(Reply) Yep...that's why I mentioned it - I just thought it was an interesting fact worth sharing that (according to the label on this disc) it appears the film was still known as 'Revenge' in Japan despite the name change.

Thanks to helpful Japanese fluent viewers - it seems that the translation app mis-read the symbol for Big as Dog

Thanks again to these clever people in the comments - the text on side two of the disc that was blank and inaccurately translated to "from been no", actually says "Shuuroku sarete orimasen", meaning "No recording"
Star Wars (again) - back to the Comic Book Guy voice...
'Well actually you can only see Star Wars in it's un-ruined original version on LaserDisc and VHD, so when you say that these formats aren't really worth watching any more you couldn't be any more wrongerer actually.
A) I'll let you in on the secret (that any true Star Wars fan should already know)...Look up "Harmy's Despecialized" - now That is the best way to see the original unchanged Star Wars...not in a 250 line low-res washed out 4:3 crop with Japanese subtitles.
Q) Whats on the blank side of the disc?
A) Interesting fact (but not interesting enough for me to include in the video despite shooting it)...the end of the caddy that goes in the machine has a series of notches on it that tells the machine what way up the caddy is and whether it contains a single or double sided discs.
So if you get a disc like the magazine that only has one side, the machine refuses to let you insert side B. Also the machine will not let you put a disc back in the caddy the wrong way up, it only ejects when the caddy is the right way up.
Like I said, not interesting enough for the video, but still a neat system. In comparison the RCA CED had no caddy orientation system so you could mess things up royally if you really wanted to.

A) A lot of movies of this period were shot open matte in Super 35. They were cropped to a widescreen format to be shown in the cinema and then when shown on 4:3 TV screens, they often used the full open-matte frame which revealed more footage at the top and the bottom of the frame. So both versions are right, neither is wrong. Each serves a purpose. It's just that nowadays most of these old films will only be shown in their cropped versions given the proliferation of 16:9 screens in the home.

I video on a vinyl disc would be a really odd thing. It is odd things like that I have never known exist until today.

Funny Bunny Not even just months. A year on this one. A year dedicated to VHD in some capacity. It has inspired me to start the process of hunting down a Laserdisc player.
I know how this feels. I used to enjoy film photography when I was younger. But, when digital cameras appeared, I mistakenly left film photography behind. Recently, I rediscovered it and enjoy it even more. Now, I'm determined to save as many of those in-expensive point-and-shoot and plastic film cameras that make their way across my path. I'd hate to see them all vanish from existence.
Techmoan must have inspired me in some way. ;o)
Honestly, I'm only 23 so I wasn't even born for any of this stuff. I find it fascinating personally.

it is amazing how rapidly home cinema tech has evolved. My parents bought films on 8mm in the late 70s, then we got VHS in the 80s, then LaserDisc in the 90s, then I became an early adopter of DVD (importing a player from Japan), again blown away by MPEG2, and then blow away completely when Bluray arrived in the 2000s, and I could have 2K digital cinema at home! And here we are today with 4K Blurays and digital cinema now possible in our homes, in many ways superior to a multiplex cinema presentations. In relative screen size and viewing distance terms, my home cinema provides a bigger screen than my local multiplex, and better sound. All this in the space of 40 years. We really are spoilt!
now consider at any time consumer electronics technology is 15 years or more behind the actual technology that is available. in 2020, 8k displays are now becoming more available to consumers and about 10 years ago I saw a 10k display from SHARP being demonstrated at an electronics show.
@@electrictroy2010 I moved to LaserDisc from VHS in the early 90s, mainly to get the letterboxed format which didn't catch on for VHS for a while. I was an early adopter of projectors too, my first one was just 640x480 resolution. That would be stamp size now compared to what we have today.
I've spent tens of thousands over the years on my home entertainment system, but personally I don't mind that as I love gadgets and technology. Some people spend a lto of money on food or clothes, me, it's home theater.

Nothing wrong with that. The 1980's was one of my two favorite decades, with the 1970's being the other.
I get such satisfaction from even just watching old, untouched stock being unboxed and put into action. There is something so amazing about seeing it brand new and functioning exactly as intended. It is like time traveling and owning a piece of that time.

It kind of hurts seeing something in its wrap so long being opened. If something has been wrapped for so long, you shouldn’t open it because it’s very rare. When he tore the wrap on that movie, I felt nervous for a second. I also hoped he didn’t throw out those old batteries because they don’t make them anymore and they weren’t corroded.

Japan really often seems like an alternate reality. Arcades, Laser Discs, all sorts of stuff that died in the west.

And those alternative movie titles. For example, Frozen is "Anna and the Snow Queen" in Japan.

My middle school had a laser disc player. It was the early 90's and I was in the 6th grade when I found it. During rainy day lunch periods, myself and a few friends would go see how far into "back to the future" we could get before class started.
It was my only experience with the laser disc, but it really opened my eyes to vhs alternatives and the possibilities of video quality.
Here I am now, with my windows 10 laptop, 4k apple TV, and a 4kUHD bluray player hooked up to my large 4k television.
I like the future so far, but i'd still love an old laser disc player and a copy of back to the future for those rainy days.
My first experience with LD players was in the early 80s at the mall, there was a "fancy" store that sold LD players and discs, the Big Projection TVs along with the top-of-the-line VHS players and the quite expensive (as compared to later) VHS tapes. They always had a LD playing on some of the display models, I would go in and spend hours there. They never gave me a hard time; my mother spent a ton of money buying those expensive VHS tapes. Me, I wanted an LD player, they just looked so much better. Mom went with the VHS so she could tape soap operas when she was working!
My grandfather had one of these VHD players. The appeal was that it was like a VHS that you didn't need to rewind and you could rapidly advance tracks. But laser disc was better in every way. The VHD discs that we rented would often have a lot of noise in the picture and lose tracking.

I remember it, I didn't think the picture quality was very good, it kinda jumped when I saw Star Trek the Motion Picture. And the machines were junk if you ask me. I went out and bought a Pioneer laser disc player instead, really had a great picture, the first Superman movie was on the 12" disc and so was Back to the Future.

'Return of the Jedi' started as Return of the Jedi, got changed to Revenge (this appears on a number of trailers) and then Lucas thought that Revenge wasn't the sort of thing a Jedi would do, so it went back to Return.

The slogan "His Master's Voice" (seen just under the logo) is actually the name of a painting of a dog listening to a cylinder phonograph.
In 1899 the painting was bought by the Gramophone Company to be modified and used to advertise the then-new disc gramophone. Their US affiliate company, the Victor Talking Machine Company (which became known as just Victor), decided to adopt it as a trademark.
By 1902, this trademark became a simplified drawing of the painting, known as the Nipper logo (after the name of the dog in the painting), which featured on all of the Victor records.
The Gramophone Company decided to adopt the trademark themselves in 1909, with most of their vinyls thereafter containing the logo and the phrase "His Master's Voice". Most people then came to recognise the brand by the slogan, and so in 1921, the company opened the first shop branded by this name - HMV.
In 1929 RCA bought Victor, becoming RCA Victor.
In 1931 RCA created the record company EMI Records Ltd, which would become one of the "big four" record companies, and eventually broke up in 2012.
In 1998, the HMV retail chain broke off from EMI to become the HMV Group, what we now know them as today.
The events of World War II caused RCA Victor's Japanese subsidiary, the Victor Company of Japan (or JVC) to become it's own independent company, due to the hostilities between Japan and America.
To this day, they are still allowed to (and actively use) the Victor name and Nipper logo, as is seen here, but only in Japan.
So in a nutshell, HMV, RCA and JVC are all very closely linked, something that surprised me when I first learned about it.

The hidden tragedy in the original painting is that Nipper looks so intrigued because, at the time he was listening to the record, his master had been dead for some time. It was the first time he'd _heard_ his master's voice in a while.
It's better than I expected! The quality appears slightly better than VHS. I really wish LaserDisc had taken off as the dominant format back in the day, but I guess it was just too pricey for people. The masses are always content to settle for the mediocre option if it saves them a few bucks. Oh well.
To be fair I don’t think many people were even buying sealed premade VHS movies either, they were pricy as well up until its last few years of life. Most people just wanted to record stuff off cable or rent tapes from blockbuster. I remember my parents wincing at the cost of 89’ Batman on VHS

In the early 1980's when Video Rental stores were just starting out I remember us renting a Video Disk machine plus the movies. It was quite expensive back then to rent the player + the disks. I remember being fascinated about why the movie looked like a record album inside the hardshell case. Seems like that technology was so brief in Video Rental stores with VHS soon taking over that many ppl forgot about these.
That pause comparison of back the future was great. Blu-ray FTW

About what you said halfway though this video regarding the booklet that came with the star wars film: in Japan, at regular screenings, it's normal for moviegoers to get a copy of the program with exactly this kind of stuff in it. It's really neat, and I wish we had something similar in the United States.

Great video. I loved vinyl and owned Laserdiscs back in the day (still do) but I never knew this format even existed. This player still looks cool today whether it is on its design or the way it performs.

Amazing that it's been sat somewhere in a warehouse unopened for 30yrs! Imagine the cost of storing it for that time. I love the idea that these old machines are given life and not just binned. The old films are fascinating also. To think I was just watching VHS tapes back in the 80s.

Hi there! Professional Japanese-English translator here! It seems that, yeah, Japan kept the original "Revenge of the Jedi" title, given that the word in question (復讐) means "revenge" or "vengeance." Not very Jedi-like, which I guess is why it got changed for the English release!
Gasp! They have since changed the title to ジェダイの帰還, which is much closer to the final English title. It may actually be even more interesting for having received an official release somewhere with the title "Revenge of the Jedi."
Might I add in the Mandarin Chinese translation of the title here in Taiwan, it's called 絕地大反攻, roughly "Return Attack of the Jedi". Sort of sits somewhere between "revenge" and "return"
PLEASE pirate a copy of Starview HCT-5808 and put it on TPB, there's literally NO COPIES in existence besides on that format which means it's impossible for anyone to get it anymore without wasting a lot of money to buy a reader too, which is just beyond the means of most of us.

I'm really interested in what has to offer that disc. I was going to ask the same, well not exactly, a fragment on youtube? Sadly I don't have a Laserdisc player, and importing one it's super expensive, 3rd world problems.
The total would only be $21.00, I don't think there are any import fees ? I gotten stuff from Japan before and never paid any fees.

I somewhat agree. However, there are _some_ benefits to Blu-Ray in that the discs do hold alot more data and so you can have more special features, documentaries, film commentaries on one disc. As opposed to some long movies on DVD (_Lawrence of Arabia_ comes to mind) that have to have the movie on one disc and everything else on another disc. Granted this isn't a good enough reason in and of itself to buy a Blu-Ray player and replace all your DVDs with Blu-Rays.

Actually, that is not correct. Dual-layer DVDs hold 8.5GB while single-layer Blu-ray discs hold 25GB. So even if you had a double-sided, dual-layer DVD the max you could store on it would be 17GB which is still less than a single-layer Blu-ray disc.

One HUGE advantage of Laserdisc over BluRay today is while watching the original Star Wars films. I have them on Blu-ray and Laserdisc, but I’d much rather watch the Laserdisc because it’s the unaltered versions before George Lucas started adding a bunch of CG garbage and additional things. Also Han shoots first.

I enjoy watching these videos about technology from the 80s. These machines have a certain charm to them, especially these old Japanese machines that were so high tech at the time. I collect old video game consoles from Japan and it's amazing all the things they came up with.
This is sooo much better than watching politics on the rest of youtube.
I'll consider myself lucky that I've eradicated politics from my feed here. RUclips isn't the place for intelligent political discourse, among other things.

That VHD machine makes the same beep sound as my PS4.
Maybe the PS4 is a VHD player in an other caseing, wich uses smaller discs?

I had both the 4:3 and widescreen versions of back to the future on Laserdisk. You are right that the 4:3 is open matte and has more top/bottom information but the special effects sequences were only done in 16:9. So in those sections of the film the 4:3 disk will be a pan & scan of the 16:9 frame shown in the cinema but for the non-special effects sequences you will see more.
i think that flickering freeze-frame is actually pretty cool. it's pretty much paused but you can see what kind of motion was happening when you paused
with the exception of the Japanese subtitles, I would LOVE to watch movies on VHD. Picture looks so 80s, which I love.
meg I agree! Although I think the Japanese subtitles adds something to it as-well. It’s also why I love to use instant and film cameras. The grain is what I LIVE for. Like yes I love my HD and 4K but the 80s grain is PERFECTION. Lol
Now living in Asia, I haven't seen VHD, I thoroughly enjoyed learning about a technology I've never heard of. Thx
