Honda C90 / Honda Sea90 Get it :) Its time to do the literal nut and bolt restoration using an ultrasonic cleaner #HondaC90 #TheRetroFuture #ElliotColl
Elliot, it's so good to see you being so positive. I have to say as a motorcycle owner my self who's had his motorcycles stolen a couple times I couldn't make it through your initial video of when you broke down, it brought back such a flood of awful memories. To see you approach this with such optimism, pulling yourself up from despair like that, it really makes me appreciate how strong your outlook on life is and although I have 10+ years on you I am flawed by your maturity and will try harder myself to find that in my own life.
It makes my happy to see someone bounce back from a stolen/burnt bike, destroyed Game Boy games, a lawsuit, and everything you’ve had to deal with. I’ve had a good year, and seeing you turn this year around is amazing. Thank you for being sane!
If you're considering parking it out front again, maybe see about getting a big eye bolt in the front of your house through to a stud or cemented in to lock it up
Now you should heat the parts up with a flame or propane torch (except for the plastic bit) and then quench in oil to rust proof them. Consult a video for how this is done.
Not sure how good of an idea that is as it will change the hardness of the metal. Some of these are going to be a specific bolt type that probably doesn’t want to be any harder (ie more brittle) or softer
If you're looking for a great rust remover, try evaporust. I bought some after watching hand tool rescue use it to restore old engines and tools and the stuff works great! You just degrease your parts, then leave them in the rust remover for a few hours or a day, and the rust is completely gone, the stuff is even reusable, and perfectly safe to touch without gloves. The ultrasonic cleaner you got is really good for cleaning anything with a lot of small nooks that would be a pain otherwise. Louis Rossman uses them in his MacBook repair business to clean motherboards! Really versatile tool. Glad everything is working out well on the rebuild!
Elliot, get yourself some Evapo-Rust if you can get it in your country. It’s Non-Toxic. I’ve been using it for 15 years and it’s hands down the best rust remover. You can leave your parts in Evapo-Rust for a month if you wanted too and they’re will be no damage at all. The only problem is the parts are cleaned so well they will flash rust if you don’t put oil on the parts. Once you remove your parts from the solution you wash them off with water then dry them immediately then add a light coat of oil. I once tried Rust-Oleum’s rust remover because my local shop was out of Evapo-rust. Stay away from Rust-Oleum’s rust remover because it literally eats metal. It damaged my parts so badly I had to buy new ones. The parts were have the size of what they originally were.
Are you going to heat up all of the nuts and bolts that you've just cleaned and then drop them into a boil so they will soak up the oil and protect them and give them a black tint
I've got an ultra sonic cleaner and it's great of some stuff but cleaning vinegar is amazing for rust. Super cheap, just let the parts sit in it for 24 hours.
Don't fill the ultrasonic cleaner with the solution but rather put a small container filled with the solution into the ultrasonic cleaner that is filled with water.
Using a degreaser on the parts before putting them in the ultrasonic with the rust remover might have made the ultrasonics’ job even easier. Looking good!
Congratulations, Can't wait to see what the bike looks like after you've rebuilt it, Such a rewarding process, Keep up the brilliant work you do, Ps please get a garage for your bikes and cameras for security and around your house, Keep safe ☺
You need to remove all the old zinc plating and apply a new zinc plating! There're a lot of plating companies and it's a cheap job. In that condition the rust will come back worst than before...
Agree need to get a good coating on the steal parts doubly so living near ocean. Coat my tools with motor oil and wipe them down but for hardware get it done proper so the parts last.
might want to check if the cap is supposed to vent just one way(probably) and that system inside the cap still works (could stink of gas otherwis, you'd notice if it was stinking of gas though pretty quick).
ffs please tell me your not doing this in the same room as all your gameboy stuff again right??? speaking of... i'll give you $20 for one of those ruined minuet tetris copys!
Rust conversion is a waste of time. For painted parts > sandblast and powdercoat. For these, plating instead of powdercoating. But same idea. Otherwise the rust will just come back.
Rolling with the punches and keeping moving forward. Can’t wait to see the final result. Would have been so easy to just give up and mope. There are loads of cheap and cheerful mixes of stuff around the standard kitchen that removes rust. You don’t have to buy the expensive stuff. What’s the main ingredients in that mix? Maybe make it yourself. Car channels are the best at that stuff. I think edd china (guy from wheeler dealers) has videos on it.
Hey Elliot, you don’t have to mix the solvent with the water. Put the parts in a small jar and fill that. The ultrasonic waves will transfer through the jar as long as it’s sturdy, so I recommend glass. Then you can filter the solvent out with a coffee filter and re-use it. Just don’t rest it on the bottom if you can avoid it. Try to use the basket because it’s designed for that. Currently restoring an 80s Honda and this has worked pretty well with evaporust and green power solvents.
There is one important thing missing though... how can you do a process like this without the supervision of a ducktor? 😉 See @oddtinkering for reference!
Also an old toothbrush is all you need to get into the little tricky bits. It’s amazing what a cleaner, some home made solution and a toothbrush can do.
If you want to save some money on solvents for the ultrasonic cleaner, just buy a gallon (Or 3 liters) or so of White vinegar. It's cheap, it waters down safely, and it eats rust like crazy.
The reason your ultrasonic cleaners keep failing is right there at 2:06 in the video. Assuming you stopped there (confirmed at 3:29), you are not putting enough water in the device. You MUST fill them to the fill line. The fill line is not a maximum fill, it is the mandatory fill. Failing to fill the ultrasonic cleaner all the way *WILL* cause your cleaner to fail long before its time.
WD-40 is your best friend if you live on the coast or next to salt water. Spray some WD-40 on a rag and wipe down the chrome/metal parts on your bike, or spray it on hard to reach places like engines and suspension components. WD-40 will keep the rust away cheaply and effectively. Also don’t forget to use wax on the painted and plastic parts
I hate asking because I always assume the worst, but how is Freya?? She hasn't made an appearance as of late. We'd love to hear her behind the camera making funny little remarks :)
One great tip I learnt. Place parts in a ziplock bag and add the neat product, such as degreaser or rust remover. Fill the ultrasound with hot water and dunk the bag in. The sound waves still work through the bag and you use far less of the chemicals.
You can get ultrasonic cleaners with UV, I wonder if they’d work on yellowed game controllers and consoles? Maybe even for yellowed and grimy key caps as well
I just want to see a gameboy moherboard cleaned in the ultra sonic cleaner with IPA as the fluid. Ive seen people do it with graphics cards. Not sure how the caacitors would fare though
You could make up an electrostripping bath out of old plastic tub, one of them variable voltage power packs or a battery charger for a car and a bag of washing soda to make some electrolyte, chuck in a ton o' water mixed with a couple decent spoonfuls of soda, connect the neg side to the part you want cleaning and the positive side to a steel electrode submerged in the solution and keeping the part from the posi side just put the part in and turn on the juice and leave for a day or so, rust and paint be gone as will oil and grease and its prob cost you about 1p in electricity to do it.
Maybe just have some fine wire wool at the ready for between baths. Sometimes it’s good to knock the big rust spots off so the solution can get underneath
I assume you will, but those suspension arms were packed with grease. You’ll have to take them a part and clean out the old grease now as its contaminated, but it was probably a good idea to do that anyway so no big deal
I work on old 70s and 80s go karts and removing rust is very tedious. I have a wire wheel that helps alot. Along with different chemical baths. Ultra sonic is really the way to go. Keep going!
The interesting thing about rust is a lot of the time it looks far worse than it really is. Unless it's something that's been sat out in the rain for years and years, it's probably just going to be surface rust and with a bit of work it'll clean right off! I wouldn't have thought even a night in the sea would do a whole lot of permanent damage on the thicker bits of metal, like bolts. They should clean up nicely. Something with thinner walls like a petrol tank, may not be quite so lucky though.
Elliot, it's so good to see you being so positive. I have to say as a motorcycle owner my self who's had his motorcycles stolen a couple times I couldn't make it through your initial video of when you broke down, it brought back such a flood of awful memories. This is one of the nicest comments I have ever read. Thank you for this.
@@TheRetroFuture2 My pleasure.
It makes my happy to see someone bounce back from a stolen/burnt bike, destroyed Game Boy games, a lawsuit, and everything you’ve had to deal with. I’ve had a good year, and seeing you turn this year around is amazing. Thank you for being sane!
It is comments like this that give me hope for humanity
During modern times, we have a shortage of that…
You seem to be enjoying your new toy. I can't wait to see your 20+ min video of you just putting whatever you find in that ultrasonic cleaner! lol 🤣
Can't wait to see the finished restoration!
Wow. This Ultra Sonic Cleaner does a great job.
If you're considering parking it out front again, maybe see about getting a big eye bolt in the front of your house through to a stud or cemented in to lock it up
Can't wait to see it completed. It's entertaining seeing it being restored. Definitely should do a before and after
2:07 seamless cut 😂
Hello Elliot, vinegar and citric acid are also good for removing rust 👍🏼
Now you should heat the parts up with a flame or propane torch (except for the plastic bit) and then quench in oil to rust proof them. Consult a video for how this is done.
Not sure how good of an idea that is as it will change the hardness of the metal. Some of these are going to be a specific bolt type that probably doesn’t want to be any harder (ie more brittle) or softer
I'm actually enjoying this restoration saga more then your other channel! The situation sucks, but your resilience is amazing and so is your work.
Nearly started dancing to the beat of the spray cleaner 😅
You put larger objects in without the “fry basket”. We do it where we work like that constantly with no issues.
If you're looking for a great rust remover, try evaporust. I bought some after watching hand tool rescue use it to restore old engines and tools and the stuff works great! i love the progress of your bike!
It's a rewarding process

Hey Elliot, looks like audio quit out after 8:21, but does come back around 9:00
these came out really good!
Actually there's a product called evaporust which is also effective and reusable you can check Adam Savage video on it
Are you going to heat up all of the nuts and bolts that you've just cleaned and then drop them into a boil so they will soak up the oil and protect them and give them a black tint
Its like a deep fryer for rust removal
If you need to remove rust on anything larger, electrolysis is effective and easy.
I've got an ultra sonic cleaner and it's great of some stuff but cleaning vinegar is amazing for rust. Super cheap, just let the parts sit in it for 24 hours.
no sound from 8:21 on?
Don't fill the ultrasonic cleaner with the solution but rather put a small container filled with the solution into the ultrasonic cleaner that is filled with water.
For some reason this video makes me want fish and chips
Now zinc plate it all or it will rust like there is no tomorow.
Consider speaking to a machinist about making replacement parts.
This is important. There might be rust under the plating
Agree need to get a good coating on the steal parts doubly so living near ocean. Coat my tools with motor oil and wipe them down but for hardware get it done proper so the parts last.
might want to check if the cap is supposed to vent just one way(probably) and that system inside the cap still works (could stink of gas otherwis, you'd notice if it was stinking of gas though pretty quick).

speaking of... i'll give you $20 for one of those ruined minuet tetris copys!
Another fun method of rust removal I have had the chance employ is *sandblaster!* It would not work on tiny stuff like that, but it was very fun
Using the sandblaster is adicting
Rust conversion is a waste of time. For painted parts > sandblast and powdercoat. For these, plating instead of powdercoating. But same idea. Otherwise the rust will just come back.

Now all I want to see is Elliot but a crusty old Gameboy in there.

Gasoline, err, petrol, is good for grime and grease.
There is one important thing missing though... how can you do a process like this without the supervision of a ducktor? 😉 See @oddtinkering for reference!
Lovely to see things being restored. Do you have to do electrolysis with chromium to make it stainless steel?
Also an old toothbrush is all you need to get into the little tricky bits. It’s amazing what a cleaner, some home made solution and a toothbrush can do.

Where is the Reliant Scimitar
That "ADMONITION!!" warning text on the ultrasonic cleaner tho.
Dave Dingle progress?

Whats about the fumes ?

You can get ultrasonic cleaners with UV, I wonder if they’d work on yellowed game controllers and consoles? Maybe even for yellowed and grimy key caps as well
DON'T
I tried cleaning an NES controller in ultra sonic once, and it became quite briddle.
Rather use warm, soapy water and a toothbrush
I just want to see a gameboy moherboard cleaned in the ultra sonic cleaner with IPA as the fluid. Ive seen people do it with graphics cards. Not sure how the caacitors would fare though

There’s a nylon fabric washer In Those front springs. You might want to check that again before refitting
It says no stream tap to retry :(
Edit i can see now the video
Maybe just have some fine wire wool at the ready for between baths. Sometimes it’s good to knock the big rust spots off so the solution can get underneath
If you put everything just in (heated) citric acid for one or two days it will work also. 😁
I assume you will, but those suspension arms were packed with grease. You’ll have to take them a part and clean out the old grease now as its contaminated, but it was probably a good idea to do that anyway so no big deal
Check out the Hand Tool Rescue channel. He restores tools over a century old with a big barrel of rust cleaner.
get some evaporust my friend. Remember that you can reuse it, so after the ultrasonic bath - right back to the bottle it goes.
They do an amazing job! =D
Evaporust is the best rust remover you can get. Plus it is reusable quite a few times.
I like how amused you are, you could have done it with one session and clean the rest with soap and water, but good enough too!
Welcome to my floor, you've said that before
The theives who stole the bike now watching this now be like :0
The shocked pikachu meme
This could be a RUclips channel in its own right 😆 I’d watch it 👍
Japanese stuff, ultrasonic cleaner, brake cleaner... You've become Bryan from Tech Yes City! 😂
I'm glad that worked out for you gives the metal a nice finish
Omg, during the intro I kept going: "Please let him have an ultrasonic cleaner" It's so damn satisfying. And there you go.
you should try using some white vinegar instead of rust remover to see if its just as effective at a fraction of the cost
This Bikes going to be better then new once the Phoenix rises from the ashes.
Im happy for you that you're able to fix your bike, you sound much happier :)
I hope things go better from now on!!
I work on old 70s and 80s go karts and removing rust is very tedious. I have a wire wheel that helps alot. Along with different chemical baths. Ultra sonic is really the way to go. Keep going!
Have the scumbags been caught yet?
You can dip it in vinegar as well
Vinegar works wonders for me
Removing rust
Fun
Forbidden deep fryer
There's no audio at all. Was that intentional?
Just reload, then it should be good
🤩🤩🤩
Good luck
SCIENCE!
Neat.
Hi how old are you
Wow nice
Hows do you think the scooter will handle after all the changes?
So long as you are not in a hard water area, normal tap water is fine.
Is this from that motorcycle that resulted in the fumes?
What brand is the cleaner?
Great video 😊
Seems interesting
Love the videos!
Wow, i am really happy for you Eliot! :D
Can i ask you how many that thing cost?
