I have had a pair of LS909 for many years and recently acquired a pair of LS990 - which are the same except for cosmetic differences. I am listening to them stacked with the upper ones inverted (like stacked Advents) using a pair Kenwood L07M monoblocks and the matching L07C preamplifier to drive them Very powerful and impressive. Are they the best speakers ever - no, but they are great fun and very dynamic. i highly recommend them.
Hi Andrew, A colleague of my is last time busy with better speaker placement and with sound reflection with some plywood you can get some nice results.
OMG! how can a person even do that damage to the speaker cabinet??? did they drag them on the floor or what.. unbelievable.. I would never do such a thing.. beside good sound, the speakers must be also beautiful to look!
It could be good although I do not know if Sansui was good at 1989. It was quite expensive though at 1'800 DM. Heavy power supply and 80 watts 8 Ohm. Would pay between 75 and 200 euro.
The 212 had the lightest tone arm, the touch play switch, removable cartridge headshells to swap. The only thing it needed was a soft close lid. If you decide to use the old 212, replace the capacitors and RCA cables. Back in the 70s I switched to Mogami Neglex cables.
Those Kenwood's you got are like a 12 inch woofer and the Tweeter is called a bullet tweeter they sound good and i like the big midrange i like the square ones....ill bet they sound sound decent Kenwood made decent speakers back then..
I have 2 different model of sansui’s the Sp 1500 and Sp 2000 speakers,They sounds good and I’ll will never sell those speakers cos expensive here in U.S. I love Sansui brand
Nice speakers Drew👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 I know that speakers from kenwood,I’ve seen that kenwood speakers here before and it’s pricey and heavy but I’m looking for AR Speakers for a good and fair price
Monsters! Actually nearly finished my set and will be putting them away as there just too big for my living room. The build quality is fantastic but can't work out why Kenwood decided to staple the back of tone controls to cabinet which made it a pig to remove crossover as it's hard wired? Removing caps also was hard as Kenwood used super tough glue to hold them in place 😡I used lightweight dye thats used in medical industry to rewhite the cones as it's virtually weightless . Looks OEM original. Definitely don't paint as weight will change the cones frequency I also dyed them before the new foam surround was fitted. Can send before and after pics of the cones as mine were much worse than yours.
Andrew I have a 250 ml bottle and barely used any so let me know if you want 100 ml easy to apply and drys fast so no fear of runs. Looks OEM I'm delighted with how they turned out.
Whenever you do a VS test on the Kenwood's put them on a Amp that puts out about 200 watt a side and they will sound very good for you always go a bit more on the power amp what the speaker is rated for just dont drive the amp real hard to them then ur asking for a blow out you can try that Yamaha amp on them that should be good one to use..
Andrew, when you talk about best vintage speakers you already had, you always forget to mention the Philips 22rh497! they are one of the best sounding speakers.. (and that`s real vintage from early 70s), only two speakers from Philips series were better, the Philips 22RH427 (with double active woofers) and 22RH457 (also 2 woofers but one is passive) OMG that sound! so great balanced, rich & clean, full sound you have probably seen them - big large boxes, but not so deep, with non removable cloth covers... they had big cross shaped logo-mark: Hi-Fi International... everyone who has or had them knows what I`m talking about! very very good speakers, 100% vintage... (made in Holland)!
@@vintagestereo yes, they are worth every euro, especialy 22rh427, but they are becoming rare, so clean and beautiful vocals, nice warm bass, even the smaller ones sound so good.. I have the 1971 Philips 22rh412 small speakers with cheap lightweighted cabbinets, with only one 17cm full range driver AD7061, but that driver sounds so good, that even audiophiles search for it... but they don't go below 50hz, so you need sub.
Never seen those Kenwoods, but there are some vintage JLBs that have a similar bullet style tweeter. Don't remember the model, maybe the C-38/C-37. These had a five or six pound metal bullet tweeter in them, that by all accounts, was very good? I've never heard them. But they are vintage. Good luck with your quest.
Hi mate love your enthusiasm. These 990s are excellent speakers but I'll have to disagree with your assessment they are the best Kenwood. The LS770 are the top of the stack!!! All japan by Trio. 10" cast aluminium basket woofer. All cast alloy bullet horn tweeter. 10" cast magnesium alloy passive radiator. The woofer and radiator are impregnated paper suspended in never to fail impregnated fabric. These are closed cabinets and have a tweeter gain pot on the front. The crossover is very rudimentary as the radiator functions in such a way it handles much of the frequency response. If you ever spot these in the wild I would suggest you snap them up and you can do a side by side comparison. You WILL be amazed! Happy hunting mate!!

Thank for the tip because i was breaking my head how to get those white again. I was thinking of painting them but a layer paint have extra weight and can damage the speakers
@@vintagestereoTry it on the reserve woofer first, but that is logical. I would leave it alone I think it's a paper cone, would not put to much moisture on it.
That is exactly what kinda woofers that are in my fishers only mine are 16 inch has that white cones they pound...and it does not matter what they look like looks can be fixed...it's how they sound is what counts they look like descent sounding speakers I have a set of Kenwood's there 15 inch has that real tight sound don't know anything about them there never heard a pair..
These kenwood ls-990 are never for sale in the Netherlands. Probably they weren’t sold here but I can be wrong. According to hifiwiki they where 2400 german mark a pair new and the jbl l100 where 2600 german mark a pair new. So cheaper but JBL had the bigger name in speakers. I see them sometimes in Germany for sale for prices between 300 and 1000 euro.
Wow ur car has a half din radio that's a big radio and yes I think that has a CD changer that middle speaker could be a woofer or a center channel for surround sound..I used to work at a custom car audio shop so I know Radio's an Andrew is that car 6 speed stick shift I've never seen a Toyota in that model in a standard wow I'd have a ball driving that thing😅..I can drive stick or auto I've even drove a 18 wheeler without the bed just the rig boy was that a job driving that thing..
