@Henry Coe, Thanks for all the great info! So its an 860 12 hp. Thanks, Ive kinda sidelined it, but Ive started painting it. My steering broke while taking it off road. I will have to weld it or find another steering assembly.
The engine model and type are about 5 inches from where the engine bolts to the frame, on the right side (carb side) of the shroud. Mine where really hard to see and almost impossible to find. When you find your model number, this link has a diagram and parts list for B&S motors. www.mymowerparts.com/pdf/Briggs-&-Stratton-Engine-Parts-Manuals-Parts-List/
The reason the tractor kept dying is because your engine is running off of the battery since the charging box on the front grill is bad. Once you started the other tractor and got the MTD running it stayed running because the battery was generating the spark.
71 Sears yeah Ive since put a modern coil on there and it runs fine. I broke the steering taking it off road though, lol havent touched it since. Well I did start painting it.
You have a blown head gasket.I don't know if you have fixed it or not.I can give some advice on those motors.Ive have 2 of these a 990 and a 960.They both would pop, backfire, and run like crap.It was the condenser.Any 12v condenser will work. The briggs condenser for it will be like 20.00.Those engines are built like a tank.So don't give it up on it,if you still have it.
Here's a link to the Repair Manual for out of production B&S engines from 1919 - 1981. www.uni-power.co.uk/pdf/wsm/briggs/CE8069%20Repairmans%20Handbook%201919%201981.pdf
Your MTD is a 141-860. 760 is the 10hp and 960 is the 14 or 16hp. www.manualslib.com/manual/107838/Mtd-141-760-10-H-P.html#product-141-760, 141-860, 141-960

I just inherited an 860 sat for 15 years. Runs good looking forward to fixing it up.
