That is exactly what he meant, cause if it was supernatural, there isn't really anything you can do about it, but if it was actual people doing horrible things in the forest, that means the situation is very real and people aren't just going missing, but actually getting killed, and they'd have to investigate it thoroughly.

The guy who didn't respond to you in the diner is actually a cultist. He walks out of the diner and sneaks into the bathroom of your RV. If you try to open the RV bathroom door it's locked.
I'm shocked that you didn't realize your camper door was wide open after eating your burger in the diner you did close it before you went in so that means somebody messed with it pretty creepy
