  • This is a little beast but can be burned up if punished, it is a but expensive and could use a little better gearbox sealing but otherwise it has some power when you need it.

200Lb+ Gorillas will find ways to burn out pretty much anything. I’ve had that exact grinder forever. I run it hard and put it away wet, and I haven’t had a single issue with it. I’ve ran it for 30-40 minutes at a time, with like a 30 seconds-to-2 minute break to reposition, then another 30-40 minutes run time. Sometimes run it all day like that. It barely gets warm.
I think the guys having problems with these burning out either clog the vent holes with crap, suck enough debris and dust into it that it clogs the air channels inside, or maybe screw up or break the fan/blades inside. The other thing I can think off is if they’re not greased properly, the extra friction could be putting a strain on the motor, that then overheats.

I just realized that I’m not generally running them at Max RPM the entire time for those long periods. So maybe at the full 10,500 for hours on end it could overheat. Though I’m not running it slow either, usually in the 6000-9000 RPM range.

I learned quite a bit about angle grinders watching your videos lately. I have never used many electric tools, but now know what to look for. ThankYOU, Catus!

secret : break the allen heads loose FIRST with a small pair of mini vise grips Before you untighten them with an allen key wrench = Keeps them from being stripped. Then tighten them back with same mini vise grip . saves alot of striped situations .

i intend to specialize in the field of these type of really high power/torque universal motors i really like them and want to know the bits like "no it's not the motor but the BEARINGS!!" OHHH i love to know those things like what type of bearing will run with that type of motor w/o being overworked as i want to buy bearings that you'd have to try to break that won't die like these grinders do as i thought of that earlier

I have one but it's a 6 inch ,has a paddle switch on front. The side locking switch usually means home gamer.

Uhh...not at all. Many shops and facilities require these types of switches for safety reasons, so the grinder doesn't turn on when its thrown around or when dropped down on a work surface where something can make contact with a paddle switch. That's why there's always different switch versions of the same grinder from almost every manufacturer.

Some tradepeople intentionally fuck up their tools to look more tough or legitimate I guess? I go with the Japanese approach and take care of my tools. I dont toss my drills and impacts on the ground, etc. and nothing ever breaks.

Curious if you know, Makita sells these in 4-1/2 and 5”… I don’t see a difference other than maybe the guard that comes with it because according to Makita website specs, weight is the same.

I used to use those same grinders all day every day cutting and polishing granite. One would last at the most 6 months. 😅

That's cause stone dust/debri is the worst for any grinder. It blocks up air channels, destroys rotors, commutators, brushes, and bearings.

Did you use it at full speed for polishing? Would it be a bad idea to use it with a variable speed dial, as I might with a router?
I'm looking at doing some marble polishing, but I don't want to burn up one of my (9554NB) grinders.
