How to Add Shading, Texture, and Details to Your Drawing

  • In this lesson, I go over the powerful techniques of shading and textures so that you can make your drawings look realistic. We as artists want to achieve a certain level of detail with our sketches but the problem is that too many artists jump ahead into said details. let's pull the curtain back as I show you one of my pencil sketches and how I achieved the desired look!
Drawing is a skill that most people wish they could do but they immediately put themselves in the category of "Oh, I could never do that." I want to take this time and welcome you to my channel: Draw Sessions.
I've been drawing all my life and have had the privilege of working both for AAA game studios and also movies. I have taught foundation drawing at the University of Cincinnati and it's time now to give back. I understand the frustrations of learning art in general but specifically, drawing. My channel is dedicated in helping absolute beginners, intermediate artists, and industry veterans - all wanting to improve their drawing skills. Please like, subscribe, hit the notification bell and comment below if you're finding this channel helpful in your journey of becoming an artist.

Great! I got a Cloverfield Universe vibe.... But the Mist also. I like how you just freely draw. Let the page decide where/how your creature will develop. You have a very out of the box imagination. 👍🏻👍🏻one of my favorite RUclips channel.

Have you ever used q-tips with different levels of graphite. It gives a really soft shade. Just wondering you thoughts on that.

Hang on...so you show us drawings from start to finish and have proven countless times that this is all freehand and from your imagination and people still claim you trace? That is insane....sucks you still have to prove these things to the jealous few but in a way it is a massive compliment really...I mean these drawings are so cool and amazingly executed.
I enjoy watching your videos great inspiration for me especially at the end of the day after feeling mentally drained from work. All I need to do is put on one of your videos and I get the drawing 'bug' so thankyou very much for that.

Hi Bobby, Will you possibly be uploading videos in the future on how to digitally render and polish creature/character designs? I really want to make my work super polished to that professional level, especially my digital work. I find that I paint more traditionally when using Photoshop and Procreate, but I know most pros use a lot of blending modes and gradient maps in their work, and even incorporate a lot of 3d into their workflow.

Amazing artwork, your teachings from other videos have really stepped up my own art. I do have a question for you though, generally I don't draw on regular full pieces of paper but rather sticky notes or mini sketchbooks. Would you recommend that I start drawing on larger paper, is the size a hinderance to detailed work? Thanks so much I look forward to your text tutorials.

I really like your shading method how you build up the value initially by doing the 'passes' over the area with strokes from different angles to apply a kind of 'base coat'. However, I cannot seem to get this method to work for me. Admittedly, I have only been practising it for a short while. I find that my drawing gets too dark. It's as though I am applying my initial base coast to heavily, so that when I go to add in value that is darker than the base coat, it all becomes a bit of a dark mess. I find I lose contrast. Clearly, you don't, so I'm not sure where I'm going wrong. Any who, great tips and hopefully I can get this method to work for me.

    • @bobbyrebholz2183
      @bobbyrebholz2183  3 месяца назад +1

You said it right there: applying the initial coat too heavily. Next time, hold the pencil very lightly and when you switch directions to go over the previous area, don't push harder. Just keep all directions light.

  • @SalivaYOUTUBE

How in the world do you get such contrast with graphite without it turning in to reflection city? What type of pencil are you using here?
EDIT: I suppose they're probably the pencils in the description huh? 😅

Hi again. Jim from Madrid, Spain (a fellow artist and a New Yorker expat living abroad for love).
Gotta say... another splendid and great video!!!
Due to some health issues I haven't been able to post comments but I've been watching your channel avidly.
I know you may not care, but if you don't mind...
I only used to draw when I was a kid and an early teenager. Then... I had to work while still in high school and have always worked afterwards, as well as working on my own education and all paid by me (2 University Degrees, trying to finish a third one on Education and an MBA). I've spent my life working Globally, met my wife and have made a life overseas at international level. Not a bad life after all. But a few years back, my health started to suffer and (in 2022) ART has helped me to get up again on my feet and continue on.
AND... YOU have been a strong part of It!
YOU have helped me improve tremendously on my drawing skills (you can't even imagine, I'm serious!) And it has transferred to my paintings as well, because your teachings are NOT only applicable to drawing in B&W with pencil... Nope! They are essentials for any artist!
So I want to say... THANK YOU! Because at my late 50s I am becoming a real artist thanks to you (and with absolutely NO art studies in the past - all computers and Business).
I am sorry if people do not appreciate my comment (maybe it's out of place) but I just wanted you to know the real impact you make on people all over the World.
Sorry if I may have caused any inconveniences and you have a subscriber for life (mine I mean!). 😁👍
    Cheers from Sunny Spain!
    😁👍😎✌

      I forgot to say that...
      1. Drawing -
      I usually use a 2B & a Black Prismacolor. That's all I use now when drawing in B&W pencil.
Note - I also use coloured graphite 2mm leads with 2mm lead holders because I love to also use color in my sketches. I also draw with charcoal (B&W + Sanguine, depending on the drawing).
      2. I love nature and wildlife (always have) and my real life sketches (as well as the ones dine at home) have improved amazingly since I've been watching your channel.
      3. Creature Creation - from my wildlife background (though short, it's been intense - I'm always drawing or painting on a daily basis wherever I am... my wife and daughters sometimes get fed up with me but... hey! Right?) I have even started to venture somewhat on this area too... just drawing for now... No paintings but, you never know.
Just to share with you the impact of your teachings for an older starting artist.
      Again... THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
      Cheers!
      😁👍

    • @bobbyrebholz2183
      @bobbyrebholz2183  4 месяца назад

It's better to learn how to do it on paper because it's very difficult to do it on a tablet. Tablets aren't meant to replicate shading. The reason pencil to paper needs to be learned first is because those skills transfer over to the digital world.
