It was Swish, Swish because of her mental breakdown and her petty fight with Taylor Swift, and y'all just slept on Smile. It could've been number 1 if it wasn't slept on.
@Alyssa Lol FYI Taylor Swift never flopped to this date. You must be living under a rock because Taylor Swift has been successful in multiple genres while Katy Perry slowly faded over time.
@@rachsmith3479 TBF, Taylor's still young, she still has a lot of years to be famous. Hollywood is really hard on female artists. Everyone knows Katy Perry and her songs will be played years and years from now. Just like every other huge pop star during that time. It was the golden era of pop music.
I think it was too political for some people. It was written in response to the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Lots of artists flop or take a dip when they get political in their music, which honestly makes perfect sense. If a fan disagrees they won't listen to the song and will make assumptions about new ones, plus music is meant to be escapism, people just don't wanna listen to music that reminds them how stressful the world is, even Eminem took a slight dip when he went political.
Sometimes music is meant to be escapism. Other times it’s about the songwriter’s thoughts/feelings on a particular subject. Sometimes people like political music. My parents (who are Boomers) told me that political songs were VERY popular in the 1960’s and 70’s. But maybe it’s just the difference between Boomers and Zoomers.
@@rebecca8525 exactly! Sometimes i want an escape but other times i want to listen to songs that relate to how im feeling or because i agree with whats said. I mean party/escape music is fun and thats why its popular but i prefer relating to the song
Sometimes it’s not even about artists getting political, but that their approach is tone deaf and awful. Take Madonna’s “American Life” for example. A song about how she embodies the american dream and is still not happy (fair enough) because she can’t get her latte. It was her last top charting single.
Piper Adams..depends on the band/Artist. Your speaking of mainstream commercial music. But there’s plenty of political bands that are well like and made a career from political music.
Sometimes when you make great album it is hard to have a follow up that will match it, as there will be expectations and sometimes people already got acclimated to the sound...
She’s doing fine. Two “flop” albums doesn’t destroy her career, neither does dying her hair blond (which is her natural hair color) and cutting it short (Pink is very successful). Vegas is a great Career move for her, she can just perform there for a couple years, spend time with Orlando and Daisy, and then come back better than ever.
for an artist that used to always be number 1 for weeks and that now struggles to reach top five in the billboard bubbling under she isn't doing fine. idk why people have to convince others she is... like she's not what's the problem? not everyone will stay on top forever. yeah she's happy doing her thing and she'll always have her name that makes her somehow famous but that doesn't mean doing fine. going from stadiums and arenas to selling 7k tickets for a residency is a big downgrade imo.
Millions of music makers would kill for Katys flop era success. Many artists dont chart well but remain successfull and like shes in the top success of 1% of artists even in smile era, its ridiculous how people see millions of views and streams as flops when theres artists who struggle to even get paid enough for their living

I would never say a song ruined someone's career. I believe that all artists, especially if they write they're ow. Stuff, hits a point when they just slowly stop appealing to their audience as they get older and newer artist come out. I have noticed that the younger your audience the more they tend to follow what's hot and trending. The song didn't kill her career. She just isn't appealing to the young audiences. But her career isn't over. She still has a large base of loyal fans.
@Alyssa Katy Perry came from a poor family so there was no nepotism there. She struggled for years with her small band until she blew up. She was worked to the bones.
@Alyssa it happens all the time, the industry has favorites and pushes them for a certain time until they get old, people like nicki minaj is an example when cardi became the industry favorite and pushed super hard and nicki stopped being played on radio and stuff
Hated that song, didn’t feel like her at all. It felt very producer composed to meet (then) current trends. I couldn’t even tell it was her until someone told me it was her.
the reason she flipped was the change of hair..she probably would’ve been so successful as before if she didn’t change the hair color..but she didn’t want to change just because people want her to..as she sings “ they told me that i’m crazy..But I never let them change me”

I really miss the Prism Katy era, that album was literally my childhood. A couple days ago, I heard a few notes of “Birthday” playing on the radio (as in, how the stations “tease” the songs, not the full thing) , and that song is currently my most watched RUclips video. Memories came flooding back
I think every artist has a “shelf life”. Their commercial appeal will eventually fade. I think that’s a more realistic reason why Katy Perry hasn’t had a major hit since “Chained to the Rhythm”.
To be fair, idk if it was just my primary school at the time but if we had a disco, we would always play those songs and Swish Swish still lands to be one of my fav’s from Katy Perry.
You nailed it when you said Primary School. Older ppl who were her big paying audience, who bought her tickets and albums were not into her later basic music. That teen and tween money is sweet. But if you are targeting tween and younger, you are also talking to their parents. She is asking the parents or guardians of her fans for $$$. But yeah there was a lot going on besides one crap song.
The fact the I searched the you have to say that you’re fine when you’re not really fine but you just can’t get into it because they would never understand meme and this showed up says everything.
Those were some of my favorite songs tho!!! Chained has an actual message! I loved it sooooo much. It’s the quality of listening people that’s the problem!!! Not her! Omg
So … because people decide to expand their tastes and may see her as an artist that they’re just not interested in anymore, it’s their fault? what kind of weird ass stan logic is that? That’s not how this works. Not every single artist will put out great albums. Even MJ had a few bad apples that didn’t do so hot. What you personally may find to have an “actual message”, others will see it as moral grandstanding or babbling that they don’t want to hear coming from a multi-million dollar popstar. What you may immensely enjoy, others will groan at. What one will find as a great album, another will believe it deserves an even lower spot on the chart. That’s just how it is - that’s how _reality_ works. Don’t blame the audience for not liking someone’s music merely because you enjoy it. We’re humans, not robots.
I really liked Chained to the Rhythm, the rest of the album not so much. Also her 2019 single Never Really Over was really good too, one of my favourite Katy Perry songs.
Ok but can we talk about how the real reason her music doesn't hit different anymore is bc she stopped working with Dr Luke. We all know her previous albums were produced by him, and witness was her first to not be produced by him. I'm not saying she should work with him again bc I know he's an awful person, but I'm just pointing out the obvious.
yeah but she's still working with max martin and his team who co wrote and co produced all of her hits. the problem is that people always want someone new. and when women reach certain age and become mothers they tend to lose popularity.
*"ruined her career" is a bit much, Never Really Over and Daisies did ok for her, her reputation is in a really good place and she consistently has well over 50M monthly listener's, Capitol (her record label) NEEDS to promote her and send KP6 to radio*
Her career is not ruined at all. Not all songs can hit number one all the time.
Except that she hasn't had a top 40 since 2017. Not a top 20, or a top 10. That's six years of being mediocre.

It was Swish, Swish because of her mental breakdown and her petty fight with Taylor Swift, and y'all just slept on Smile. It could've been number 1 if it wasn't slept on.
Smile is literally a song intro for a news channel here in Australia
@Alyssa Lol FYI Taylor Swift never flopped to this date. You must be living under a rock because Taylor Swift has been successful in multiple genres while Katy Perry slowly faded over time.
Completely agree.
@@rachsmith3479 TBF, Taylor's still young, she still has a lot of years to be famous. Hollywood is really hard on female artists. Once that young, slim look fade away (female artists specifically), people will shift on someone younger. Nowadays, I always see Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish. In addition to that, music taste changes through the years.
I thought swish swish was horrible.
Chained to the rythum is an awesome song/video. There must be more behind the scene than we know.
Right I love that song very much it’s bring me happiness while I’m in the roller coaster in Minecraft
Here image also went from “teenage dream” to “can someone come get their drunk aunt off the dance floor? She’s scaring the kids.”
She has already made her name in iconic pop star history, she has played at the Super Bowl, she doesn’t need another number one hit. Everyone knows Katy Perry and her songs will be played years and years from now. Just like every other huge pop star during that time. It was the golden era of pop music.
It was the image change. Her "Bette Paige" dark hair big eyes looked great. The blond hair turned ppl off

I think it was too political for some people. It was written in response to the 2016 U.S. presidential election. It probably alienated some of her fans who had different political views and others who, as you said, just wanted fun songs. But the fun, carefree time of the Obama administration was over, and her songs reflected the change.
