorrect.
The mic that is supplied doesn't work, but it can be re=wired to work with this radio. Just search "USDR mic wiring".
@@MagicRoosterBluesBand Thanks!
Anyone ever figure out cat control. On the small usdx ive used a baofeng aprs cable cone ted to android tab with andflmsg. I guess ill have to take my spare and chop into it. Is there a manual online anywhere that shows the pinouts?
I've just come across these but want to know more information on the sdr side of things?
Thanks!
Hello Dear Colleague do you think we can get a panadapter working with this radio and control the frequency with the cat? 73's de ct2kfq
cool this little thing!!!
i love this thing=p
another sale pried from my wallet, thanks for the excellent review matt, having great RST reports using these with my ogs=50w 👍👍👍👍
Not without a few problems but I have 2 x of these radios and great for outdoor use. Have you watched my vidddds cheers from George
I have one, not a bad radio
Hello, this transciever can use on digi mode ?tnx
In theory yes, but I think some folk have trouble getting the CAT control to work, me included!
If I understand correctly, the microphone that came with the TRX didn't work?. Have you figured out what the problem is?
What is the, honest, conclusion about this TRX?
I have produced a video in my playlist regarding microphone fault. Look it up cheers from old George

Hi. Is the a (tr)uSDX radio from DL2MAN ?
ruclips.net/video/9aI36gEn0m0/видео.html
Nope. Knock off and no software support from DL2MAN
Dl2MAN hat den usdx NICHTvon Grund auf selbst entwickelt!
Wspr machine
Is it liniair for use in am/ssb?
11m?
No
11m is CB band in the USA which is limited to 4 watts max..but often times people " mars mod " radios by taking a single diode or resistor out..to then get a full spectrum of bands including 11m..unfortunately some radios have software limts you can't bypass like hardware limits..several videos on " MARS mod" of several different radios..Cheers..
Hi, i just got one of the other models, usdx + v2 from Banggood, and that one has 11 meter all mode 😉 but almost every one of that kind comes whitout any battery, but just use a powerbank like me, its just give ju more power 😊 best regards and 73 from Norway.
Yes it has 11 meter... just not in the meny, use 10 meter, and tune it down to 27mhz :)
Why people say “seek you 40” when those who listen will obviously will be tuned to the 40m??? It’s not like some harmonic will transmit them to the 80m and the 20m as well so he’d only want response from the 40m listeners. I find ridiculous, unless I’m missing something?
I guess it's to extend the call. Also some people say ...and listening. Well you just called CQ, what else would you be doing? If i want to extend the call i just say my callsign a couple of extra times. Which is more useful if conditions are poor.
Nope. Often CQ on 7100 results in 2nd harmonics on 14200! So it’s just a habit from old times when harmonic suppression wasn’t at its best. 73
Anyone tuning has more chance of seeing your signal or hearing your voice the longer your CQ call is. So it's just to give something else to say, really.
Also some people may be listening in two bands, on two radios, etc. give them a chance by saying the band - it's not a big deal
We used to run 4 or more radios on field days, people calling out the band was helpful when you have multiple bands going on at once, also it gives you something to say to make the transmission longer.
