In his autobiography and not one of the lies, Hogan said after the bell, he deliberately ran over to the timekeeper, snatched the belt and handed it the Warrior himself, not to pass it on but so all the attention was on him. Warrior lifted the belt over his head but 20,000+ people yelled Hogan. The bastard.
Which is also BS. If you re-watch the end of the match the ref tries to hand UW both belts, but UW selectively takes the IC belt and the ref is left standing there; looking around as if he doesn't know what's up. While close up on UW the ref leans through the ropes and hands the WC belt to the judge outside the ring. Hogan then leaves the ring shaking his head and all sulky bitch. THEN, he takes the WC belt from the judge and gives it to UW. UW knew before the fact. Hogan knew. The ref didn't, and it was obvious. So even that story is BS. If Hogan is such a green seer, then what happened with his movie career he was leaving wwf for?
TrenchcoatWallflower this was proved false by bruce Pritchard who has stated the plan was for hogan to hand the belt to warrior as a symbol of passing the torch. If you watch the ending...the ref mistakenly gives the world belt automatically to warrior and warrior tells him to give it back to the time keeper so hogan can grab it and hand it over.
An opening segment from RAW in 2035 Crowd: BORRRRRR-ING. BORRRRRRRING Roman: This isn't boring, guys! This is real life! Crowd: BOOOOOOOOOOOO Mauro: A mixed reaction from this crowd for fan favorite Roman Reigns!
Im a Hogan fan, but the only reason Warrior's reign didnt measure up is that Hogan didnt go away. The big angle of the summer was his injury and revenge against Earthquake when it should have been Rick Rude and Bobby Heenan one-upping Warrior until he destroys them both in he cage at Summerslam. Combine that with every major heel in 1989 getting burried by Hogan, there left no major challengers until October when Macho Man got rebuilt..and by that point, Vince was seeing dollar signs with Iraqi Sgt Slaughter taking the belt into Wrestlemania instead of Warrior vs Savage Career vs Title or Warrior vs Hogan
And why should the biggest WWE star go away when so many people want to see him? Its like telling the biggest box office movie star in the world to stop making movies and go away to let other actors make movies. It doesnt work that way. And one last thing, according to Bobby Heenan it was Hogan and Vince that created the Ultimate Warrior. That speaks volumes coming from Bobby.
@@alexadrian415 it’s not about telling him to go away, but using him in a manner that doesn’t take the legs out from under his supposed successor. What about Botchamania? There's nothing I enjoy more than my content being squeezed into a single corner of the available space! Wait, no. I hate that. In fact, that's the exact reason that I don't watch Botchamania.
@ Fidielio That's cool, I'm just sorry that both of the WrestleManias that were both hosted in your hometown were both kind of shit. Aside from (ironically enough) the Hogan matches, the card for both shows were very lackluster. But if it's any consolation the US has had a lot of shitty Manias too.
@ TheSilentWolf They really should do a Mania in the UK one year. Not only is there a great market for pro wrestling there but the Wembley Stadium has a capacity of 90.000 people, it would be foolish not to do a WrestleMania or another big show there sometime in the near future. the only reason why I could think of why they wouldn't do a Mania in the UK is because the different time zones in the US and UK. But if they did a show at 5:00 PM in the UK it would about 12:00 PM (ET) here in the US. I'm sure American fans wouldn't mind watching WrestleMania early for a change and British fans could finally go see a Mania live without having to travel all the way to the US or Canada in order to do it. And of course the WWE would make a killing from doing a WrestleMania in one of the hottest wrestling markets in the world and of course the city of London would benefit from having a show on the level of a WrestleMania. it would be a win-win for every party involved.
@ TheSilentWolf Yeah, WWE should definitely do more shows out of Canada/US and more shows in Mexico and Eurasia. I know the US will always be the WWE's home, but when you are called WORLD Wrestling Entertainment you really should do more big shows across the world.
oh yeah, well, nashville hosted said no holds barred ppv, 3 starrcades, in your house, wwe titles changes, and ic title changes and dammit i finally made it to wrestlemania in orlando at 24 which was a shell of what mania was at 6 and 18 and i couldnt quite chant this is awesome, but the wrestlers on all shows are made up of essentially the same biological material. oh thats odd. its damn odd.
Next year gets worse, at least in a single match situation. Warrior vs Savage (w/ Sherri and later Elizabeth). On top of that, we've lost Gorilla and Heenan isn't exactly doing that great. Only the Ref makes it out okay.
Warrior was actually a great champion. He teamed up with the Legion of doom on several occasions , even kerry von Eric at some point warrior was an alternative to hogan. That is why vince bought him back after the summer slam 91 suspension because he knew he had some pull. Dont get me wrong warrior didn't help his cause by some of his own decisions but hogan was always the main draw but helwig could always hold his own
Knowing what I know now about Hogan, I can believe he kicked out of that "clean" finish like he did for selfish reasons, but as a kid watching that, not only did I mark the FUCK out when Warrior won, but I saw it as a result of these two equal forces, "“the unstoppable force meeting the immovable object". It was inevitable that the winner would only just manage to eke out a victory, and it made sense that it was Warrior being the new hyper energetic challenger and conquering hero. Hogan may have been being egotistic, but in terms of the mythos of the match up, it worked.
Hogan did not put over Warrior clean. I mean, he kicked out at 3 1/4, which was his way of making sure that Warrior would never be seen as someone he had truly passed the torch to. And I mean - it worked! Just a year later Hogan was the head figure once more and Warrior's decline started from there on. It just kills me to hear WWE proclaim what a big deal that victory was. Hogan made it look like a fluke with that Kick Out, even with that post match celebration.
...and Hogan kicked out of Warrior's finisher earlier in the finish. Warrior didn't kick out of Hogan's. He just 'missed' and was hit by the same move again, kicking out at 3 and 1/16.
This is, and forever will be, my favorite WrestleMania, likely because it was the first one I ever saw on PPV at a friend's house. I've never understood why it is considered lackluster. Every match felt like it had purpose as the culmination of a feud or at least told a decent enough story for the non-established feud matches. The legendary status of the main event was almost on par with Hogan/Andre from the best WrestleMania ever(WM3). And even though in retrospect, it is clear that Hogan didn't truly put Warrior over, 10 year old me still looks at that finish as the end of something amazing and transitioning into something potentially even more amazing. It's a shame that knowledge of the less than heroic side of the business tends to jade us rather than remember just how much fun these classic events truly were. :-( Additionally, I don't have the patience to sift through all the comments to see if it was already mentioned, but the mixed tag match has one other casualty not mentioned in the video, as Miss Elizabeth was in the corner of Dusty and Sapphire.
I will never forget watching this live. I didn't hate Hogan or anything but I was a total Warrior mark by the time Mania came around. What a main event!
People can say it's shocking that half the contestants are dead but 2 facts: 1. It was nearly 30 years ago 2. Most wrestlers aren't at peak popularity until at least their mid 30's anyway
Everyone likes to shit all over the Warrior in hindsight, but him winning the title here made 100% sense. He was over like gangbusters and it had gotten stale with Hogan on top. Truth be told, Hogan’s popularity was waning and he and Vince’s relationship was heading for the outhouse in the midst of the steroid scandal.
Warrior failed as champion because they didn't give him anyone to wrestle. If Hogan's ego didn't control things, it would have been Warrior fighting Earthquake, who was the top heel at the time.
Wrong, Savage, fresh off his year long feud with Hogan was still the top heel by a mile. Which is why he feuded with Warrior. The only difference is due to Hogan being a prick, their feud led to a career ending matcn instead of a title match. Jokes on Hogan though since nobody remember his garbage title match from Wm7 but EVERYONE remembers savage warrior stealing the show that night.
Right after WM 6, Savage was a decided midcarder, doing the "king" shtick and feuding with Dusty Rhodes. He lost to Rhodes at WM and only beat him at SummerSlam because the focus was on moving the heat from him to Ted DiBiase. Savage didn't get back into the main event scene until Survivor Series. Which means that from April to August, Just as much main event focus was on Hogan's injury by Earthquake as it was on Warrior's title match with Rick Rude. Earthquake was definitely a top heel, sending jobbers to the hospital on a weekly basis. Rude was played up as the only man to beat Warrior, but he never seemed a serious challenger.
pjabrony Savage busted Warriors head with his scepter causing him to lose the title leading to the first ever career match at WM7. Macho King was the top heel, Earthquake was a flash in the pan afterthought.
We're talking about different times. You're talking about nine months after the Warrior won his title. I'm talking about two months after. What was he doing then? Who was he working with to show off as champion?
The main event of this show was basically the highlight of my childhood. The Andre moment also was an emotional highlight. Looking at the card of the first several Manias... most of the undercard would never have a shot at being on a modern Mania. Not even the pre-show!
Ok... Zues said in an interview found on RUclips that Vince wanted Zues to be Champion at WM6 til WM7 because Hogan went off to film Suburban Commando. Zues said his agent advised Zues to decline, which he did. It would have looked convincing for Zues to beat Hogan 1 on 1, then regain the belt a yr later. Back then Vince had storylines written a yr earlier, confirmed by many wrestlers. André turned heel at WM3 to make his film, Hogan lost the belt b4 WM4 to film No Holds Barred, & the reason Hogan fued with Earthquake was to make it look like Hogan was legit injured but he was filming Suburban Commando. After WM4 Hogan "disappeared" then returned to help Macho for Summer Slam. André "couldn't get over his loss" then made his return after after WM3 at Survivor Series that yr. Zues should have went with a Championship run he was convincing & worked well with Macho Man at Summer Slam + Ted DiBiase at Survivor Series, the 3 of em all could have joined forces after WM6 then have their individual matches (which Macho & Ted did) with Warrior & Piper. Hogan Zues 2 at WM7 made sense, in my personal opinion.
You give Hogan credit for finally putting somebody over for the first time during his then 6 year. 4 month stint in the company? As Billie Kay would say, "You have got to be joking me!".
@@stevendrumm4957 I don't know if you were watching back then, but it would have made literally no sense for Hogan to lose clean to anyone in that period. He was like a superhero to fans - no one else before or since really compares apart from maybe Sammartino. It was a major surprise for Warrior to go over like that and Hogan could easily have avoided it if he wanted to, due to his value to the company.
Warrior gave a very different story about being the champion. He knew he would be dropping the belt back if Hogan decided to come back full time as Hogan was thinking about retiring at the time.
Warrior could have surpassed hulk if he played his cards right but between him and management and I’m sure hogan doing his best to hold him down he had no chance but he did set some sales records
vince senior drew better crowds with andre than he did 5 foot nothing pepper gomez. the tradition continued with vince jr and the bodybuilders but the steroids involved led to the attention of the federal government and that led to all of the modern midgets getting the spotlight, but the smaller guys always draw small crowds.
Let it also be noted that Warrior did NOT kick out of the Leg Drop, while Hogan kicked out of the Splash (the first time). Added together with Hogan's posturing and obvious milking of sympathy at the end and you can see that this is NOT Hogan putting Warrior over. What a dick.
someone commented on a previous video that; if they do all wrestlemanias until 32, all voiced by Adam, he'll buy a subscription to whatculture extra, this man has blessed the Blampied fanboys
I watched this Mania a few weeks ago, was tough watching Andre, he was in terrible shape at that point. Can't believe they were still trotting him out there at that point, even if it Haku was doing the majority of the work in the ring.
Andre kept working even after he left WWF. He also stunk up the ring in All Japan and in Mexico... in the latter case literally, when he shat all over Bad News Brown during a match. He was being used beyond his usefulness, sure, but he also kept going out there instead of just quitting.
Reminder that ultimate warrior was once asked by a deathly sick kids parent to visit him and warrior said yes, and showed up. Bret wrote about it in his book
Wow, all of those wrestling legends in one Wrestlemania, gone. Interesting, but mostly sad. R.I.P. indeed. On a happier note, using KO, Edge, Zayn, and Jericho in this was a nice touch.
Hogan is probably the worst. enough has been said about his awful moveset but more importantly was the fact that he was such a diva behind the scenes. He's the reason WCW failed
Unlike most kids I hated the Warrior and was pissed when Hogan lost the belt to him. I was so happy when Savage blasted his scepter on that lunatics head at the following rumble.
I don't give a shit what people say about Cena, no one in the history of the business was more protected than Hogan in his prime.
Yeah but at the time, kayfabe was very well protected, so the public just thought of Hogan as a great wrestler, rather than the Vince's current baby
Thomas Broome-Jones thats because Cena for the most part acts for the sake of the business, while Hogan only ever did anything for his own benefit.
Which is also BS. If you re-watch the end of the match the ref tries to hand UW both belts, but UW selectively takes the IC belt and the ref is left standing there; looking around as if he doesn't know what's up. #0: Demolition beating Andre/Haku got the biggest crowd pop of the night (also one of the biggest in history).
It is an actual crime that you don't use your Flair impression more often. I actually died at 1:12
One thing I've noticed from all these early Wrestlemanias...
VINCE MCMAHON LIKES BIG SWEATY MEN
wait until we get to 12
Marcelo Saunders Shawn and Bret were swollen at the time.
BaseGod jiggly pecs
BaseGod rather have big larger then life characters then all these small jobber looking wrestlers who only know how to spotfest.
vince senior drew better crowds with andre than he did 5 foot nothing pepper gomez. the tradition continued with vince jr and the bodybuilders but the steroids involved led to the attention of the federal government and that led to all of the modern midgets getting the spotlight, but the smaller guys always draw small crowds.
The power of the Warrior is still alive today
Where do you find all of these facts? Great job
Let it also be noted that Warrior did NOT kick out of the Leg Drop, while Hogan kicked out of the Splash (the first time).
Added together with Hogan's posturing and obvious milking of sympathy at the end and you can see that this is NOT Hogan putting Warrior over.
What a dick.
this series is better than I though it would be
Big Show gets the roughest ride considering the years he's put in, people he's put over and a million other things he's done for the company
I love this series!
that replace the solvent with water prank is hilarious
someone commented on a previous video that; if they do all wrestlemanias until 32, all voiced by Adam, he'll buy a subscription to whatculture extra, this man has blessed the Blampied fanboys
11. The last WWE PPV my family purchased. We threw big parties for Mania 2, 4, 5, and 6. Attended 3 in person!
Can't wait to see you go nuts on WrestleMania IX.
who else saw Lita on Edge at 1:01
5:31 I UNDERSTOOD THAT REFERENCE
Vince & Shane .vs. Michaels & God
I remeber in the Royal Rumble, when all of a sudden Hogan and the Warrior were in the ring alone. It was brilliant.
these are so good
Fact #11: WWE was known as WWF back in 1990
Jon Power 😱 whoa I didn't know that
I'm old. I still call it WWF.
Andre leaving the ring was a great curtain call for him, I’ll never forget it😊
11/15/22
He turned his back on Haku
3:30 That's not how you spell Genius
I watched this Mania a few weeks ago, was tough watching Andre, he was in terrible shape at that point. Can't believe they were still trotting him out there at that point, even if it Haku was doing the majority of the work in the ring.
Andre kept working even after he left WWF. He also stunk up the ring in All Japan and in Mexico... in the latter case literally, when he shat all over Bad News Brown during a match. He was being used beyond his usefulness, sure, but he also kept going out there instead of just quitting.
Andre and Haku vs Demolition, That's A LOT of strength in that ring
holyshit ric flair can teleport he is a legend.
3:06 "His first loss was to BRUTUS THE FUCKING BARBER BEEFCAKE!!!!"-Conrad Thompson Something to Wrestle With Bruce Prichard
He missed edge and lance storm was there.
Piper going through the airport half black , I bussed out laughing
Reminder that ultimate warrior was once asked by a deathly sick kids parent to visit him and warrior said yes, and showed up. Bret wrote about it in his book
Miss Elizabeth was involved in the Dusty/Sapphire vs. Macho/Sherri match as well so it goes one step further.
5:25 aged well since Roman’s still main eventing mania yet as a heel finally 😂
I never knew that about Piper not washing off the black paint cuz Andre hid the solvent. LMFAO!
The day Hulkamania died !!! Warriors theme music was so good to hear that day
Wow, all of those wrestling legends in one Wrestlemania, gone. Interesting, but mostly sad. R.I.P. indeed.
On a happier note, using KO, Edge, Zayn, and Jericho in this was a nice touch.
That Hogan Vs. Warrior match was good
I recall videos like this for Survivor Series and Royal Rumble, but I can’t find them. Does anyone know what happened?
Isn't that Kerry Von Erich(Texas Tornado) at 3:20?
Classic intro
DDP was the chauffeur driving Rhythm & Blues to the ring in the Pink Cadillac
That Piper rib is hilaaaaaaarious
Hogan is probably the worst. enough has been said about his awful moveset but more importantly was the fact that he was such a diva behind the scenes. He's the reason WCW failed
Carlos Gallego to be fair, he COULD work in Japan. He just had to limit his move set for character’s sake in the WWE
When I think of closed circuit I just think of things like security cameras and such. I'm not sure how closed circuit broadcasts operated.
Unlike most kids I hated the Warrior and was pissed when Hogan lost the belt to him. I was so happy when Savage blasted his scepter on that lunatics head at the following rumble.
These are fun, hopefully there isn't a Mania where nothing interesting happened.
Ax of Demolition's final Wrestlemania. Ax has a PERFECT 3-0 Wrestlemania record...
Shoutout to Lita at 1:02
1:06
That was so evil what you guys did there with sami zayn
