  • Today's video is a little rant but an insightful one at that hahah. Some things are so outdated that we do, I can't be the only one it drives crazy. How do you deal with small businesses? It's AMAZING to support them always and support African brands, but are we giving them the feedback to be great?

Its so true, when I travel to Uganda I am always prepared for bad customer service and scammers because when they look at you, they see money so they go all in on robber you up front so I find it hard to support a business that is mainly focusing on profit and not returning customers or buildings relationships with loyal customers. As a country we have a long way to go for sure

We do have a long way to go. I will say, it has improved. The pandemic was a huge slap in the face to many businesses to get it together, so I was so happy to see that. But ehhhh, we have a ways to go

You’ve nailed it. I’m going on one year in Uganda and I am loving life here. You definitely motivated my move to this great country and I am thankful to you ❤
The issue of ‘dm for price’ is one of my greatest peeves in Africa. Almost every African country I’ve been to, sellers use this technique to cheat customers. I always tell the sellers, unless you are selling a rare luxury item, list the damn price please 😅 it’s so annoying having to DM so they can cheat you.

It is sooo annoying! Anytime someone asks, I don't even bother. I find another transparent business that makes sense. It's actually wild the disservice they're doing to their business by making customers work like that LOL. There's too much opportunity and many businesses in the marketing to be making customers hunt for information. And don't get me started when I realized some want to just cheat and base prices depending on how you sound or what you look like. Insaneee

    Deep video. I like it.
As a Diasporan still living i the diaspora, it's a little bit different on this end, as the 'buy Black' concept is more about maintaining our economic strength within our communities. My personal issue/gripe is that our people tend to be VERY short sighted, and hold the Black business owner to a MUCH HIGHER standard for customer service, and will quit supporting their business for the slightest (and stupidest) reason...whereas they'll accept the bad behavior and treatment from an 'alien' owned business, and continue to economically support them.
It's a lot to think about, but you made a lot of great points in this video. There needs to be a happy medium, where a business can grow & continue to service their customer base, despite whatever missteps they may go through...

This is suuuuch a great perspective! You're right, the buy black movement has shifted int hat direction where we take crap service from big businesses and we say "well that's just how it is" in North America, however small businesses in North America aren't extended such grace. I will say, after working in SO many industries in Canada, having owned a business and supported many local businesses, the bare minimum of good customer service is expected across the board. It actually doesn't take much for a small business to have standard customer service, slightly go above and beyond and retain customers.
In Africa (specifically Uganda since i spend the most time here), big or small, the customer service is just TRASH. There's a handful of businesses with impeccable customer service and everyone will say "well that's just them", as an excuse. I find it so weird. SO SO weird. Like wouldn't you want to do great by your customers so you get more customers? Especially in a society that lives off of word of mouth? LOL. It's so fascinating.

      @@RachaelNalumuWooooow!!! 😮😮😮
That is NOT good, lol, lol. They deeeefinitely need to step up their customer service game. Especially if you're promoting yourself via word-of-mouth as your primary means of promotion, you DO NOT want your customer service to be trash. That same word of mouth could kill your business, if you have trash service. What's that old saying about first impressions...? 😉

They've got to rise that bar. Its not acceptable to take people for granted. You need to put your self in the consumers' shoes.( if am being realistic and i need to continue spending money on a product that meets my standards. I got to pretend that am an expert. This way i will be able to let you know what is missing and why am supporting yo business). As I continue giving you these feedback, this means that am contributing to the growth of your business. As a producer, one has got to continue doing more and more resuch about the consumers' taste..

You have GOT to put yourself in the consumers shoes 👏🏾👏🏾 always !! Continuously raising the bar for sure. It’s part of establishing a successful business I swear

I appreciate the content shared and would like to express my perspective on the matter. In my view, there is merit in adopting a self-interested approach to support our local businesses, as this contributes to the growth of our community. As business owners, embracing constructive feedback becomes paramount for improvement. As customers, it is incumbent upon us to go beyond mere patronage and extend support by sharing insights that can enhance the business.
Acknowledging that this process may pose challenges, it is crucial to recognize that incremental, consistent efforts can foster the growth of our businesses. See like this video being made already shows something positive. Drawing inspiration from the practices observed in the local Indian community here in Uganda, we can glean valuable lessons on sustainable business support. By choosing to support local enterprises, even in the face of difficulties, we pave the way for collective growth and prosperity.

Hey Boris ! Thanks for the amazing comment. I loved how you touched on the Indian community. I would love to do a deep dive video about that. They buy and support each other from the inception of a business. They also hold high standard of quality when they partner with one another too and both parties win at the end. I would love to see more of that in our communities.
