I've owned the IE 900s since they were issued by Sennheiser. Pre-ordred directly from Sennheiser. My hearing isn't what it was (I'm in my 70's), though I am treble sensitive. Initially the IE 900s were bright to me. I finally persuaded Snugs in the UK to make custom ear molds for me for the IE 900s and I sent mine over to them to make a template; I also sent them to Oratory 1990 in Vienna asking for an EQ profile.
I use them when I'm out walking the dogs on the beach of Puget Sound, source being a Chord Mojo 2 coupled with a Poly playing from an SD card. With the EQ adjustments now available on the Mojo and the isolation from the Snugs molds (er, moulds), the sound rivals, and on many tracks from varying genres, exceeds what I hear through very expensive headphones with an excellent amp and an excellent DAC.
Unlikely I'll put aside the Mojo 2, but I might order a BTR7 from Amazon to try out. Thanks for this brief review.

I really really hope Fiio might bring out Aptx Lossless with their next BTR release or update the BTR7 with that codec. I am wondering if anyone knows if there is an Aptx Lossless transmitter dongle yet?

here is an interesting pairing... take the BTR7 and feed the balanced output to the balanced input to the Centrance Ampersand... it sounds amazing on just about any IEM or Headphone and plenty of power when needed for planar headphones...

  • @Gambit33

What's considered "enough" or "good enough" in sound is very subjective and varies wildly from person to person. To most people, an Apple dongle with a cheap IEM or a $15 Moondrop Quarks DSP for Android folks is "good enough." Audiophiles obviously demand much more for "good enough" sound quality, but even then, there's a massive range of gear that could be considered "enough."
I own the BTR7 and really enjoy using it with my Audeze Euclid, as well as various other IEMs and headphones. The BTR7 is definitely an amazing portable DAC/amp, especially for the price and size. It turns any smartphone or tablet into a quality DAP. However, I recently bought the new Sony NW-ZX707 DAP (Japanese, high gain version) and it's noticeably better in sound quality compared to the BTR7... at 4x the cost. I consider both of these products to be more than "enough" for my portable audiophile desires.

Ie900 definitely scales with power, sounds good out of Questyle m15 but sounds great out of my idsd signature. Just slight bump in 2.5k to 5k region and it just sounds perfectly balanced.

I've heard the Ie600 and Symphonium Meteors and for the $500 ish range these 2 are quite phenomenal. I can afford to go higher in price but really I don't see much gain per $ invested like I would headphones and 2 channel. IEMs in the budget to midfi range have come very far in a short amount of time.. I've tried many in the $1.5k to $3.0k range and yes they were better but not impressively so. 64 Audio Tia Trio and U12T were cool and I enjoyed the Noble Sultan but again all seemed overpriced for how much I was getting out of it. Perhaps a Sultan used for ~1200 or so would start to make sense.

Do you like the bass from your jewel and Sony as much as you liked it with your evo and AK? I remember that used to be your favorite iem for bass. I just ordered the Sony DAP so now I’m thinking about the jewel. I loved the evo bass too so I wonder how the sets compare?

There is no such thing as perfect synergy for everyone. I auditioned IE900 and didn't like them at all because of the lacklustre midrange. No DAP will make them sound right for me. My personal favourite pairing at the moment is Topping G5 + EJ07M

      1. I never said there is perfect synergy for everyone. I agree with your statement.
      2. However, I doubt you or anyone can make that statement without trying enough chains, for any given IEM. I have been surprised often enough by results after changing source gears.
