How to Add Shading, Texture, and Details to Your Drawing

- In this lesson, I go over the powerful techniques of shading and textures so that you can make your drawings look realistic. We as artists want to achieve a certain level of detail with our sketches but the problem is that too many artists jump ahead into said details. let's pull the curtain back as I show you one of my pencil sketches and how I achieved the desired look!
Drawing is a skill that most people wish they could do but they immediately put themselves in the category of "Oh, I could never do that." I want to take this time and welcome you to my channel: Draw Sessions.
I've been drawing all my life and have had the privilege of working both for AAA game studios and also movies. I have taught foundation drawing at the University of Cincinnati and it's time now to give back. I understand the frustrations of learning art in general but specifically, drawing. My channel is dedicated in helping absolute beginners, intermediate artists, and industry veterans - all wanting to improve their drawing skills. Please like, subscribe, hit the notification bell and comment below if you're finding this channel helpful in your journey of becoming an artist.

I love that you are explaining every single step, best teacher, thanks!!
You're very welcome!
Great! I got a Cloverfield Universe vibe.... But the Mist also. I like how you just freely draw. Let the page decide where/how your creature will develop. You have a very out of the box imagination. 👍🏻👍🏻one of my favorite RUclips channel.
Have you ever used q-tips with different levels of graphite. It gives a really soft shade. Just wondering you thoughts on that.
I haven't! But I have used graphite powder with a tissue.
I love your art, it kinda reminds me of a videogame named Morrowind, the setting is very alien, there's a lot of giant bugs that people ride and craft armors out of their shells
Hang on...so you show us drawings from start to finish and have proven countless times that this is all freehand and from your imagination and people still claim you trace? That is insane....sucks you still have to prove these things to the jealous few but in a way it is a massive compliment really...I mean these drawings are so cool and amazingly executed.
I enjoy watching your videos great inspiration for me especially at the end of the day after feeling mentally drained from work. All I need to do is put on one of your videos and I get the drawing 'bug' so thankyou very much for that.
Thank you! I just kinda chuckle and shrug it off. You can instantly spot someone's jealous, passive-aggressive undertone.
I was talking to my friend just today, how I m lacking at shading and texture, and you upload this! Can you read minds? Maybe you are a mind reading creature from Ecor-117.
What a wholesome art man
What a beauty!
Hi Bobby, Will you possibly be uploading videos in the future on how to digitally render and polish creature/character designs? I really want to make my work super polished to that professional level, especially my digital work. I find that I paint more traditionally when using Photoshop and Procreate, but I know most pros use a lot of blending modes and gradient maps in their work, and even incorporate a lot of 3d into their workflow.
Amazing artwork, your teachings from other videos have really stepped up my own art. I do have a question for you though, generally I don't draw on regular full pieces of paper but rather sticky notes or mini sketchbooks. Would you recommend that I start drawing on larger paper, is the size a hinderance to detailed work? Thanks so much I look forward to your text tutorials.
Спасибо за видео!
You would love Guyver.
I used to watch the old Guyver movies and animated movies back in the '90's.
I really like your shading method how you build up the value initially by doing the 'passes' over the area with strokes from different angles to apply a kind of 'base coat'. However, I cannot seem to get this method to work for me. Admittedly, I have only been practising it for a short while. I find that my drawing gets too dark. It's as though I am applying my initial base coast to heavily, so that when I go to add in value that is darker than the base coat, it all becomes a bit of a dark mess. I find I lose contrast. Clearly, you don't, so I'm not sure where I'm going wrong. Any who, great tips and hopefully I can get this method to work for me.
You said it right there: applying the initial coat too heavily. Next time, hold the pencil very lightly and when you switch directions to go over the previous area, don't push harder. Just keep all directions light.
How in the world do you get such contrast with graphite without it turning in to reflection city? What type of pencil are you using here?
EDIT: I suppose they're probably the pencils in the description huh? 😅
It's a combination of a 4b and black Prismacolor!
Perfect creature for making food 😂😂
hard to model that in 3d
The Zionists you sketching looks so real.......

your comment has a button to translate it to english, lmao.
Wow accused of tracing? Have they bothered to take a peek at your art station? Lol
Yeah it's pretty funny.
Not only do you have a gift for drawing, but also for teaching. There are very few RUclipsrs that I have watched that talks to their audience as if they are not only friends, but are in the same room with them. Another fantastic video!!
Wow, thank you!
I agree!
Totally agree!
Yes, really helps me to learn that I can understand clearly. Thanks
I’m trying to do this on my drawing livestreams 😊 I want my audience to feel like they are sitting next to me on a stool.
People who think you’re tracing are so dumb, you obviously have your own unique style and the skills that come with it. Love your work!
The project sounds cool and I can envision it cinematically even.
hey dude love your vidios and i have a problem lateley. i want to become a concept artist but i am currently a black hole when it comes to creature ideas. how do you get the ideas for your desings ang could your tell me how u do it. Keep up the good work and have a Fantastic day ( Sorry for my errors in the writing put english isnt my first language )
I love how excited he gets when thinking of something to add. I get the same way and my friends look at me like a crazy person
Hi again. Jim from Madrid, Spain (a fellow artist and a New Yorker expat living abroad for love).
Gotta say... another splendid and great video!!!
Due to some health issues I haven't been able to post comments but I've been watching your channel avidly.
I know you may not care, but if you don't mind...
I only used to draw when I was a kid and an early teenager. Then... I had to work while still in high school and have always worked afterwards, as well as working on my own education and all paid by me (2 University Degrees, trying to finish a third one on Education and an MBA). I've spent my life working Globally, met my wife and have made a life overseas at international level. Not a bad life after all. But a few years back, my health started to suffer and (in 2022) ART has helped me to get up again on my feet and continue on.
AND... YOU have been a strong part of It!
YOU have helped me improve tremendously on my drawing skills (you can't even imagine, I'm serious!) And it has transferred to my paintings as well, because your teachings are NOT only applicable to drawing in B&W with pencil... Nope! They are essentials for any artist!
So I want to say... THANK YOU! Because at my late 50s I am becoming a real artist thanks to you (and with absolutely NO art studies in the past - all computers and Business).
I am sorry if people do not appreciate my comment (maybe it's out of place) but I just wanted you to know the real impact you make on people all over the World.
Sorry if I may have caused any inconveniences and you have a subscriber for life (mine I mean!). 😁👍
Cheers from Sunny Spain!
😁👍😎✌
I forgot to say that...
1. Drawing -
I usually use a 2B & a Black Prismacolor. That's all I use now when drawing in B&W pencil.
Note - I also use coloured graphite 2mm leads with 2mm lead holders because I love to also use color in my sketches. I also draw with charcoal (B&W + Sanguine, depending on the drawing).
2. I love nature and wildlife (always have) and my real life sketches (as well as the ones dine at home) have improved amazingly since I've been watching your channel.
3. Creature Creation - from my wildlife background (though short, it's been intense - I'm always drawing or painting on a daily basis wherever I am... my wife and daughters sometimes get fed up with me but... hey! Right?) I have even started to venture somewhat on this area too... just drawing for now... No paintings but, you never know.
Just to share with you the impact of your teachings for an older starting artist.
Again... THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
Cheers!
😁👍
Tracing what? LOL
It's not like this is an anime character where there's 50,000 references that you can trace over. What a stupid accusation...
You have no idea. It comes with the territory though. I think the most hilarious comments come from those accusing me of drawing "too evil" of things and that I should draw friendlier stuff🤣
God-like drawing right there!! Looks so badass, love it 👌🏻👌🏻 gives me Starship Troopers insect boss vibes 😎🫡
WOW!That helped a lot with my drawing skills. And because you really like the ecor 117 project why don't you have a whole video all about it.
I do! It's the video that Milanote sponsored
What type of paper do you use?
Moleskin
I am interested in drawing animals and people,i use reference because i have a lot of learning to do . Would you possibly make a video on how to study art??? By that i mean learning about your subject and being able to draw more fron memory. Sorry if i dont maie sense.
It makes me think of a hybridized insects bordering genetically between the infusion of a mosquito infused with moth and a reptilian aspect to because of what looks like a tail at the end.
Shading, crosshatching creates the texture yes?
Those creatures are badass
Literally my savior! My new favorite channel btw.
one of the best channel out here like omg not only you explained every things you did but you showed us how to do it, you have helped me a lot with my drawing, thank you
That’s a killer drawing!!!!
The pencil will find its way.
Hello amazing tutorial, what pencil are you using? Thansk
4b
Hereeeeeere we go!
Dude when you shoeed its true scale i genuibky started frwaking out wtf
It's a big one!
Hello, I'm from Brazil and I started watching your videos recently, I think your art is incredible, unfortunately I have to use the RUclips translator to understand your explanations in some videos haha
I'm going to look into getting subtitles. Thank you for watching the videos🙏
interesting.. awesome monsters :)
少し前にやっていた複数の実在する生き物を組み合わせてクリーチャーを創る動画をまた投稿してほしいです。
あの動画はすごく楽しく創作意欲を刺激されます。
Its meg mucelbones
Great drawings! What brand of pencils do you use please?
Faber Castell and black Prismacolor
do you prefer wooden pencils over mechanical pencils?
Yes I do. Mechanical pencils are nice though.
👍👍👍👍👍
great look to this creature. and the human standing beside it is a cool idea. reminds me of a giant insect that could have been in the Peter Jackson version King Kong film.
Be watching this and been trying to figure out how do this kind of shading, texture and details using digital Becuase I use pen and Wacom tablet
It's better to learn how to do it on paper because it's very difficult to do it on a tablet. Tablets aren't meant to replicate shading. The reason pencil to paper needs to be learned first is because those skills transfer over to the digital world.
@@bobbyrebholz2183 i do understand but due to my migraine vertigo I have a lot of problems looking down so I had to give up on paper I found out that staring straight ahead at the front of the monitor helps me so that’s why I work with a pen tablet so I will keep watching your videos I wanna learn how to shade like that maybe there’s ways we can figure it out I appreciate it if you were able to do that and show video thank you thanks and God Bless
This is dope. Proportions reminds me of an old sketch I made in high school but it was more wolf-like than insectoid. This got me wanting to revisit it. Great stuff, dude!
Thank you so much for consistantly putting out videos, you are my favorite art youtuber!
Ive been watching a few of this guys shading vids. I dont understand anymore :( Its too hard for me to try and shade the way hes doing it
The way I do it doesn't necessarily mean you have to do the exact same technique. Just try using it as a starting point.
@@bobbyrebholz2183 k. It just looks nice for shading but i might take me a while to pull off tho
Will the 8B pencil do the trick ? Btw, I love your videos❤
That could! An 8b is very dark. If you're going for that, don't hold back.
Ok 😊😅, thanks for the reply ❤
I think i understood hoe to create structure, but my shadeing suck ass. That's what block me. I do a cool beast but im too scared of ruinig it with dark and light so i leave it flat on the page.😢
All your videos are incredible thank you for doing what you do
So nice of you. Thank you.
the lines are all so clean and dark. my sketchbook is smudgy as heck. great video 👍 cood creatures
Nice!! i really need to put some more texture and details on my drawings. Keep going with this channel! 💪
