Thanks Lexxie, an important skill for newer pilots, often not discussed by many that already know to fly. Back when I was learning to fly, I practiced landings in Velocidrone by hovering near a taller object like a tree, or flag (as camera points up). This give perspective to remain stationary, and not drift over the ground (forward/back, or left/right). It also provides important guidance to vertical motion vs. throttle control. An exercise I did was to takeoff at base of tree, climb, circle, then decent and land. Makes for good hover training practice too. Unfortunately Betaflight, unlike INAV software does not have a position-hold feature, that would aid beginners in learning land. Kind of like an enhanced angle mode. BTW: switching to angle mode vs. acro mode can also make learning to land easier until a pilot develops an eye for how an approach and landing should look like.
I am personally not using any other mode than acro and therefore teach people how to do it in acro as well 😅 I think mpre modes can also confuse beginner pilots 🤷🏻♀️ but oh well ☺️
I've still found it easier to show pilots how to do the 'infinite split-s' landing method for most as the default one to learn, and that really builds the automaticity to land well on demand. The other real benefit has been changing to frames that put the props in view very slightly, because those reference points are key for being able to low-hover to really do the quick/smooth landings we used to require for our team racing (would be land in a landing zone for a pilot/quad change)
Hi Lexxie, Love the landing episode, I have always struggled to land my whoop (talking reality not sim) watching your video had a eureka moment and now it lands so easily... perhaps I should of got this before bit of a "doh" moment. But yeah Airmode on/off switch. Otherwise the quad touches down and immediately bounces back up into the air.... doesn't do it if airmode off. LOL 😆 😆 thanks GrahamP
50 degrees! My goodness you must be hauling buns!! I still struggle a bit with landing with my angle at 20 degree's. I will set mine to 30 and work my way up to 50. I don't need to get too used to 20. I'm just being careful with my quad. Thank you Lexie! I see a few things I can definitely work on.
Sim Pilot here. Does it make much of a difference if i land using air mode or not and if practicing in airmode woulg give me real world bad habits specially for a racer?
Great question! Of course I would recommend Josh Bardwells channel for any tech questions. But, Some people do use air mode on a switch, and switch it off to land. The best maneuver is to just leave it on and learn to disarm right before hitting the ground. Using a switch is one more step you have to remember. Come in and do a "tornado" or "toilet bowl" to bleed off speed and line yourself up with the ground and disarm. Regardless of what anyone says, the key to a good pilot is stick time. Stick time is the only way to get better. I personally love Velocidrone for a SIM. 700 hours and counting!! Bottom line, being a racer and landing is a whole different thing. We fly at 45+ camera angle and there is no seeing the ground unless your under power. Come in, quick toilet bowl spin to slow down and line up and then disarm and drop nicely on its feet.
^ I couldn't put it into better words. I usually say that it's better to do everything in acro mode because it allows you to react in case of emergency ☺️ training and sticktime are indeed what makes the best pilot
@@ChainsawFPV Always fast on the comments like you are on the track (always trying to chase you on the leaderboard hahaha)! Saw JB's video but not much input on how it is for racers although i heard it does help freestylers. Thanks for the advice! Means a lot. :)
@@MaiOnHigh Thanks lexie! Its been a question in my mind for a while! Yup stick time is key! Was wondering what settings are best for a sim pilot to emulate races irl maybe ill bring it up on the next livestream of yours. Things like true lens make no sense to me. Hahaha
@@nozty Guess easiest way to put it, airmode keeps your quad at above idle when you zero throttle. Allowing quad to stay stable. It also keeps the PID loop active. So if you hit something, like the ground, it will freak out. Shutting off air mode allows you to land without the PID active and quad flipping out. Or why we disarm right before hitting the ground. But landing in racing is never a pretty thing. Lol Most just disarm and let it roll. Race quads are tough. Otherwise, while racing, you are mostly at full throttle, so just permanently enable airmode and send it!!!! Freestyle you are constantly dropping to zero throttle, so you need airmode to keep the idle so you can keep control.
I just got my fpv drone this Monday. First time I tried it I installed the propellers wrong and it flipped side ways. Next day I installed the propellers correctly and I took of slowly... I been using it everyday today to, but I just been flying it on line of sight and the drone is to fast for a beginners drone. I always try to stay still or go side to side and forward and backwards but. I don't think fpv is for me. But maybe it's because am to scared to try it with the goggles on? Or not enough training on a simulator? Am already giving up and thinking about selling the damn thing lol 😰😖😅
Line of sight is way harder than fpv to be perfectly honest. Especially in acro mode 🤷🏻♀️ I am not sure if I would be able to make it happen myself! Get some sim time and totally put the goggles on! There are many tutorials and tracks for beginners! You can also set up a throttle cap at 30/40% to go slooooowly 💜
@@MaiOnHigh thanks for the advice very much appreciated!! God bless you!! Am uh keep on practicing but this time I need to watch your beginners tutorials and spend time on a simulator. Idk which simulator but I'll give it try at simulators 🙂

@MaiOnHigh, is this track still available? In nemesis mode when I filter by "maionhigh" I can see a lot of tracks, but landing one is not there. Due to some reasons using "Download track" in "Track editor" I also can't get it. Maybe you can share a track file, so it can be imported using "Import track" VelociDrone function?
There is also "Import Track" in "Track Editor" that allows to import track by putting a track file into Documents/Home directory, but to use this I need to be able to download file from some site as a file.
I was trying to use the instructions in the description box, but "Download Track" shows nothing and in Nemesis node when I search by "maionhigh" there are a lot of tracks, but there is no "landing one". I was trying to share screenshots in comment, but comment got deleted :(

I really like your videos. I've been flying since 2016, but I don't put myself out there. I like how you advocate for women. It's difficult though when you're not that great looking, I had so many mean comments from guys in the hobby on my channel that I just shut down and fly for myself. I was even offered two sponsorships but turned down because I didn't want to take photos of myself. I think it's great that a trans woman is accepted in racing, too. Keep doing what you're doing.
Thanks so much for your comment! I get a lot of nasty comments and DMs too unfortunately... But I guess if I go the hard way and put myself out there - maybe other women won't have to 😔 I'm sorry you had to deal with this!

50 is good for racing but if you like freestyle more I'd say stick with max 30 😅
That's fairly standard for racing - in the sim, just mess around with whatever and start getting used to what range feels best for you.
